HILL & DALES SERIES RACE 5 - LUKES MOUNTAIN

On a calm and mild evening, five Newry AC athletes joined 221 runners to compete in the 5th Hill & Dales series race.

This was a new route for the series and a tough challenge as conditions further up became difficult.

The race set off from the green behind Meelmore Lodge, up the steep straight stoney lane before hitting the open mountain and taking a hard climb up Slievenaglough. They then followed the green shoot up to the first check point at its summit. After that it was the technical descent down and up to the summit of lesser-known Lukes’ Mountain and from there making their way back to Meelmore Lodge. Low cloud did cause and slow down some runners but not the Newry AC crew.

Esther Dickson was comfortable in the woman’s race, ahead of Karen Wilton and Sarah Graham. She finished as first female and an impressive 12th overall.

Rory Mulvaney closely followed Esther in with 15th placing and a time of 43:03.

Warren Cartmill finished as 2nd MV45 in 44:27; Sarah Quinn completed in 49:08 and David Hughes finished in a time of 1:02.

On Saturday, Aaron Montgomery took on the tough challenge of the West Highland Way in Scotland.

The objective is to complete the 95 mile West Highland Way Route in under 35 hours, from Milingavie to Fort William. There are 7 'check points' (roughly 12miles apart), where cut off times are realistically set to allow the competitor to reach that location at the average speed required to cover the 95 miles, in 35 hours.

Well done to Aaron for taking on this challenge of which he had to contend with horrendous torrential rain and cold temperatures as the race progressed.

LEINSTER MASTERS COMBINED CHAMPIONSHIPS, GREYSTONES, WICKLOW

Joanne McCauley participated as a guest in the Leinster Combined Championships on Saturday in Greystones, Wicklow. The combined championship is a Pentathlon event which incorporates five events of 80 metre hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot putt and 800 metres.

Joanne had great performances in her high jump and 800m and a strong long jump were she notched a PB. She finished the competition with a third placing which was a worthwhile journey and great start to her outdoor track season.

Ethan finished in 4th place in 20:27; Myles completes in 25th place with 26:57; Fiona was 37th in 32:05 and Erin was 38th in 32:22.
