Write a commentMarc Potts from Omagh riding for the English based Neon Velo team was the victor in the Newry Wheelers promoted Tour of the Mournes earlier this month.
The race was run at high speed with Potts averaging 27mph over the course.
The Tour of the Mournes at 78 miles and with over 1300 metres of elevation is regarded as one of the biggest classics in irish cycling attracted one of its best fields seen in a long time.
Potts rode aggressively all day and attacked his breakaway companions at the climb of Elm Hall on the road to Santa’s cottage along with top junior Brendan Flanagan of the top team Powerhouse sport. The chase pack of Watson,Ward (Powerhouse Sport) Moore Caldwell cycles, Watson (Bikehouse), Donaldson and last years winner Fyffe and Halvey from Nicholas Roche performance team.
The break chased to the end but Potts was on a super day and wasn’t going to be caught and he took the bunch sprint in convincible fashion but Flanagan’s performance was also very impressive. The last podium spot was taken by Lindsay Watson of powerhouse sport.
Of the Wheelers in action Mark Mc Kinley, Des Woods, Sean Featherstone and Jude Sands all tried to chase but it was not to be a home win on this day but the positives are the lads all look in good shape.
Another star performance of the day came from the Newry wheelers marshals who covered many roads in the area to keep the high speeding pack safe around the towns and roads of the mournes.
