Newry 1’s 3-1 South Antrim 1’s
Newry hosted South Antrim in their final game of the Kirk Cup league stage before their opening match of the league campaign. The teams were evenly matched in the open stages with neither side managing to get the break through or create any clear cut opportunities. However a mistake in the Newry defence midway through the half did give South Antrim the chance to take the lead which they took full advantage of to go one up. However the lead was short lived as Newry got back on level terms when David Hogg and Colin Henning linked up well on the left hand side before firing the ball into the circle were Alex Irwin picked the ball up and finished smartly with a reverse stick shot high into the goal.

In the second half Newry started to put the South Antrim defence under some more sustained pressure and were able to force a number of short corners. David England had been moved over the top of the corners and he made the most of the opportunity as he scored with a drag flick with 10mins gone in the second half. It was soon two as again David England scored from a short corner when he reacted first after his first attempt had been charged down to fire a rocket into the South goal. The visitors started to push forward in high numbers in search of a goal to get back into the game but found Newry’s defence tough to break down and could not find that elusive goal. Newry held on to win 3-1. The Belfast Road men open their league campaign against Queens next Saturday at home at 2.30pm.
Team: Beck, J. Greer, D. England, D. Hogg, N. McKnight, C. Henning, R. Irwin, D. Andrews, K. McCombe, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, A. Irwin, M. McCullough. A. Baird
Newry 2’s 2-0 Cookstown 4’s
Newry 2’s booked their place in the semi-final of the league cup after a hard fought victory over Cookstown on Saturday. The match couldn’t have started any better as Alex Irwin scored with only five minutes gone when he was found in free in the circle before rounding the keeper and sliding the ball home. It was very quickly two when Darren Liggett pushed forward from left midfield and was found by Josh Porter, Liggett somehow managed to slip the ball under the advancing keeper as he dove full stretch to get to the ball first. Cookstown had chances of their own in the game but found Eddie Graham and Gareth Moffett in great form in defence as they smothered most attacks before they could become dangerous. Both sides were advancing in the second half trying to find another goal but neither could get the break through as the game ended 2-0 to Newry.
Team: A.Collum, G. Alderdice, D. Hogg, E. Graham, G. Moffett, M. McCaigue, D. Liggett, A. Marks, A. Irwin, S. McCafferty, J. Porter, M. McCullough, A. McMinn

The Red Bull Foxhunt returns to Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails this weekend, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October.
Red Bull has reversed the roles of hunter and fox - the hunted becomes the hunter. Two of the ‘foxes’ are worldwide, professional mountain bikers, Gee Atherton and Loic Bruni, with Gee holding several Downhill World Championship Titles and Loic currently holding the 2015 and 2017 UCI Downhill World Title. Three time winner local rider, Colin Ross from Rosco Lines also joins the ‘fox’ line-up. There will also be 50 additional riders racing down the trails this year, bringing the total number of competitors to 450.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “I am delighted to welcome the return of the Red Bull Foxhunt to the fantastic mountain bike trails in Rostrevor. Newry, Mourne and Down is positioning itself as the Outdoor Capital of Ireland and ‘epic events’ such as Red Bull Foxhunt, are instrumental in helping to showcase the district’s diverse outdoors.”
Councillor Mulgrew continued, “The focus of the Council’s Tourism Strategy, launched this year, is on creating destination experiences that are associated with the mountains and coastline. To assist in refining this ambition, the Council has been working on an Event Sport Tourism Framework. The Framework, following industry collaboration and in recognition of the superb range of outdoor event opportunities and activities, has recommended Newry, Mourne and Down positions the region as the ‘Outdoor Capital of Ireland’. In the coming months, the Council will be working with the industry to provide a platform to raise awareness of the region’s ambition to become ‘Outdoor Capital of Ireland’ and events such as Red Bull Foxhunt are paramount in helping deliver this profile internationally.”
Tourism NI Director of Marketing, Naomi Waite said, “Red Bull Foxhunt will have impact across social media before, during and after the event. Images and video footage of the stunning scenery and hair-raising mountain bike trails from the riders, their peers and mainstream media will be streamed across our key markets, resulting in many more visitors wishing to come to Northern Ireland to explore what we have to offer.”
This year’s Foxhunt has received support from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Tourism Northern Ireland and Tourism Ireland.

