The Canal Court Hotel in Newry have extended their association with Newry City AFC as main club sponsor for the next three seasons.
The commitment is welcome news for the club as it embarks on its first season in Championship football.
Commenting on the news Newry City AFC Manager Darren Mullen said “To have the Canal Court extend their deal with us is a great boost for the club. They came on board when we were playing Mid-Ulster football and have remained a loyal sponsor on our return to the Irish League. It is a partnership that works well and I certainly hope that continues in the years to come.'”
Mary Dillon from the Canal Court Hotel added “The Canal Court Hotel are very proud to hold the title of Main Sponsor for Newry City AFC. It is a great relationship to have between a large local business and one of the biggest sports clubs in the local area. As a business built up of local employees we are delighted to help the club develop. It is particularly satisfying to have been associated with Newry City AFC from the beginning and watch as local management and players have brought the club back to senior football which can only be good for the development of sport in our local area. We would like to wish the club the best of luck for the season ahead.”
Senior Men
Our senior men recorded a hard fought one point home win over Keady on Friday evening, 1 – 8 to 1 – 7.
Following a cagey opening to the game Mark McCabe put the Shanes ahead with a well taken point with Keady replying minutes later with a pointed free. Two David McCabe points, both from frees, edged the Shanes ahead before a Paul O’Rourke point, again from a placed ball, gave the Shane’s a three-point advantage midway through the first-half. A Mark McCabe score stretched their lead to four before a Ryan Quinn ball found McCabe in space in front of goal and he made no mistake from close range and the Shane’s now led by seven. Keady responded with their second point of the half but it was quickly cancelled out when David McCabe fired over from long range. A late first-half free saw Keady register their third point and go into the break six in arrears, 1 – 6 to 0 – 3.
The Shane’s made a great start to the second period with substitute Eamon McCabe slotting over following a powerful run from the halfway line. The home side were now seven to the good and in total control but some sloppy play in the middle of the field saw Keady drive forward and following a foul in the small square they were awarded a penalty. The resulting kick was sent low to Conor McKeown’s right and Keady were now only four behind. This score lifted the away side and they scored the next four points, two from frees, to level the game. The Shane’s had a number of good scoring opportunities to make the game safe but failed to make the most of them and it took a late point from the boot of David McCabe to edge the home side in front again, a lead which they held until the final whistle and claim a narrow win, 1 – 8 to 1 – 7.
Early Sunday afternoon and the senior men were back in action away to Eire Óg and after another tough contest the game ended all square at 2 – 9 apiece.
The sides swapped points in the opening exchanges with Matthew Girvan on target for the Shane’s before Eire Óg got the next two scores with David McCabe replying for the Shane’s with a well taken point. The home side moved four in front when they registered their first goal of the game but four points on the trot saw the Shanes draw level with the McCabe brothers, David and Mark, getting two points each. A pointed free put Eire Óg back in front again but from the resulting kick-out the Shane’s flowed forward and the move ended with Matthew Girvan slotting the ball low to the Eire Óg net to put his side in front for the first time. With the game in first-half injury time David McCabe found the Eire Óg net again, getting on the end of a fisted pass from Mark McCabe. The Shane’s led by five at this stage but Eire Óg narrowed the gap to four with a late pointed first-half free.
It was a disastrous start to the second-half for the Shane’s when in the opening minute a high ball into the square was fumbled to the net and Eire Óg were back to within one. A Paul O’Rourke point edged the Shanes further ahead but Eire Óg hit a purple patch to score the next four points of the game and go into the lead with less than five minutes left on the clock. The Shane’s poured forward in an effort to get back into the game and Mark McCabe’s third point of the contest had them back to within one and with the game entering additional time Matthew Girvan popped the ball over to level things up. Both sides had late chances to claim the spoils but ultimately the game all square, 2 – 9 to 2 – 9.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies made the short trip to Carrickcruppen on Saturday evening and put in a mighty effort to claim a two-point win, 6 – 12 to 4 – 16.
The Shane’s ladies were slow out of the blocks in the opening ten minutes and found themselves 2- 3 to 0 – 0 in arrears. However, they settled into the game and scored six of the next seven scores to level the game and the sides went in all-square at half-time at 2 – 6 apiece but in truth the Shane’s should have been ahead on the scoreboard as a perfectly good Aimee Mackin point was signalled wide.
