Newry hosted Civil Service on Saturday in their first of two consecutive home games in which they would be hoping to pick up a maximum of 6 points. The home side dominated the first half as Service played half court just hoping to keep the Belfast road men out and hit on the counter attack. The chances were few and far between in the early as service set deep cutting down all space for the Newry forwards. As the half wore on Newry began to move the ball quicker moving the service defence around to create more space. This finally paid off when Greer bust forward with the ball from right back beating 3 players before firing in a low cross which Andrews deflected into Colin McKnights path who slotted home past the keeper.
Newry continued to create chances after the opening goal with the best chance falling to Robert Irwin who was unable to beat the advancing keeper after great work on the left hand side of the pitch left him one on one but the keeper pulled of a great save low to his left.
The second half started as the first finished with Newry creating a lot of chances but were wasteful in front of goal, McWilliams, Fletcher and McKnight all had chances to extend the lead but were denied time and again by the Civil Service keeper who was playing out of his skin.
Service began to push forward in search of the equaliser looking to take advantage of Newry’s wastefulness in front of goal. The Belfast Road men seemed to lose control of the game and were unable to hold on to the ball for any period of time which caused a nervy end to the game which should have been out to bed a lot earlier. However Newry seen out the game to come away with all three points.
