U-10 Challenge Match Sunday 28th April 2013
Thomas Davis Corrinshego 2-8 Whitecross 4-2
Thomas Davis Corrinshego U-10’s had their first outing of the year when they drew with a competitive Whitecross team at Corrinshego on Sunday. Played in bright sunshine Corrinshego were on top from the start through Dean Bradley and Ronan Casey who performed heroics at midfield.
With Ciaran Higgins working hard in the forwards, Corrinshego were always in contention. Special mention to Jarlath Jennings who played a ‘stormer’ at center-halt back and prevented many a Whitecross attack. When switched to corner back Danny Sheilds had an influential impact on the game. Other to impress were Michael Mallon who started in goals, Holly Loye and Lucy Brown who never gave up. This was an encouraging start for our young cubs, especially Ronan Casey who finished the game with 1-4. Corrinshego would like to thank Henry McCloy who refereed the game.
Corrinshego: Michael Mallon, Jarlath Jennings, Adam Travers, Caoimhe Mallon, Ronan Casey, Dean Bradley, Lucy Mallon, Michael Mallon, Holly Loye, Danny Shields, Liam O’Brien, Ciaran Higgins, Sub: Shea Mallon

Corrinshego v Clady Emmetts
This second league match of the season for corrinshego u14s was without doubt the most difficult of the season so far for the young team but also the most rewarding. This was an old fashioned game of football where the team had to dig in and fight for this most deserving of wins and that's exactly what they did.
Goal chances were at a premium in the first half and the team had to rely on the point scoring of Ryan Gray and Adam Loughran who both slotted over three points a piece.
It was a rare feeling for the corrinshego team to be behind at half time as the they trailed off 2-2 to 0-6 at the break. However after the break and finally plugging the gaps at the back the team responded with true grit and restricted Clady to a measly 1-2 in the second half, while the boys scored 2-2 from play. It was captain Niall McShane getting another goal in successive weeks that eventually brought the team back into the game and Conor Jennings scoring the point of the game after a fine second half from centre half back that sealed the win.
No doubt there are sterner tests ahead but this was an important win and one which will definitely breed confidence for the season ahead. Well done boys!

The Under 16’s got a harsh lesson in their first home game against Belleek Emmetts (Dorsey & Belleek) at St.Pauls school pitch last Thursday night. The game started fairly evenly with both sides exchanging points from frees & play. Lee Courtney was exerting his influence at half forward continually running at their defence winning numerous frees but our shooting let us down on most of these opportunities. With 20 minutes played we had our noses in front 0-04 to 0-03 but the visitors got in for goal from a wayward pass & despite the gallant effort from Ronan McMahon in goals it somehow squeezed into the corner. We replied immediately with a point from Declan loye but with the half almost up another misdirected pass fell to a Belleek man who left it 2-04 to 0-05 in their favour at the break.
We immediately reduced the deficit from a point from Lee Courtney on the restart. The lads battled hard to get a foothold in the game with both sides going hard at it but we couldn’t translate the possession to scores with numerous wides whereas the visitors keep the scoreboard ticking keeping their 2 goal cushion intact. The visitors finished the game with 2 further majors both coming from defensive mistakes as we pushed hard going forward but on the night we can have no complaints as the Belleek Emmetts side were worthy winners. Lee Courtney & Declan Loye were outstanding for Thomas Davis with Keyonis Crozier putting in a decent shift but it wasn’t definitely an off night for the majority off the team. With a few lads to come back to the squad next week we know we can do a lot better in the championship next week

