Newry 1’s 1-3 Bangor 1’s

Newry hosted league leaders Bangor on Saturday in a must win game before the league split. Bangor started well seeing plenty of the ball, however it was Newry who had the first of the chances with a shot from Greer being saved 15 minutes in.  Bangor made Newry pay and scored from a penalty corner with a high drag flick.  Newry fought back into the game and had a number of short corners but were unable make them count with the Bangor keeper saving from Mathew Russell and David Andrews. Bangor made it two before the break with a simple tap in at the back post.

In the second half Newry again pushed forward and had a number of opportunities to score but came up against a resolute Bangor defence. However they did pull one back after a scramble in the middle of the circle saw Mathew Russell force the ball over the line.  Newry continued to try and get back on level terms but with 6 minutes remaining Bangor scored their third to put the game out of reach.  Newry Host Raphoe next Saturday in the quarter final of the cup.

Newry 7-0 Newcastle

On Wednesday 7th February Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies played their closes league rivals, Newcastle. Newry won the toss, selecting pass back and battled hard from the outset.  Newcastle were no mean feat and fought back at every opportunity. Fifteen minutes into the game Newry Captain Kathryn Baird played the ball up the line to right wing Stephanie Smart who crossed the ball into the circle allowing centre forward Laverne Inns to slip the ball passed the keeper putting Newry into the lead.  Five minutes later Rachel Lockhart, centre mid drove up the middle of the pitch, smashed the ball into the circle enabling Inns to score again. Newry coach, Jeremy Greer, began to use their 15 strong squad to roll on and roll off in order to keep up the fast pace of the game and just before the half–time whistle Newry were awarded their first corner at which centre forward Suzy Rollins hit the ball to Captain Baird who deflected the ball into the Newcastle goal securing a third goal for Newry. At half-time the score was three nil to Newry.

From the start of the second half Newcastle were on the attack and within five minutes were awarded a corner but failed to score. However Newry retaliated and within the first twenty minutes Newcastle sustained lot of pressure to their defence allowing right wing Smart to score the fourth.  Shannen Robinson, left wing then drove the ball into the Newcastle defence scoring two in a row with Baird sealing the deal with the seventh goal just before the final whistle. Newry retain their lead at the top of the Junior 8 A league. Players of the match were Kathryn Baird and Rachel Lockhart.

Newry 7 -v- Civil Service 0

Newry Olympic ladies repeated their 7 nil performance twice in one week, firstly against Newcastle and then against Civil Service on Saturday 10th Newcastle.  Suzy Rollins, left mid,  scored twice in the first ten minutes from the edge of the circle putting Newry in the lead. Newry kept possession with Katie McCullough right mid scoring the third at the twenty minite point with  Laverne Inns centre forward scoring the fourth five minutes later. Then Newry used their strong bench of players and made changes keeping the game flowing    CS battled back but conceded a corner right before the half time whistle. Captain Kathryn Baird injected the ball to centre forward Taja McElroy who scored the fifth for Newry.

CS decided to switch to a kicking back during the second half which strengthened  their outfield players. Both teams marked tight and for the first 20 minutes both teams battled hard until Inns was tackled at the same time by two backs in front of the CS open goal and was awarded a flick. Suzy Rollins flicked the ball into the bottom left scoring a hattrick and putting Newry into a 6 nil lead. During the final five minutes Shannen Robinson smashed the ball into the CS net giving Newry the final 7 nil score. Player of the match Suzy Rollins.