Minor Girls 7-Aside Blitz
Saturday saw the club host a very successful minor girls 7-aside blitz with a total of thirteen teams battling it out for the silverware: Carrickcruppen, Corofin, Magheracloone, Dromore, Emyvale, St Patricks, Cooley, Warrenpoint, Ballymaguigan, Shane O’Neill’s, Finbarrs, Killeavy and Silverbridge.
Following a great mornings football in the group and knock-out stages four teams were left standing, with host team Shane O’Neill’s taking Carrickcruppen in the shield final whilst Corofin (Galway) faced Derry side Ballymaguigan in the final of the cup. Both finals served up brilliant games of football with all four teams playing some great stuff but when the final whistles sounded Shane O’Neill’s claimed the shield win whilst Corofin picked up the cup title. Corofin player Leanne Coen was also named as the player of the tournament.

The club would like to thank all the teams who took part in the competition and helped to make it such a great success. We would also like to thank all those who helped to organise the blitz, who helped out on the day – referees, score-keepers, pitch managers, umpires, burger-makers, tea-makers, shop attendants and anyone else who helped out in any way. The club also extends its sincere gratitude to local company BM Steel who were the generous sponsors of the inaugural Shane O’Neill’s minor girls 7-aside blitz.

Newcastle Nomads 3-3 Newry Ladies
Newry travelled to Newcastle for their first away game of the new campaign. Right from the first whistle Newry were on top, dominating the play with some great passing moves. They were coming up against a resolute Newcastle defence however which they struggled to break down. They eventually got the break through after 20 minutes with Shannon Robinson popping up at the back post for a tap in after some good play from Stephanie Smart on the right wing. Newry soon made it two with Smart and Robinson again linking up for Robinson to sweep home and double Newry’s lead. Newcastle managed to pull one back against the run of play just before the break to get back into the game.
Again Newry started well in the second half and soon made it three when they were awarded a penalty stroke when the ball was stopped on the line by a Newcastle foot, Taja McIlroy stepped up and coolly slotted home. Newry then became complacent at the back as they tried to push forward to really put the game to bed. They were very wasteful in front of goal which proved costly as Newcastle pulled another goal back with 10 minutes to go. Newry then went to sleep at the back as the game moved into injury time and Newcastle got the equaliser right on the final whistle. Newry came away with a point but it will feel more like a loss after leading the game for so long.

Team: Lambe, A. Blakley, T. McIlroy, V. Lewis, R. Murdock, K. Baird, S. Rollins, K. McCullough, S. Smart, S. Robinson, L. Inns, R. Lockhart, C. Ferris, M. Gregg
Newry 2’s 3-2 Ballymena 1’s
Newry hosted Ballymena in their third game of the league cup on Saturday at their Belfast Road home. Having drawn with Kilkeel last week Newry needed a win here but this was always going to be a tough test. However they made it look easy at the start as they flew out of the traps and went one up with only five minutes gone, when a long ball from David Hogg was latched onto by alan McMinn who threaded a ball through to Simon McCafferty who showed great composure as he rounded the keeper and slide the ball home from an extremely tight angle. Newry continued to create chances but had to wait to just before half time to get their second when David Andrews picked out a great aerial ball which Alex Irwin controlled brilliantly first time and before the ball hit the ground he unleashed a ferocious shot which the Ballymena keeper could not get near. It was two nil at the break and the home side were well worth their lead.
Ballymena put up a fight in the second half and pulled one back quickly after the break to put the pressure on Newry. The pressure was building on the home side and the visitors were soon back on level terms as they got their second of the day. They could well have taken the lead only for Newry Keeper Ashley Collum to pull off some great saves to keep them at bay. With 15 minutes played in the second half David Hogg got Newry’s third firing home a great strike from a short corner. The game ebbed and flowed as both sides pushed forward. However neither goal could find the break through and the match ended 3-2 to Newry, a great hard fought victory.
Team: Collum, D. Hogg, J. Lawson, E. Graham, G. Alderdice, G. Moffett, M. McCaigue, A. Baird, D. Andrews, A. Marks, A. Irwin, M. McCullough, S. McCafferty. M. McCullough, A. Foster
Kilkeel 5-1 Newry 1’s
Newry played their third Kirk Cup group stage match taking place in Kilkeel on their brand new surface. Newry started the brighter of the two teams pinning the home side back for the open exchanges. As the half wore on Kilkeel grew into the game and were starting to look threatening on the break using their speed to great effect. Newry failed to clear the ball from their circle and Kilkeel made them pay dearly as they took a one nil lead. Only a matter of minutes later it was two as the home side scored from their first short corner of the game as Newry failed to get to the rebound first. Before Newry knew what was happening it was three as Kilkeel were showing how clinical they could be in front of goal. Newry were still getting chances of their own and were unlucky when a Matty Russell short corner was cleared off the line. Before the half time break Kilkeel made it four and effectively finishing the game.