Monday night saw the minor team playing their first fixture at home. Played in blustery conditions in Whitecross the lads took on the unbeaten Ballymacnab team. The lads started the quicker playing with a strong wind the first two points coming from Phelim Finnegan, this was quickly followed up with a point from Charlie Magill followed by two brilliant long range points from midfielder Jordan King. Ballymacnab scored their first two points of the game from two free kicks but the boys were on top all over the field with Ballymacnab playing a long ball game into a big physical number 14. Some super play from from the half backs linking with the midfielders set up another few points from the boot of Sean Thompson, Phelim Finnegan and the speedy Jordan King to leave the boys in front by 7 points then a quick ball into Decky Loye who lost his marker was unlucky hitting the post with his low shot to the corner. Halftime score 0-10 till 0-3.
With the wind at Ballymacnabs back the second half was always going to be backs against the wall and had the boys registered enough scores in the first half. The away team started the quicker with two points within the first 3 mins of play this was quickly followed by a 45 which took a deflection leaving goalkeeper David Hankin with no chance this was a big blow to the lads conceding 1-2 within five mins of the restart. With all the momentum with the visitors it was great defensive displays from Deaglen Jennings, Jammie Fields and Callan Connelly to stop the visitors scoring for the next ten mins. It took until 15 mins into the second half until we scored our first point coming from the boot of Charlie Magill, this gave the lads a timely boost and another one from Phelim Finnegan ( six points on the night ) to halt Ballymacnabs surge.Once again the away team started to get on top as the lads struggled to retain possession. With 10 mins to go a point from Mark McAteer and Decky Loye left us four in front with Ballymacnab giving everything, with a few frees the scores were level for the first time and time was up score at the final whistle 0-14 1-11. Despite the conditions some super football was played and a draw was a fair result on the night. Starting his first game Micheal McGrory had a good steady performance Niall Canning and Conor Loye put in solid displays. Next up is an away game tonight against Crossmaglen, come out and give these young lads some support.
Training continuing every Monday 7.30pm at the Club Grounds. New members welcome. Contact Tony Loye 07810883454.

Thomas Davis Corrinshego 0-16 Ponytzpass O’Hanlon’s 1-3
Thomas Davis Corrinshego kept their unbeaten record intact but more importantly had their first win of the year. This was a very comprehensive victory over a team which were unbeaten and were leading the division before the start of play. With a midfield partnership of Ronie O’ Reilly and Ryan Mc Williams Corrinshego were on top at mid field from the start, and in the opening minute Liam Quinn was unlucky not to score. On 3 minutes Ronan O’Reilly scored an inspirational opening score. This was Ronan’s first outing since his long lat-off through injury. On 6 mins, Corrinshego doubled their total when Cathal Trainor scored a good point from out on the right. Aided by a very strong breeze Corrinshego scored again through Steven Trainor , from a pin-point pass from the ever improving Adrian McCourt.. On 19mins the industrious work by the Corrinshego forwards was evident when S. Trainor and Cathal Trainor interchanged with the ball, before releasing A. McCourt to score Corrinshego fourth point of the day to leave the score 0-4 to no score. O’ Hanlon’s responded with a fine point through Sean Mor Morgan to reduce the deficit. On 18mins R. McWilliams scored a point after been set up by Conor Loye. Corrinshego kept pressing and Liam Quinn scored another point after a battling performance by J. Dinsmore sent him clear. Two minutes later on 19mins L. Quinn added to both his and the Thomas Davis’ tally when he converted a 21m free after John McIlroy was hauled down by an O’Hanlon defender. On 23 mins Cathal Trainor kept the score board ticking over with a nice point to leave the score 0-8 to 0-1. Two minutes later L. Quinn pointed a free after he himself had his jersey pulled by O’Hanlon’s number 5 Ronan O’ Cinneide. On 28mins Corrinshego scored their tenth point of the half, through S. Trainor after good work by R. Mcwilliams. Corrinshego finished the half with another point through L.Quinn from a free. Half –time score Thomas Davis Corrinshego 0-11 O’Hanlon’s 0-1
On the resumption Corrinshego replaced R. O’Reilly with D. Lenaghan at midfield and began were they left off. Although playing into a strong wind Corrinshego quickly scored on 32mins from a fisted point from David Murphy after been set up by the lively Deaghlan Jennings who was making his Corrinshego senior debut. O’ Hanlon’s responded with two points to leave the scoreline 0-12 to 0-3 in favour of the men in maroon and white. On 36 mins L. Quinn scored another point. Moments later R. Mc Williams increased the lead further with a long range point. Sean Thompson replaced Stephen Trainor at C.H.F. and James Dinsmore scored another point. O’Hanlon’s kept plugging away and scored a goal to reduce the deficit. Gerry O’Reilly replaced J. McIlroy and Paddy Smith replaced L.Quinn on 52 mins and David Murphy finished the scoring with a pointed free to leave the score 0-16 to 1-3 in favour of Corrinshego. On 56 mins Nathan Burns made his Corrinshego debut when he replaced the injured D. Jennings. There were many positives from this game, especially the work of both R. Mc Loughlin and M. McAteer in defence and the encouraging display from debutant D. Jennings. Next up for Corrinshego is Phelim Brady’s on Friday evening.

