Newry 1’s 2-0 QUB
Newry hosted Queens on Saturday in what everybody knew was going to be a tough game and a potential banana skin on their pursuit of promotion.
Newry started well and had plenty of possession however their touch in front of goal was missing on a number of occasions. The Queens keeper was having a brilliant game and was playing like a sweeper at times cutting out a number of dangerous Newry crosses. However he was beat midway through the first half when David England fired home a short corner to ease some Newry nerves.
In the second half Newry continued to press forward looking for the all-important second goal which veteran Richard Nummy supplied from a short corner with a low flick into the corner. Newry still pressed forward but were pinned back from time to time by a pacey Queens attack. However Newry kept a clean sheet and now have five games remaining to try and gain promotion.

Newry Ladies 3-0 Donaghadee Ladies
On Saturday 18th January 2014, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Donaghadee 1st XI Ladies at home in the Senior 4 league. Donaghadee won the toss and chose the pass back sending the ball straight back into the Donaghadee defence and started to play up their right hand side. Newry mids pressed the Donaghadee players breaking down their play and tackled hard winning the ball back. Switching the ball back to defence Newry’s sweeper drove the ball back up through to the forwards who won a corner within the first ten minutes of play. Donaghadee’s keeper blocked every attempt to score by Newry and took their hit outs with speed keeping the ball in continuous play. It wasn’t until the 27 minute point when Newry drove the ball hard from the right defence through to the midfield and on crossing the ball to left wing Kathryn Baird, she picked the ball in the circle and on her reverse hit the ball straight into the Donaghadee goal putting Newry finally into a one nil lead just before half time. Donaghadee hit back hard and on a break drove the ball back up the pitch forcing the Newry keeper to save just at the half-time point.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong in continuous rain and dropping temperatures and after fifteen minutes of play Newry were awarded three consecutive short corners with centre forward Laverne Inns scoring a second goal on the third occasion Newry kept the pressure on and were awarded another corner at the 30 minute point from which right wing Laura Girvan scored putting Newry securely into a 3 nil lead.