Two early second-half goals, one each from Sorcha McDonnell and Aimee Mackin, and a fine point from Aoibheann Jones to a single pointed free from Carrickcruppen gave the Shane’s a six-point lead. By the midway point of the half the Shanes led by seven points before four points on the trot gave them a seemingly unassailable eleven-point advantage but Cruppen fought back to get within two. The Shane’s girls defended like their lives depended on it in the final few minutes and their sheer hard-work and determination saw them over the line, 6 – 12 to 4 – 16.
Training for the senior and minor ladies continues this Tuesday evening at 7.00pm before the senior ladies’ travel to Armagh Harps next Monday night at 7.30pm.
Minor Boys
The minor boys were scheduled to play Grange on Monday night but the game has been postponed until Monday 7th August.
U16 Girls
Our U16 girls recorded a great win over Killeavy on Thursday evening in the league and they were back in championship action on Saturday afternoon away to Armagh Harps. Despite putting in a decent performance, the Shane’s lost out to the home side. The girls have an away game against Clann Eireann on Thursday evening and all girls are asked to meet at the club at 5.30pm.
U14 Girls
It was disappointment for our U14 girls last Monday, losing out by two points to Armagh Harps in the championship. The Shane’s girls trailed by double figures going into the last ten minutes of the game but they mounted a tremendous comeback but unfortunately time ran out and they fell to a narrow defeat.
U12s
Saturday saw our U12 amalgamation of Patrick Rankins travel to Ballyholland to take part in their annual blitz and after a brilliant day’s football they won the Cup competition. The young footballers played some brilliant football right through the tournament and they saved one of their performances for the final itself where defeated their Warrenpoint opponents by a few scores. On top of winning the cup Caolan O’Hare was deservedly named as the Player of the Tournament. The club would like to thank Ballyholland for their invite and their hospitality on the day.
U12 Girls
Well done to our U12 girls who were at home to a very good Tír na nÓg side on Sunday morning. It was a great display of football from both sets of players and the Shane’s girls battled really hard from start to finish to go on and seal the win. Training continues on Tuesday evening from 7.00pm – 8.00pm with a game away to the amalgamated side of Silverbridge and Cullyhanna on Thursday evening with a throw-in time of 7.00pm.

Senior Men
Our senior men returned to winning ways last Wednesday with a nine-point victory over Derrynoose, 4 – 10 to 0 – 13.
An early pointed free from Derrynoose was quickly cancelled out by a Mark McCabe point before two points in as many minutes from Connaire Mackin and Ryan McCabe put the home side in front. Derrynoose replied with their second point of the game before a powerful shot from Ryan McCabe was brilliantly saved by the Derrynoose keeper but the ball rebounded to Mark McCabe who slotted over from close range. Two points in quick succession from Derrynoose, one from a free, had them back on level terms before a high ball from Ryan Quinn was fielded by David McCabe who then turned his marker before dispatching his shot low to the back of the Derrynoose net. The Shane’s led by three at this stage but Derrynoose responded in great fashion, getting the next three points to tie proceedings once more. Great defensive work from Paddy Doran resulted in a swift Shane’s attack with the eventually making its way to Paddy Maughan and the big full-forward made no mistake from close range, coolly shooting the ball to the net for his team’s second goal. Maughan had his eye in now and in the Shane’s next attack he rose highest in the small square to fist the ball home and raise the green flag for the second time in as many minutes. The Shane’s were playing some great football and led by six at this stage and this increased to seven soon after when Connaire Mackin, playing his last game before heading to America for the summer, launched a fantastic ball from right out on the side-line which sailed straight between the posts to leave his side 3 – 5 to 0 – 7 to the good at the break.
The Shane’s all but sealed their win in the opening minute of the second period when they won the ball at the throw-in and delivered it to Mark McCabe who in turn found is brother and he flicked the ball to the net for his second and his side’s fourth goal of the contest. The sides then swapped a point apiece with Sean McLoughlin on target for the home team before a Derrynoose free reduced the deficit to nine but a point from Paul O’Rourke and a free from David McCabe kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s and well in control. The Shane’s then took their foot off the pedal slightly and in that period Derrynoose fired over three unanswered points before David McCabe, who was having a great game, took his personal tally for the night to 2 – 2 with a well taken point. The sides swapped points in the closing stages with Paul O’Rourke getting the Shane’s score to leave the final-score 4 – 10 to 0 – 13 in favour of the Camlough men.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies travelled to Grange on Saturday evening to take on the home side in the Championship and it proved to be a tough assignment with the Shane’s eventually running out winners by seven points, 6 – 12 to 3 – 14.
