Rostrevor is preparing for an invasion of Mountain Bikers next month for it's 2013 Mountain Bike Festival which will be run over three days from the fourth to the sixth of May.
Rostrevor will be offering 26km of red/black graded cross country trails and 2 downhill tracks and is described by local bikers as the 'epicentre' for all off-road cycling disciplines in Northern Ireland.
The Rostrevor Mountainbike Festival in Association with Newry & Mourne District Council will take place on the May bank holiday weekend. Six hundred plus Mountain bikers from every corner of the country will be in attendance to celebrate this very unique experience. Not only will this be the largest gathering of mountain bikers ever in the country but it will be the first time 3 disciplines have been contested at the same venue over the one weekend.
Co-ordinator for the event and local mountain biker Glyn O'Brien has commented "These are exciting times for local bikers and it will be a huge boost for our economy. We are encouraging everyone to get involved, please come along to the festival and celebrate with us. It's a great opportunity to learn about our sport and it's never too late to get started!"
Mayor John McArdle commented "This is a excellent opportunity to showcase the new mountain bike trails at Rostrevor and get things in place for the forthcoming World Police & Fire Games in August".
Practice kicks off on Saturday 4th May and 3 local clubs each specialising in different disciplines will be organising the events to ensure a very special rider experience. Chainreaction Cycles club will be organising round 2 of the Irish Downhill Mountainbike Series (IDMS) on 5th May, Dromara Cycling Club will be organising round 2 of the Ulster Cross Country Series on the 5th May and Plush MTB will be organising an Open Enduro event on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May.

Dundalk Mavericks are keen to encourage any Newry people that would be interested in playing for them to give it a try. The 'Mavericks are a new American Football Team set up in November.
The Club currently has up to 25 guys at training every week, and are looking for about 20 more! Commenting on the recruitment a spokesperson said "This sport has room for so many people, in that you have 11 guys on offense, 11 guys on defense and 11 guys who make up special teams. And you need different types of people for different types of scenarios on the field. And subs. So all in all the true motto of the sport is the more the merrier.
"The type of people we would be looking for is nearly unlimited. Big, tall, large small, tiny, wiry, built, from athletes to someone who has never played a sport and thought they never could, american football has a place for so many. From little guys to incredible hulk size guys. Its an all encompassing game, one of the few in the country.
"At the moment we are recruiting over 18 years of age players and you'd be surprised how many people in their 40's and even 50's are kitting out for teams across the country. If we can be successful in establishing this senior team and making it a permanent fixture, then there is great potential in the future for things such as a youth team, a women's flag team and so forth. The possibilities will be endless for us in the future."
The idea for the club came from local players experience with Drogheda Lightning American Football Club who won the league. "One of the players was in Dundalk college and we were chatting about what potential there was for a team given Dundalks fantastic sporting tradition. So we struck while the iron was hot and myself and a few close friends took our experience and decided to set up in Dundalk. A huge advantage was also the massive catchment area, stretching up as far as Newry and its surrounding towns as well as down to Dunleer, Castlebellingham etc We have a great area to recruit in"
With the definition of Maverick as "Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence" it was a perfect name.
No doubt helping this independence the Club has enlisted Head Coach Sarah Matthews, the only female Head Coach of American Football in Ireland.
Dundalk is a thriving and industrious town with a fantastic history for supporting community sports cubs. American football is a very unique game for Ireland and naturally brings with it plenty of glamour and razzmatazz where ever it goes. We would hope that from small businesses to large multi-national corporations would not only see the chance to get behind something so unique, but see the potential for its impact on quite large stage.
Last year Navy vs Notre Dame in the Aviva was a super event for the country, not to mention the GIFT programme bringing many high school teams from America and Canada to Ireland for matches that took place in both Navan and Dublin. This year the Atlantic Cup, which is European American Football Competition takes place in Dublin and IAFL Shamrock Bowl winners Belfast Trojans will be competing in the tournament. These kinds of events are growing in size and notoriety and if we can get the support now in our initial stages as a club from the local community, there is no reason why great events like this couldn't eventually be taking place in Dundalk with the whole town behind them
We also have a flag team established which anyone can participate in. The session takes place on Thursday nights from 7-9 in the DKIT sports grounds.
We have a facebook page that everyone is free to go and check out its just facebook.com/dundalkmavericks and there you'll find the contact details for the club or you can email us at dundalkmavericks@gmail.com

Thomas Davis Corrinshego 0-8 St. Michael’s Killean 1-5
Corrinshego got their league campaign off to a start with a battling draw against near neighbours and rivals St. Michael’s Killean. After the heavy rain the previous evening, both the Craobh Rua and Killean pitches were deemed unplayable, resulting in the match being played in the unusual surroundings of St. Colman’s College. This was probably the first time that an Armagh fixture took place in the famed Newry school, even though it’s in Armagh!