Newry again started the half the better of the two teams but as in the first half Kilkeel soon got into it can could have easily added to their four first half goals but were more wasteful in front of goal in the second half. However they did get their fifth when they stole the ball from Newry in midfield and sliced through the defence for an easy tap in at the back post. Newry did manage to get a consolation goal as they were awarded a stroke for a stick tackle on the line which Colin McKnight slotted home. Newry now have a break before they play South Antrim in their final group game in which they will be hoping to get back on the winning trail.
Team: Beck, C. Henning, D. England, A. Baird, J. Greer, C. McKnight, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, M. Russell, K. McCombe, M. McCullough, K. Fletcher, A. Irwin
Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 7 – Donaghadee 2nd XI 1
On Saturday 23rd September 2017, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Donaghdee at home in the first match of their new season.
Donaghadee won the toss and chose pass back. Within the first 20 seconds Donaghadee kept possession where their centre forward drove the ball up into the Newry circle and scored. With this early goal Newry were quick to retaliate and were soon to win a short corner where Shannon Robinson took a shot on goal and the ball was deflected into the goal off a Donaghadee stick. The scoreline didn't remain 1 each for long as through great team effort in mid field, Taja McIlroy played a great ball to Kathryn Baird who sent the ball into the circle from outside the 25m line where Laverne Inns inside the circle deflected the ball into the goal for her first of the game. Newry maintained strong possession where they had a few more chances but Donaghadees defence kept the score 2-1 until half time.
During the second half Newry continued to keep the pressure on Donaghadee right from the start with some great play by forwards Stephanie Smart and Inns and it wasn't long before Newry scored again. Smart yet again won a short corner for Newry where Laverne Inns scored from a straight strike deflected off the keeper into the net. Donaghadee didn't have many chances as Newry showed strong defence from Laura Simpson and Abbie Blakley who made some great passes down the pitch to the forwards where Robinson played a splendid pass into to Inns who popped the ball into the net scoring to complete her hat trick.
Newry continued to play hard and by the final whistle the score was 7-1 to Newry. Player of the match was captain Kathryn Baird in midfield.
NOHC Team: K Baird (Captain), T McIlroy, L Simpson, A Blakely, V Lewis, L Gamble, C Lambe, S Rollins, G Davidson, DL Inns, S Robinson, S Smart, A Murphy

U10s
Our U10 attended Killeavy’s annual tournament on Sunday to bring an end to their footballing season. They found themselves alongside Dromintee, Pearse Ogs and Culloville in the group stages and following some tough games where the where the young Shane’s put in a great effort they progressed to the shield quarter-final. This game saw them face another Dromintee team and the Shane’s came out strong from the start and clocked up a couple of early scores which helped them qualify for the semi-final. Killeavy awaited the young Shane’s in the semi-final and again they started the stronger side and went into an early three-point lead. Killeavy got back to within a point but the Shane’s stood firm and tagged on a couple of further points to see them through to the shield final. Culloville were the opponents in the final, a side which had beaten the Shanes convincingly in the group stage, so the Camlough side knew they were in for a tough game. Culloville began the much better side and led by two points early on but the Shanes showed some great skill and determination to cancel out the deficit and the sides went into the half-time interval all-square. Both sides served a brilliant second-half of football exchanging scores throughout but it was the young Shanes who eventually emerged victorious by one point to claim the shield. A great day was had by all and it was great to finish the season with another great win. Well done to all the players and their management team for all their hard-work and commitment throughout the year.