The Shanes’ struggled to find their rhythm in the opening period and found it difficult to get scores on the board. With half-time fast approaching they trailed their opponents by a point but a late Aimee Mackin saw them go at the break two pints to the good 1 – 6 to 1- 4.
The second-half was real end to end football with both sides virtually going score for score but it was the Shane’s girls who made the most of the goal chances with Aoibheann Jones, Sorcha McDonnell and Aimee Mackin all raising the green flag to keep the Shane’s out in front. To their credit it was a very good Grange side that kept themselves right in the game until the final whistle with some great scores but it was the Shane’s who emerged victorious in the end with seven points to spare, 6 – 12 to 3 – 14.
The senior ladies will continue to train on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in preparation for their next league game away to Carrickcruppen next Saturday evening at 7.00pm.
Minor Boys
A severely depleted minor boy’s team travelled to Cullyhanna last Monday for their latest league game following the exam break and despite putting in a decent performance they lost out by five points. The lads were scheduled to be in action on Monday night at home to Maghery but the game has been cancelled.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls have a home game against Killeavy this coming Thursday evening at 7.00pm.

U10s
Wednesday saw our U10 footballers travel to Saval with two teams to take part in a couple of challenge games. All the boys and girls got a full game of football and produced some great football with some great skill and effort on show.
Two teams also travelled to Clonduff on Saturday to participate in the annual Daniel Andre memorial tournament. One of the teams found themselves in a tough group alongside Clann na Banna, Glen Emmets, Ballyholland and Bredagh but some great performances saw the Shane’s progress to the quarter-final of the shield. They faced a very good Burren side in this game and it proved to be a very tight affair which eventually saw the young Shane’s fall to a single point defeat.
The second team were also in a tough group and after games against Saval, Burren, Clann Eireann and Clonduff they found themselves in the quarter-final of the competition. Mayobridge were waiting in the quarter-final and this was another tight and tough game but the young Shane’s dug deep and claimed a narrow one point win. Clann Eireann were the opponents in the semi-final and unfortunately, they proved too strong for the Shane’s youngsters and claimed the win.
The U10’s management team were delighted with the effort the Shane’s put in at the tournament and they are extremely happy with the progress being made by all the players. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday evening at the field from 6.00pm – 7.00pm with a game squeezed in between on Wednesday evening away to Lisbrack with a throw-in time of 7.00pm. More games will hopefully be confirmed later in the week.

With the Championship beckoning next season for Newry City AFC a familiar face has been signed up to the team.
Darren King joins Darren Mullens squad as they prepare for life in The Championship next season.
Undoubtedly a class act Engine also brings years of recent experience at a higher level of football to The Showgrounds and will be a massive addition to the club, a fact which was not lost on manager Darren Mullan “Although we have a big squad and there is competition for places throughout, it’s very hard to pass up the opportunity of signing someone of Engine’s calibre.
"As a former captain he returns to the club with a wealth of experience and is a welcome addition to what we hope will be a competitive squad in next season’s Championship. A player with the commitment and enthusiasm which will rub off on others and the fact he can play in a variety of roles will be of great benefit. His eagerness to sign for Newry was evident and I’ve no doubt the players and fans will be glad to see him back at the club."
Darren King commented “I’m delighted to be back at Newry and hopefully my Premiership and Championship experience can add to what is already a very strong and competitive squad. I’m really looking forward to getting back on the pitch at The Showground’s and playing with some the best players in the local area, a lot of whom I know extremely well both on and off the pitch.”

New Community Walkway
The new Community Walkway around our club grounds is now open for use by ALL members of the community, both young and old, male and female. The walkway gives everyone the opportunity to walk in a safe and friendly environment all year round. So, if you fancy a power-walk or just a leisurely stroll why not avail of our new community facility.
The Crooked Lake Triathlon returned earlier this month to Camlough Lake after a three million pound investment. The project included strengthening the reservoir embankment to provide extra security in the event of heavy rainfall and the construction of a valve tower to control flows from the lake.
The weekend, the combined effort of Camlough Lake Water Festival and Feile Chamlocha had over 400 local and international visitors in attendance with Brian McCrystal from Ballymena emerging as the winner on the day.
