Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 6 – NICS 4s 0
On Saturday 11th November 2017, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played NICS 4s at Stormont.
NICS won the toss giving Newry passback. From the whistle Newry put the NICS ladies under pressure with great passing from the mids and forwards and within a couple of minutes Newry were awarded their first penalty corner but was well saved by the NICS keeper. Newry maintained possession and with great defending from centre back Abbie and sweeper Laura the ball was driven down the left hand side to Rachael in mid who passed the ball to forward Shannen who passed the ball across the circle to Stephanie at the right post deflectingthe ball into the net.

Newry continued to squeeze NICS and with some great passes from the mids to the forwards line, Newry were awarded their 2nd goal with 1 minute to half time where the ball was yet again passed across the circle by Shannen to Stephanie on the right post making the score 2 nil to Newry at halftime.
Newry came out strong at the beginning of the second half and with great marking by the defense NICS had little opportunities of entering the Newry circle. Newry's left back Victoria made a lovely pass down the left hand side to left winger Shannen who drove the ball into NICS circle taking it on her strong side and putting the ball past the keeper, awarding Newry their 3rd goal.
It wasn't long before Newry were awarded a penalty corner where Kathryn at the left post deflected the ball into the net. Newry were able to keep possession of the ball and within minutes later Newry were awarded yet another penalty corner where Kathryn yet again deflected the ball into the net at the left post putting Newry 5 nil up.
NICS were soon to break but were unable to finish as the circle was well covered by the Newry keeper. With 5 minutes until full time, right mid Kathryn scored a cracker of a goal taking the ball around 2 NICS players before entering the circle and putting the ball into the roof of the net, awarding Kathryn with a hattrick.
The final score was 6 nil to Newry. Player of the match was awarded to Kathryn who scored the fabulous last goal of the match for Newry.

Newry 1’s 0-2 Instonians 1’s
Newry hosted Instonians on Saturday in their latest Premier League fixture.
The league favourites were pushed back by Newry early on as the home side started well and forced a number of short corners but were unable to convert. Instonians managed to win a short corner of their own and when Greer stopped it on the line but deflected onto his foot, a penalty stroke was awarded. Lindsay Beck in goal for Newry made himself big and denied Instonians the lead with a great save.
Both sides tried to find the first goal but at the half way mark it was 0-0.
Instonians started well in the second half and again forced a few short corners. Greer again took one of the line to keep the score level. Newry managed to create a few opportunities but as in recent weeks, they could just not find the decisive touch in the final third. With 10 minutes remaining Instonians fires Home a short took take a 1-0 lead, and as Newry pushed forward looking for the equaliser, they were caught on the break the away side doubled their lead to take all three points.

Shane’s Senior Ladies to Visit China
Following hot on the heels of UUJ men’s GAA team, Shane O Neill’s senior ladies football team will also be travelling to China for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period from 30th December until 13th January.
Since June of this year the ladies have been very generously sponsored by Confucius Institute, a branch of the Chinese Ministry of Education based in UUJ and they have facilitated and funded the Chinese trip. This visit is classed as an academic and cultural exchange under the Study in China programme and will see a travelling party of 30, consisting of players and mentors, making the trip. They will initially arrive into Beijing before travelling to 3 different universities (Wuhan, Huangshi and Yitchang) over a 9-day period.