Minor Cup Final Win for Newry Thirds!
Newry travelled to Stormont hoping to make it third time lucky as they took on Kilkeel 3rds in the Minor Cup Final. This Mourne Derby was played in great spirit and it turned out to be a pulsating match with plenty of goal mouth action for the spectators to enjoy.
It was Newry who had to weather an early storm as Kilkeel started well but could not find the break through, against the run of play Newry scored first when Lee Ervine plucked an aerial ball from David England out of the air and smashed it past the advancing keeper to make it one nil. Newry’s lead did not last long and Kilkeel were soon level when they scored through a penalty stroke. At half time it was all square.
Kilkeel were the younger of the two sides and their fitness showed at times but they again slipped behind when Scott Blakley popped up to drive the ball home early in the second half. However as with the first goal, their lead did not last long and a great flick from a short corner drew Kilkeel level again. With the game at 2 a piece both sides had chances but it was hard to say which way the game was going to go. From somewhere Newry found a new lease of life and in the last 15 minutes of the game they fired 3 goals. The first came from sub Alex Irwin when he was on hand at the back post to volley home a deflected effort to restore Newry’s lead, soon after David England scored a penalty stroke of his own when the ball was stopped on the line illegally. Newry now had a commanding 2 goal lead with 5 minutes reaming. Kilkeel never gave in and kept pressing forward but they could not force their way into the Newry area as the Belfast Rd men defending for their lives. With the final counter attack of the game Newry had a counter attack and won a short corner, after a bit of a melee in the circle, Jonny McWilliams came out with the ball and superbly slotted home to leave the final score 5-2.
This was a great win and well deserved as Newry took the Minor Cup home after a great season which is not over yet with a playoff match against South Antrim for the league title still to be contested.
Team: P. Elmore, J. Lawson, A. Baird, E. Graham, K. Best, D. England, S. Garvey, D. Lawson, L. Ervine, J. McWilliams, S. Blakley, A. Irwin, A. Foster, M. McCaigue, J. Niblock,

St John Bosco Seniors
Seniors win again – as the Yanks would say that’s 2 for 3 (2 wins 3 games played!)
Naomh Eoin Bosco 1-12 Bredagh 0-4 Having played with a very strong breeze in the first half, things were not looking good for the seniors as they went in at half time only leading by 6 points to 2. However an excellent second half display of hard work, allied to no shortage of good football and excellent defensive play against the wind, yielded a further goal and 6 points and restricted the visitors to 2 points, thus ensuring an 11 point victory and a further move towards the top of the division 2 table. The next 2 games for the seniors are away to Dundrum on Thursday 9th May at 7.30 and home to Glenn on Sunday 12th May....the throw in time for this game is currently 3pm but this will be changed due to the blessing of the graves in Monks Hill....details to follow.