Playing against a very strong wind the Corrinshego defence of Mark McAteer, John NcIllroy and R. McLoughlin worked hard to limit the Killean attacks, resulting in the game being scoreless until the 13minute when Killean opened their account from a 21m free. On 17minutes Killean doubled their account, to leave 0-2 between the sides. On 20 minutes a great run by Paul Heatley resulted in him being fouled, however the resulting free hit the post and went wide. With an increased effort in midfield from David Lenaghan and R. McWilliam resulted in a fine point from James Dinsmore after been set up by D. Lenaghan. Corrinsheho were now on top, even playing against the wind and on 24minutes Cathal Trainor saw a shot hit the post when it seemed certain that it was a score. Two minutes before half-time Killean responded with a point to leave it 0-3 to 0-1 in their favour at the break.
On the resumption Ryan O’ Reilly replaced Adrian McCourt in the forwards and scored an inspirational score 30seconds into the break. Corrinshego were now competley on top but unfortunately were shooting a number of wides. On 38 minutes David Murphy, making his debut after his transfer from Mullaban Cullchluainn’s scored a great point from out on the right. The momentum was with the men in maroon and white and Cathal Trainor 0-1 and D. Lenaghna on 43 minutes with a point left the scores 0-5 to 0-3 in favour of Corrinshego. A goal chance by Ryan O’Reilly on 42 minutes went narrowly wide but a minute later Ryan scored a point from a free after D. Murphy was fouled. This was our last score until the 60th minute. In the intervening period Killean responded with a point and then a killer of a goal which came in off the post to give Killean a 1-5 to 0-7 lead. Thomas Davis kept plugging a way, unfortunately shooting many wides until Paul Heatley scored a great equaliser to leave the score 0-8 to 1-5. Moment later referee Joe Murtagh blew the final whistle. The final whistle resembled a defeat rather than a draw, which shows how far as a club we have come in that only a victory was of paramount importance. The game saw both David Murphy and Conor Loye make their Senior League debuts and Paddy Smyth also played after a long absence. Worringly Corrinshego shot 17 wides over the sixty minutes. Next week we are away to Killeavey.

Down County P.R.O Paul Rooney and his editorial team were one of the deserved winners of the GAA's 2012 McNamee Awards for the Best 2012 Programme.
The Programme in question was the Down Senior Football Championship Programme in October 2012. The programme containing 72 pages, made great use of photography throughout, had an interview with the 2012 Maiden of the Mournes Anna Gonzales who talked about what Scor meant to her, an article on the Mayobridge Band, interview with Legend Benny Coulter and not forgetting a down memory lane article on the Down Cork All Ireland Minor Final of 1977.
A GAA spokesperson added "An immense amount of credit must go to Down County Board PRO Paul Rooney and his editorial team whose obvious attention to detail at planning stage, along with strong adherence to design, resulted in a very easy-to-read, accurate and comprehensive publication that is not just a great source of match-day and county related information but a fine memento of the day."
The Awards, the GAA National Communication and Media Awards are named after the late Pádraig McNamee, former President of the GAA, Chairman of the GAA Commission (1969-1971) and member of RTÉ authority. They are presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made by individuals and Association units in the area of media and communications.
Adding his congratulations Down supporters club chairman Seamus McClean said "The 72 page full colour programme which was full of statistics, player profiles and lots of past history was a real collector’s item. He started working on the Allianz league programmes in 2005 which he puts a lot effort into and this year he produced the Cork and Mayo home programmes in six days which is almost impossible. This honour is well deserved."
Keep ‘er Lit
Down star Kevin McKernan is visiting all the Down clubs over the weekend taking penalties and raising much needed funds for his uncle Mark McKernan’s vital medical treatment and for charity Brainwaves NI
Kevin was at Jack Mackin Park on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. There was a great local turnout for this event (Kevin’s mum Therese is a Meadow woman and really a St John Bosco member at heart – even though she now lives in Burren!)
We wish Kevin well on his fund raising journey and send our best wishes to his uncle Mark. For the record Kevin may have scored against the best county keepers in Ireland but Bosco keeper Larry McAlinden kept him scoreless on this occasion. www.faceboo.com/keep.er.lit.13

St John Bosco GAC Seniors
Seniors Bounce Back
Attical 0-10 St John Bosco 1-08
The seniors bounced back from last weeks league defeat to grind out a hard fought win in Attical on Friday night. This was a win which clearly displayed the players 'never say die' attitude. Thanks to a late Paddy Magill major grabbed a deserved win when wastefulness in front of goal looked likely to condemn them to a second successive defeat to a determined Attical side. Dispute making lots of chances throughout the game, the shooting boots had obviously been left at home as the wides count mounted throughout the hour.