The girls and their mentors are already participating weekly Mandarin lessons at the club in preparation for the trip and each morning in China they will take part in University classes, learning about Chinese language, culture, history and contemporary society. The afternoons will be spent demonstrating and coaching Gaelic football to the Chinese students. This format will be followed until returning to Beijing for 4 days of guided sightseeing with visits to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Olympic Stadium and Tiananmen Square being arranged, with no doubt some time being set aside for the much-vaunted shopping therapy.
This represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience and learn so much about the rich culture of this fascinating country and Shane O’Neill’s will be the first GAA club to undertake such a visit. This incredible opportunity represents an investment in the future reputation of our club and even more so in our players, who have always been excellent ambassadors for club and county over the years. It goes without saying of course that this experience will certainly add to the personal and professional development of all involved, especially those who are training and studying in the fields of education and business.
Everyone making the journey are currently going through the visa application process while continuing with basic language and cultural lessons. There is considerable growing media interest in the trip, being such a unique opportunity to promote ladies football and the wider business and educational prospects for young women and we shall strive to keep everyone updated as everything progresses.
U21s
Our U21 amalgamation of Patrick Rankins made it two wins from two on Sunday afternoon with a ruthless display of football, defeating Carrickcruppen on a score-line of 8 – 25 to 2 – 4.
For the second week running the Rankins played with a strong breeze at their backs in the opening half and played some great attacking football and prevented their opponents from getting any kind of foot-hold in the game. They were clinical in front of the posts and by half-time they led by 6 – 16 to 0 – 2.
The Rankins continued to boss proceedings during the second period and added a further 2 – 9 to their total, with Carrickcruppen registering an additional 2 – 2. Overall it was a very convincing performance from the side with every one of the lads playing some football which will see them all vying for places in next week’s final group game against Ballyhegan which is scheduled for next Sunday at 12 noon in Correnshigo.

On Saturday 4th November 2017, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Rainey Ladies at home in the first round of the Intermediate Cup.
Rainey won the toss and chose pass back. From the whistle Rainey put the pressure on and had some good passes down towards Newry's circle but with great tackles from Newry's sweeper Laura Simpson,

they were quick to win the ball back preventing Rainey from entering the Home circle. Newry's defense worked well around the back to distribute the ball up to Rollins in left mid who laid a pass of to Shannen Robinson in left wing who drove the ball into the circle and put the ball past the keeper awarding Newry with the first goal of the match. The ball was injected out by Kathryn to Shannon at the top of the circle who took a straight shot on goal but was rebounded out by the goalie where Suzy had a strike on goal but was yet again deflected off the goalie onto the end of Laverne's stick who flicked the ball over the goalie into the back of the net awarding Newry the first goal of the game.
With not long to go until half time, Newry defense continued to keep Rianey out of Newry's circle where sweeper Simpson distributed the ball up to the mid field where Kathryn Baird in centre mid drove the ball forward and laid a pass off to centre forward Laverne who passed the ball into the circle to Stephanie Smart at the right who passed across the circle to Robinson at the left post who put the ball into the back of the net.

Ballymena 1’s 2-2 Newry 2’s
Newry travelled to Ballymena on Saturday in their latest league match against the league favourites. The home side were well drilled and started well, but Newry were strong in defence and were able to keep them at bay. It was Newry who had the first chance which fell to McCafferty but he was unable to convert. With 20mins gone, Ballymena went one up after a quick counter attack. However Newry went straight up the other end to win a short corner and scored with Simon McCafferty driving the ball home.
The second half went much the same as the first with both sides cancelling eachother out. With 15mins remaining Ballymena got their second after the ball trickled over the line from a short corner. Newry huffed and puffed but could not find a break through, however with only 2 minutes remaining they won a short corner and again Simon McCafferty was on hand to show a Cool head and slot the ball Home into the corner to give Newry a share of the points.

Craobh Rua Camlocha Hurling Club held their prize night at St. Paul’s High School, Bessbrook marking what was a historic year for the club. Joining them as guests on the night were Seán McAlinden, Armagh County Board representative and none other than Joe Canning the Captain of the 2017 All Ireland Winning Galway Hurling team. Joe was present at the request of the Quinn family to offer support to all in the club after the passing of their son Patrick who was a keen Hurler and member of our Under 16 squad.