Congratulating the organisers, former chair of Newry Mourne and Down District Council Gillian Fitzpatrick said she was thrilled to see the Lake reopened following essential repairs to the Dam. “Camlough Lake is one of our region’s fantastic resources and is a great hub for sport and community – attracting thousands of international swimmers annually. Newry Mourne and Down District Council are very proud to support this event to officially reopen the Lake.”
One of the organisers Catherine Murphy said: “The improvements to the lake have been finished so well and with great care for the beauty of the area. The new raised viewing areas and the walkway around the lake will significantly enhance spectator and competitor experience. The lake has always been a real focal point for the local community so this ‘Giant’ family focused weekend is very apt way to celebrate its reopening.
“We’re very grateful to Newry Mourne, Down District Council, to our sponsors First Derivatives, Synge and Byrne and Cathedral Eye Clinic and all the local business and the local community for their continued support,” Catherine added.
Down will be more than happy following both their wins over Armagh on Sunday at Pairc Esler in Newry in front of a 16,000 crowd. Armagh left Newry with a two point defeat in both their senior and minor Championship clashes with old rivals Down. Armagh were without manager Kieran McGeeney who had to sit out the game due to his 12 week sideline ban, with stand-in manager John Toal.
In the minor game with added time a minute in, Armagh were awarded a penalty with Tiernan Kelly taking the kick but a terrific move to the left by Down goalkeeper Jack Hazard stopped the chance of a draw at full time and although Kelly put the ball over the bar, the game was over.
In a closely fought encounter it was Down who had that little extra, keeping ahead throughout the game. Two goals from Down’s Conor McCrickard were matched by two from Armagh’s Tiernan Kelly and Ross McQuillan but it wasn’t enough.
Final score Down 2:13 Armagh 2:11.
In the senior game Armagh with two goals from Armagh’s Mark Shields and Andrew Murnin leaving them leading 2:4 to 0:9 at the end of the first half it looked like a thrilling game was in store and so it was. Armagh though only managed to score three more points in the second half with many missed opportunities.
With 10 minutes injury time already played Jamie Clarke was awarded a free and took his point to leave the final score Down 0:15 Armagh 2:7. With 47 minutes on the clock it must have been one of the longest waits for Down supporters for the end of a game but the final whistle put an end to 25 years of waiting for a Championship win over Armagh.
Final score Down 0:15 Armagh 2:7
Down seniors now have to wait and see who wins next Sunday between Cavan and Monaghan and they will play the winners on 24 June at The Athletic Grounds. Armagh will be in action the same weekend in a 1B Qualifier against Fermanagh.

Senior Men
Our senior men’s unbeaten start to the league came to an end on Sunday when they suffered a two-point defeat at home to Mullaghbawn, 1 – 17 to 1 – 15.
The Shane’s enjoyed a great start to the game and found themselves three points to the good after ten minutes, with Paul O’Rourke getting all the scores but three points in a row from Mullaghbawn had them back on level terms. Two points in as many minutes from Connaire Mackin and David McCabe edged the Shane’s in front again but four points in four in minutes gave Mullaghbawn the lead by two. However, the lead was short-lived when a deflected shot from David McCabe made its way to his brother Mark and he made no mistake from close range, flicking the ball to the Mullaghbawn net. An eighth Mullaghbawn point had the sides level again but two late points from the Shane’s, one from Conal O’Brien and a free from Paul O’Rourke saw the home side go in at the break in front, 1 – 7 to 0 – 8.
The sides exchanged points early in the second-half with Connaire Mackin on target for the Shane’s before two points on the trot from Mullaghbawn saw them draw level once more. Another point apiece kept the sides level pegging with Sean McLoughlin getting the Shane’s score before two great points from Paul O’Rourke and a brilliant side-line free from Sean McLoughlin gave the Camlough side a three-point advantage. Mullaghbawn replied with two points of their own to leave just one between them before another pointed free from O’Rourke kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s. The sides then swapped frees with O’Rourke again on target for the Shane’s before an unfortunate mistake form the Shane’s keeper, Conor McKeown, was pounced on by Mullaghbawn and they made no mistake, driving the ball to the back of the net and put them in front by one. They added on another point almost immediately with Damian Doyle replying for the Shanes but it was Mullaghbawn who got the last score of the game to claim the win, 1 – 17 to 1 – 15.
The lads will continue to train as normal before returning to action on Wednesday 14th June at home to Derrynoose.
Senior Ladies
The senior ladies are back in action on Monday night at home to Silverbridge with the game throwing in at 7.00pm.