Playing against the elements in the first half, scores from Conal Gallagher, Kevin Faloon, Declan Byrne and a Paul McKeown free gave the lads a slender 1 point advantage 0:4 to 0:3 at the break.
Once again a slow start to the second half saw Bosco fall behind and they trailed 0.6-0.4 ten minutes in. Two Neil Tumilty points drew them level but many more scores were missed and Attical moved back in front 8-6. Tumilty pulled one back before Attical capitalised on some mistakes to go 10-7 ahead with time nearly up.
With only a few minutes left the team found themselves 3 points behind but a quick fire goal and point in the space of 2 minutes turned the game on its head and got the boys their first win of the new season. The Bosco men refused to give up and wing back Magill ventured deep into the Attical half and managed to get on the end of a loose ball before calmly side footing home to level.
With the smell of victory in their nostrils Bosco poured forward and Paul McKeown’s driving run was rewarded with an excellent point which proved to be the winner. Nerves were still to be tested when the previously reliable Attical free taker missed a difficult effort to level with the last kick! Two good points gained away from home and confidence should be high as Bredagh visit next week. Bosco line out, L McAlinden, E Toner, C Murtagh, S Byrne, A Rooney, R Lynch, P Magill, D Byrne, C Duggan, C Gallagher, G Moan, K Faloon, P McKeown, N Tumilty, D Morgan. A Beattie was the only sub used.
Next game is on Friday night at 7 o clock in Jack Mackin Park against Bredagh – full support needed please!
St John Bosco GAC U16’s
U16 Boys Division 2 All County Football League
Round 1 - April 4th 2013 Kilcoo v St. John Bosco
Kilcoo 1:6 St. John Bosco 2:12
The Bosco U16’s kicked off their first competitive game of the season on 4th April with a decisive win over Kilcoo. Deep snow lingering in Kilcoo meant that this game was switched to Jack Mackin Park. Micheal Dillon slotted over Bosco’s first score after both teams made a jittery start with balls dropped short and possession squandered by both sets of players. Further scores from Jordan Pennington and Oisin Carnegie and a goal from Pennington saw a half time score stand 1:9 to Kilcoo’s 2 points.
The second half continued in a similar vein with a solid Bosco defence scrapping for every ball and thwarting the Kilcoo attacks. Kilcoo fought bravely and indeed showed flashes of excellent play when they counter attacked and played direct football. Too often however they overcooked their passing leaving the Bosco lads ample opportunity to turn the ball over.
A lack of discipline amongst Bosco players saw Kilcoo take a quick free to slot the ball past Seamus Brady who stood no chance with his defenders off guard. Overall however, Bosco looked in control and demonstrated some excellent examples of fielding, defence and attack and justly deserved these first 2 league points.
Round 2 – April 11th 2013 St. John Bosco v Castlewellan
St. John Bosco 2:6Castlewellan 0:9
It was clear from the throw in that Castlewellan were in a determined mood and created the first of the scoring opportunities and generally looked much sharper. The visitors opened the scoring from a free but despite their best efforts it was Castlewellan’s wayward shooting that was to be their downfall as they certainly created plenty of scorable opportunities.
Bosco did get on the attack and in one beautiful move, Conor McGovern won the ball under pressure, laid it off to the goalward racing Micheal Dillon who made no mistake.
For so early in the season this was a really entertaining and exciting game played at full throttle by both teams. Half time saw Bosco in the lead but only just and that was with the aid of a strong breeze. Bosco seemed more focused and disciplined in the second period and despite facing the headwind and also managed to up the intensity. Oisin Carnegie, Jordan Pennington and Joshua Monroe all slotted over scores but Castlewellan responded and seemed better under the high ball.
In a final move Jordan Pennington powered his way through the visitors defence and hammered the ball to the back of the net. There was no way back for Castlewellan and at the final whistle Pennington’s goal was the difference in the two teams.
The scheduled Round 3 match between Bryansford and Bosco due 18th April was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, new fixture TBC. Also note that the next game at home to St. Pauls will be played on Wednesday 24th at 7:00pm (not Thursday as normal).
St John Bosco GAC U14’s
Longstone 3-07 Bosco 7-04
Bosco under 14 boys travelled to Longstone on Monday last and earned a well deserved victory. This game was played in difficult conditions with a strong wind a heavy rain showers throughout. Longstone elected to play with the wind in the first half which meant Bosco were fighting a rearguard action. However Bosco worked hard and some great defensive play allied to three goals from James Harkin operating at centre half forward kept them in touch. Half time score Longstone 2-05, Bosco 3-00.