Craobh Rua committee member Pat Mc Ginn acted as host on the night and he began by inviting Club Chairperson Raymond Watters to say a few words of welcome to the players, parents and the schools. The Craobh Rua secretary Labhrás Bradley then provided a quick summary of this year’s coaching section of the club’s Annual Report and in so doing he acknowledged the contribution of club coaches and local schools to the continued success of the club. He outlined how the club has developed in relation to the increased numbers now participating at each age group, its strengthened delivery structures and the improved knowledge of Hurling at all levels within the club.
The presentation of medals was next on the agenda as each age group from U8s to U14s were invited up to the stage to receive their medals which were presented by County Board representative Seán McAlinden. The Richard Hughes Memorial shield was presented by Club Chairman Raymond Watters to Under 10 player Ben O’Hare for the hard work and dedication he has demonstrated throughout the year. Seán McAlinden congratulated all involved in underage development in the club and said that it was impressive to look down the hall and see it filled with young people, their parents and their coaches. Seán spoke of the sheer delight he had witnessed in the Athletic Grounds on the night the U16’s won the Championship after what was a highly competitive and skilful game of Hurling. The Club’s Pat Mc Ginn then reflected on the contributions of previous generations of Hurling people from this area and said that the efforts of this year’s Under 16s had added another colourful chapter to that illustrious history.
Pat then invited Club Chairperson Raymond Watters to introduce Joe Canning, our surprise guest for the night. Joe Canning said he was honoured and privileged to be invited to Craobh Rua’s presentation. He told the young players to play as many sports as they wanted, to enjoy learning new skills while they continued to improve on their existing skills.

The U16 team’s 2017 League and Championship medals were then presented to them by Joe. Upon receiving both the League and Championship cups U16 team Captain Cormac Murphy thanked the team mentors and all in the club who had helped them over the years. He reflected on the level of commitment and dedication all on the team had demonstrated over the past year. A presentation was then made by U16 players Tiarnach Lewis and Tiarnán O’Hare on behalf of the club to Joe Canning of a lovely picture painted by local artist Shona Malone. A new cup called the Patrick Quinn cup was then awarded to Fearghal Cooney, for his dedication and his commitment to the U16 team throughout the entire year. This was the first year of the Patrick Quinn Cup which was kindly donated by Patrick’s parents Mary and Gerard Quinn.
Pat Mc Ginn then drew proceedings to a close by thanking all those who attended, especially guests Joe Canning and Seán Mc Alinden. All teams were then invited into the gymnasium for team photographs while refreshments were served in the main hall. This was one of the most enjoyable nights in recent club history, and a big thank you goes to everyone who helped in anyway especially Mr Burns and the staff of St Paul’s High School for their help and for the use of the school facilities.

U21s
Our U21 amalgamation of Patrick Rankins got their campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a six-point win over Grange in Correnshigo, 2 – 14 to 1 – 11.
The Rankins played with a strong wind at their backs in the first-half and opened the scoring through Mark McCabe with Grange getting the next two points to edge ahead. Mark McCabe equalised before a Matthew Girvan point put the Rankins back in front again. The sides then swapped a point apiece with Eamon McCabe scoring for the home side before a fifth point for Grange put them one ahead again but three points in a row from Matthew Girvan, Mark McCabe and Ryan Quinn gave the Rankins a two-point advantage. It could have been even more minutes later but the Grange keeper made a great finger-tip save to deny Matthew Girvan from close range. This save lifted the visitors and with their next attack they registered the first goal of the contest to put them one front but Declan Loye replied for the Rankins with a well taken goal to see his side lead by two at the break, 1 – 7 to 1 – 5.

The sides shared a point each in the early stages of the second-half with Matthew Girvan firing over for the Rankins before points from Mark McCabe and Girvan again put them four to the good. Grange replied with a well taken pointed free before Mark McCabe rounded off a great Rankins move by firing the ball to the net which was quickly followed up by another Matthew Girvan point. An eight point for Grange was quickly cancelled out by an Oisin O’Callaghan score before the sides swapped another point apiece with Ryan Quinn on target for the home team. Matthew Girvan popped over his sixth point of the game to give the Rankins an eight-point lead with Grange registering the last two scores but the Rankins had done enough to claim the win, 2 – 14 to 1 – 11.