Round 4 - April 24th St. John Bosco v St. Pauls
St. Pauls made the long trek to Newry last Wednesday evening with just the 15 players to take on the Bosco in this round 4 match.
Bosco were without the services of either goalie Seamus Brady or reserve keeper Jack Quinn as both are out due to injury. Devin Quigley stepped into the number 1 berth and this proved to be an inspired decision by the management.
It was St. Pauls who were to dictate the tone of this encounter for the first period and after Bosco squandered possession the visitors slotted over the first point. Bosco remained in a sort of daze for the most of the first half generally slower to the ball, losing the 50/50 opportunities and generally being bossed out of the competition.
St. Pauls slotted over further points and had a goal opportunity denied by Quigley who was excellent both in his reading of the oncoming attacks and his distribution. The Bosco defence were also solid with very good performances from Adam Rowntree, Caoilte Jackson and David Magee but this opening 30 minutes was all about St. Pauls and the half time score stood St. Pauls 0:08 And Bosco 0:03.
After the break, St. Pauls came out at a frantic pace with excellent fielding and pushed their lead on by another two before Bosco finally awakened to the challenge. The midfield duo of Oisin Carnegie and Martin Keenan started to stamp more authority on proceedings and generally Bosco increased the tempo. 5 minutes into the second period and Jordan Pinnington fought hard for possession and laid the ball off to the inward rushing Oisin Carnegie who blasted it to the St. Pauls net.
This was the point where the contest turned. Pinnington was fouled and the resultant free was well placed to Matthew McKevitt who turned quickly and scored an absolute peach of a point while under serious pressure.
Bosco really upped the intensity in the final quarter and a second goal from a long ball to Pinnington should have put this game beyond reach. The visitors would not give up that easy though and in injury time rattled the Bosco net with an unstoppable ball to the bottom corner to leave just one between the sides as the final whistle sounded. This was a thoroughly entertaining game and both sets of players deserve credit, it was Bosco though who were worthy victors for not giving in and grinding this one out.
Final score:
St. John Bosco2:08St. Pauls 1:10
Next game is away to Mayobridge on Thursday 2nd May.

Bosco 10-12 Clann Na Derg 0-03
Bosco under 14 boys scored a comfortable victory against Clann Na Derg on Monday night last. As the scoreline suggests the result was never in doubt. Despite playing into the wind Bosco took the game to their opponents from the off and were soon well ahead with goals from Shealan Fegan, Ruairi Lavery, James Harkin and captain Rory Mc Parland. Indeed such was Bosco's domination in all areas of the game the points had been secured by halftime. Indeed Bosco were able to substitute some of the older players so as to give game time to the younger lads on the squad. No doubt we will have tougher challenges ahead but all in all another good display from the lads. Next up Burren B at Derrylecka on Monday 29th April at 7.00pm

2nd May 2013 Round 5 Mayobridge v St. John Bosco
This was always going to be a tough encounter for the Bosco away to the Bridge and despite making a promising start with a point from Martin Keenan it was the home side that capitalised best.
Some poor passing from the Bosco allowed Mayobridge to rattle the Bosco net after 10 minutes. Indeed it was careless mistakes and a lack of accuracy from Bosco that were to be their downfall this night.
Matthew McKevitt was unlucky not to find the net when his excellent shot skimmed the crossbar for a point. Micheal Dillon also only had the keeper to beat but opted for the point and in fairness Oisin Carnegie who was excellent, was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty after a heavy two man tackle in the large rectangle.
The Bosco lads deserve real credit for their commitment and work rate and there are significant positives that they can draw from this bruising encounter, to tag 1:08 against Mayobridge is a significant statement of future intent.
The large Bosco squad will be working hard to hone their skills and deliver more polished performances in the weeks ahead.
Final score:

BOSCO V BURREN
The Bosco under 12 girls followed up their opening victory with a hard fought win against Burren on Wednesday Night. The full squad of 24 players all played their part in this success. The match was watched by a large number of parents from both teams.
In the first half Nicola Downey continued her excellent form with some brilliant movement and scores. She was well supported by Katie Grant and Kerry Lavery.
The midfield of Aine McCabe and Nicole Cunningham combined well with Aoibheann Quinn and Aime O’Hanlon to set up Nicola for 2 of her 3 goals.
The full back line of Sarah Gorman, Eden Casey and Niamh Burns demonstrated the benefits of also playing camogie with some hard tackling and affective blocking.
In the second half there were great contributions from Chloe Quinn, Aoife Murtagh, Aimee Murtagh and Megan Preece with a great individual point from Sinead Quinn.
The team remains unbeaten and now looks forward to the next league match against Saval on 22nd May
Scorers Nicola Downey (3: 01); Sinead Quinn (0: 01)