With the wind a their back Bosco took the game to the opposition and were the dominant team. Tireless work by Tiarnan Holmes, Glenn Hanna and Sean Rafferty in defence kept Longstone down to two points in the second half. Allied to this Rory Mc Parland (2-01), Kane Rossiter (2-01) and a point a piece for Dean Morgan and Daniel Mc Gibbon gave Bosco a comfortable lead, a lead they never looked like losing.
All in all a good team performance. Next up Clann Na Derg at home on Monday 22nd April at 7.00pm
St John Bosco GAC U12 Girls
Bosco Under 12 Girls start with a league victory
St John Bosco vs St peter’s Warrenpoint Saturday 20th April 2013 venue St Colman’s College
The Bosco under 12 girls had a great result against local rivals Warrenpoint in their opening league match at St Colman’s College on Saturday. The midfield pair of Aine McCabe and Aoibheann Quinn dominated this area and provided great support to the forward line. Nicola Downey scored several excellent scores including a fisted point in the second half. Katie Grant and Aimee Murtagh won great possession against a strong Warrenpoint defence and Aime O’Hanlon and Niamh Burns competed well.
The decision to play Eden Casey at full back proved to be a good one as Warrenpoint spurred on by the Howlett girls had several shots well blocked. Sarah Gorman was a rock at the centre of the defence and helped Bosco to break quickly in the second half.
There were also good performances from Caitlin Murphy; Iona Reynolds; Nicole Cunningham and Kerry Lavery
Scorers Nicola Downey (3: 3); Aine McCabe (1: 1); Aoibheann Quinn (1: 2);
FINAL SCORE Bosco 5: 06 Warrenpoint 4: 05
St John Bosco GAC U10’s
Sunday 21st April St John Bosco vs. Drumintee Venue St Patrick’s P.S.
Once again the U10’s were able to field 2 teams against strong opposition.
Matthew Monroe in for his first competitive game at U10 level was in midfield for the Ógs beside Bosco new comer Killian Quinn and both lads controlled the centre of the park. Full backs Cormac White and Shea Malone kept the Drumintee forwards at bay and protected keeper Josh Hanna well.
With Nathan Gribben and James Boyle missing FROM THE Gaels squad, mentor Kevin Hughes had to re-jig his side and slot Cormac Flannigan into midfield beside Pól Óg McCormack and Joshua Madigan into the forward line beside Daniel Preece. This was another hard fought win for the Gaels and showed that their winter training is paying off.
Next week’s game away to Drumintee, meet at St Patrick’s P.S. at 10:30

Serious fund raising is needed to ensure the Club survives as it stands, and also work out a plan to stimulate youth Hockey in Newry and the surrounding areas.
Newry 3rds 4-1 Lisnagarvey 6ths
P. Elmore, A. Baird, K. best, A. McGaffin, E. Graham, J. Niblock, J. McWilliams, L. Irvine, D. England, S. Sarvey, D. Lawson, S. Blakley
Newry 3s hosted Lisnagarvey 6s in the semi-final of the minor cup, and booked their place in their 3rd cup final in as many years.
With 3 of Newrys players playing at the inter pros in Dublin, this was going to be an even tougher game.
Newry started defensive, not knowing what to expect from the Lisnagarvey forwards, however Newry held their own and managed to get a few shots at the Lisnagarvey keeper.
Lisnagarvey responded to Newrys attacks by winning a short corner which they scored, beating the Newry keeper with a shot at the far post.
Newry soon levelled the score through centre midfielder Stephen Garvey, who picked up his first goal of the season.
Lisnagarvey continued to apply pressure and secured another short corner. Newry keeper Elmore kept out the initial shot, however Newry would have been a goal down only for defender eddy graham who kept out Garveys second shot at the far post.
Newry and Garvey continued to battle for possession throughout the first half, with Newry coming out on top, scoring just before half time through another short corner. The Newry shot on goal took a deflection from a Lisnagarvey stick, giving Newry a 2-1 lead at the break.
Newry continued to maintain possession in the second half and were rewarded when Davy England volleyed the ball in at the back post for the third.
Further efforts from Jonny mc Williams and Lee Irvine were kept out by the Garvey keeper.
Towards the end of the half, Lisnagarvey pushed for goals but were caught out when the ball was worked out of the Newry defence to forward Jonny Mc Williams. Mc Williams dribbled it up the left wing and crossed the ball into the D where Davy England slid in and deflected the ball past the Garvey keeper.
Following their 4-1 win over Lisnagarvey 6s, Newry now progress to their 3rd consecutive minor cup final where they will face Kilkeel 3s in what will be Newrys toughest game of the season.
A Tally of five Gold medals and four Silver, one Bronze and two ribbons was the amazing acheivement of local Special Olympics horse riding team, Saddle and Reins Equestrian Club and their head coach Wendy McCrea when they competed recently at the Special Olympic Regional Advancement Equestrian Competition in Colleraine.