Harlequin’s 1’s 4-0 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Deramore Park on Saturday to take on Harlequins on Saturday in their second game of the premier league season. The score line does not reflect the match whatsoever as Newry somehow managed to miss countless chances.
Newry started strongly and were pinning the home side back but could not make their pressure count, they were made to pay as ‘Quins caught them on the break and scored against the run of play. Newry continued to press forward and were creating chances but could just not apply the finishing touches. Veteran keeper Ian Kelly in the ‘Quins goals was having a blinding game and made a sublime stick save from a David England short corner. At half time it was one nil but the visitors were confident they could get back into the game.

Newry flew out of the traps in the second half and again created plenty of opportunities. Mark McCullough seen his attempt roll along the line with Alex Irwin just unable to stretch far enough to tap in. Within minutes Kyle McCombe bamboozled the home defence and was left with just the keeper to beat on the line but lost control at the vital moment. From the resulting clearance Colin McKnight won the ball back and again with just the keeper to beat, was unable to convert. It was Mathew Russell’s turn to be denied by the keeper who dived bravely at his feet to block his shot, the ball fell to McKnight but his shot was cleared off the line. Newry were again caught on the break and were two down against the run of play. From another attack Mathew Russell was again denied, this time a defender on the line cleared after he had blasted past the keeper.
Quin’s showed Newry how to score as again they broke on the counter attack and made it three. Newry were now loosing shape as they tried somehow to find a way back into the game with fifteen minutes to go. Irwin and McKnight again missed chances before Harlequins made it four. A score line that the visitors could now believe at the final whistle. Newry travel to Kilkeel on Friday evening for their next game.
Result: Newry 2’s 1-2 Mossely 2’s
Goal Scorer: Simon McCafferty.
Team: Beck, D. England, N. McKnight, A. Baird, J. Greer, C. Henning, R. Irwin, M. Russell, C. McKnight, K. McCombe, M. McCullough, K. Fletcher, A. Irwin
Newry 1’s 3-2 Queens 1’s
Newry hosted Queens on Saturday in the opening fixture of the new Premier League season managing to come away with all three points after a hard fought win.
The visitors started brightly, passing the ball well around the back without really causing Newry many problems. As the half wore on Newry started to control the play and were looking dangerous up front, but as in recent weeks they were being wasteful in front of goal squandering a number of short corners and were unlucky not to take the lead when Matty Russell hit the cross bar with a flick.

Russell didn’t have to wait long however to get his next chance and after Robert Irwin picked Kyle McCombe out in the circle who swivelled and got an early shot away Russell was on hand at the back post to deflect it goalwards to put Newry 1 nil up. Queens however had different ideas and within two minutes were back on level terms after breaking on the counter attack and fired rocket high into the Newry goal. As half time approached Newry won a short corner and David England converted this time with a low drag flick to the keepers right hand side to give Newry a 2-1 lead at the break.
The home side dominated most of the play in the second half with Queens struggling to get out of their own half. Again Newry were getting into threatening positions but were not clinical with their finishing. Queens were looking for the equaliser and started to fire players forward which left the game very open. With 3 minutes remaining the visitors got their equaliser with a smart finish at the back post. However Newry did not give up and somehow managed to find one more chance, with Colin McKnight picking the ball up after a run from Robert Irwin in the circle and slapped the ball past the Queens keeper with only seconds left in the game. Newry will host Raphoe in their next match in the league on Friday evening.
Team: Beck, D. Hogg, D. England, N. McKnight, J. Greer, R. Irwin, C. Henning, M. Russell, K. McCombe, C. McKnight, M. McCullough, A. Irwin, J. Gregg
