Newry 1's 9-0 Cliftonville 1's
Newry hosted bottom of the league Cliftonville on Saturday with five games left in their league campaign. The league leaders found it hard to break down the Cliftonville defence early on as they bossed possession but were wasteful in front of goal. It took a bit of luck to put Newry ahead when Robert Irwin managed to bundled a short corner over the line after coming off the post man's thigh. Richard Nummy got his first of the day with 10 minutes left in the first half and quickly added his second not long after to give Newry a commanding 3-0 half time lead.
Newry played a lot better in the second half as the weather worsened. Keith McWilliams got in on the act with a simple tap in at the back post only a matter of minutes into the second period. The fifth came when David England fired home a great low drag flick before a great team goal which saw a number of fast and neat one two's starting in the right back position and ended with McWilliams slotting home his second. Richard Nummy then stepped up a gear late in the match firing home 3 more goals to bring his tally for the game to five and end the rout.
Newry next travel to QUB on Tuesday night followed by Campbellians next Saturday in two must win games in their pursuit for promotion.