St John Bosco GAC U10’s
The U10’s travelled to Warrenpoint on Sunday 5th May to face St Peters. A beautiful Sunday morning and with the Milltown Crossroads pitches in great shape it all helped to ensure a perfect setting for some fantastic football.
With both clubs having sufficient numbers to field two teams there was a feast of football for the spectators and parents who travelled to see the games.
The St John Bosco Gaels were in top form and went ahead by 5 points early on in their game. Wing back Matthew Monroe rampaged along the line and fisted 2 great points early in the game. Joshua Madigan was wonderfully accurate with his left foot and floated over several long range scores. Johnny O’Hanlon was back in the Bosco colours after a lengthy lay off with a broken arm and settled straight back into the forward line beside Paul Flannigan.
The St John Bosco Ógs had a tougher fight on their hands and battled manfully against a stronger St Peters. Ciaran McAlinden, Cillian Quinn, Rory McAleavy and Calim Grey were best for the Bosco side and helped pull the young and a wee bit inexperienced side back into the match and were unlucky to end up losing by three points.

Féile na nGael is set for Warrenpoint this weekend when Cumann Pheadair Naofa as part of their 125 celebrations will host the festival for the first time.
It takes place on Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of May, the highlight being the Parade on Saturday morning from the Marina car park to the assembly point at St. Marks.
The colourful parade will start at 10.30 and will comprise young hurlers, camógs and handballers from all over the County Down, dressed in their various club colours marching behind their club banners and led by Mayobridge band. The parade is always the colourful centre piece of Féile na nGael and in the scenic setting of Warrenpoint it promises to be a spectacle not to be missed with over 600 taking part.
Féile na n Gael was the brainchild of Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Tipperary man Seamus Ryan who together with his County Secretary embarked on an ambitious plan to bring the U-14 Hurling Champions from every county in Ireland together for a festival of hurling and thus on Friday 16th July 1971 Féile na n Gael was born.
Since then it has expanded to embrace Camogie and Handball and includes teams from Birmingham, London and Warickshire to become the Greatest Festival of youth in Ireland and has seen the development of some of the greatest exponents in all three games. In 1993 a young lad travelled from Cavan to Galway to take part in Féile, just a few years later that young man became the world handball champion and today Paul Brady is acknowledged as the greatest handballer of all time. From such little acorns grow.
So then at the conclusion in Warrenpoint teams in Hurling, Camogie and handball and the skills winners in all 3 games will be bound for the All-Ireland Finals in July. But this is not the only function because Féile always was and hopefully always will be a joyful occasion for all our youth and at the same time showcase these three wonderful games.
At last year’s Féile the committee, in an effort to promote interest in the game of handball, erected a portable “one wall” and children were encouraged “to have a go.” Since then there has been an explosion of interest and while there were only two teams last year this year there will for the first time be girls handball as well as the usual boys.
That in turn means that there has to be two venues for the first time ever. Boys will as usual be in Saval where current champions will be joined by Downpatrick, Clonduff and 3 newcomers Ballyvarley, Mayobridge and Warrenpoint. The handball will be on Wed 8th May. The girls will also be on Wednesday night in Clonduff where the hosts will be joined by Downpatrick and Mayobridge. Incidentally it is hoped that the portable wall will be in place in St. Marks throughout Féile so why not come along and “have a go!”
On Friday evening at Pairc Liam O Ír the Primary Schools will play their semi finals and finals in hurling and camogie and there will also be the skills competitions. It should be noted that two years ago Pearce Óg McCrickard of Liatroim won the Down Skills at Castlewellan and went a few weeks later to become the All-Ireland champion with the highest score ever recorded. Friday evening’s programme starts at 5pm with the Primary School skills.
At the conclusion of the Parade on Saturday morning Div. 1 Hurling will take place at Pairc Liam O’ Ír and Div 11 Hurling at Milltown. Both these competitions will for the first time be played on a round robin basis. Meanwhile the Camogie Cup and Shield will be played at St. Marks.
