Newry Wheelers at 2015 Irish National Championships
The Irish National Cycling Championships took place this weekend in Omagh hosted by Omagh Wheelers. Newry Wheelers had riders competing on Saturday in the M50 with Pete McConville and M40 Des Woods & Kevy Lynch. Among a strong line up the Newry men all finished strong in the bunch.

In the women’s race Newry The cream of Irish Women Cyclists lined up in the afternoon to contest the UCI ranked National Championships. The large field of almost sixty riders included top professionals such as Olivia Dillon (VisitDallas) and Fiona Meade (Fearless Femmes) as well as the best of the local talent. Newry wheelers duo veteran Alywnne Shannon & junior Catherine Sands were among a very strong line up of cycling talent including a strong field of pro cyclists. Newry Wheelers Catherine Sands making her debut at the nationals finished in an impressive 20th place with her club mate not are behind, almost a week from taking 1st place at the Gran Fondo. 56 women signed with 45 finishing the 62 mile race.
Sunday’s race saw the elite mens race, again a strong line up of Irelands to riders and from further afield in this race. Newry Wheelers line up of Gareth McCullough, Drew McKinley, Rory Farrell, Declan Reid and local lad Cormac Clarke riding for ILLI Cycling Team in Belgium. Strong performances all round but the man of day for Newry Wheelers was Gareth McCullough finishing in 4hrs 12mins a fine result on the 104 mile course.
