
Newry and Mourne District Council have announced that the St Colmans Sports Complex 3G Pitch has been selected as one of the venues for PlayBall Street Striker 2014.
PlayBall Street Striker 2014 is a cross community project targeting budding footballers from the age of 14 – 17, aiming to encourage the city’s youth to showcase their skills with unique street soccer type challenges.
It was a huge success in 2012 and 2013 and this year is expanding its reach to cover all of Northern Ireland including North, South, East and West Belfast including;
Derry/ Londonderry, Carrickfergus, Larne, Cookstown and Newry.
The qualifying heats will be held on Friday nights from 7th February until 28th March 2014, finishing off with the grand final Street Striker event.
Calling all budding soccer enthusiasts?
St Colmans Sports Complex are proud to host the Newry qualifying round on Friday 14th March from 6.00 – 9.00p.m. We are calling 40 individuals, male & female, from both sides of the community to participate in the soccer challenges at the qualifier.
The Newry qualifier will kick off with a good relations workshop, facilitated by local Irish League players Stephen Garrett, Cliftonville and Michael Gault, Linfield who play for clubs across the religious divide.
The qualifying heat consists of a series of skills, cross bar challenges, target shooting, free styling and the participants will also have the opportunity to play 5-a-side matches. The top five players on the night will be invited to the PlayBall Street Striker final event which brings together all the group’s at PlayBall, Stormont on Saturday 29th March 2014.
Judges
Local man Darren Mullen, Manager of Newry City FC will be one of the judges at the Newry qualifier, alongside Michael Gault, Linfield FC and Stephen Garrett, Cliftonville FC.
The Prize
Swansea City FC will be offering the eventual winner of PlayBall Street Striker a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel across and take part in a week’s trial for the club, with all travel and accommodation expenses being met by the project.