Down GAA are holding an Open Night at Pairc Esler this Friday the 10th of May
It's your chance to meet the players ahead of the upcoming Ulster Championship. The event takes place in Pairc Esler from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.
Down supporters Young and Old will have the opportunity to meet with players; there will be plenty of photo opportunities in what we hope will be a very informal gathering of the Down GAA family.
The organisers are encouraging Clubs to bring along their underage players as on the night we will have various activities for young aspiring Down players to participate in. This is a great opportunity for an Under 10 or Under 12 team to participate in an on field session with many of the Down players, to pit their skills against the County players. There will be Coaching stations in place around the pitch in Pairc Esler where the County players will be demonstrating the finest skills of the game.
Are you up to the Challenge?
Can you outfield Kalum King or Dan Gordan, Can you block the ball better than Aidan Carr, Can you solo the ball as good as Mark Poland, Can you kick off your left and right foot like Donal O Hare, Can you beat Brendan McVeigh or Michael Cunningham from the Penalty Spot, Can you take a penalty like Kevin McKernan, Can you get past Benny McArdle or Dan McCartan as they defend their goals, Can you dispossess Benny Coulter as he heads for Goal?
So many questions but to find out the answers come along and give some of the challenges a go.
These are just some of the opportunities you will have if you come along to Pairc Esler on Friday 10th May- gates open at 7.15pm. There will be GAA Promotional material available on the night for all participants and special Down GAA Prizes to be won.
Put the date in your Diary Friday 10th May Pairc Esler be there and show your support for the boys in Red and Black
St John Bosco Seniors
The seniors defeated Dundrum on Thursday night by 3 points and also won out against local rivals Glenn on Sunday 12th in a closely fought game.
That’s 5 for six for the seniors so far this season!
St John Bosco GAC U16’s
U16 Boys Division 2 All County Football League
11th May 2013 Round 6 St. John Bosco v Saval
If I wrote this report and left out the scores, just noting the levels of possession and courage displayed by the Bosco U16’s the reader would say Bosco won handsomely by 4 or 5 goals or at least points.
That’s not the way this encounter panned out though. A strong and determined Saval side were particularly powerful in midfield and this together with the aid of a stiff breeze secured the first two scores indirectly from frees.
The conditions in the first half undoubtedly made life very difficult for Bosco where they struggled against wind and hail to move the ball up-field. It took almost 15 minutes for Bosco to register a score but Saval benefited from confusion in the Bosco backs and bagged a goal before half time. Bosco responded in kind however notably when they engaged in old fashioned direct football, Jordan Pinnington rattling the Saval net. The score at this stage stood at Saval 1:06 Bosco 1:03.
The weather calmed but the nerves on the SJB sideline did not. To summarise this game, Bosco backs threw everything into defending and delivering possession, but their shooters simply squandered numerous opportunities, missing at least 5 goal chances and numerous opportunities for points in the second half alone.
On a positive note some performances from Bosco were exceptional. Aidan MacNamara gave a fine display of defending, putting his body on the line time after time keeping his marker scoreless again. Joshua Munroe in the half forward berth also demonstrated a passion and energy that is a clear indication of his ability and great potential for the future. David Magee, Keeper Seamus Brady (Capt.) and Daire Rooney also deserve special mention for their work-rate and overall performances.
In summary this was a match the Bosco lost through errant shooting, poor decision making and over-elaboration. If it hadn’t been for the defenders the score line last Saturday would have looked much much worse.
Final score: St. John Bosco 1:07 Saval 1:10
Nest game is against Liatroim away on Thursday 16th May.
St John Bosco GAC U14’s
Bosco 12-18 Baileglas 0-03
As the scoreline suggests this was another easy victory for the Bosco lads. Totally dominant in every sector is the only way to describe this performance. No doubt tougher challenges lay ahead. The boys are gelling well as a team and confidence is growing. Next up, away to Saval on Monday 13th May, throw in 7.30pm.
St John Bosco GAC U10’s
The U10’s were due to travel to Fr Lynch Park in Ballyholland on Sunday 12th but with the recent bad weather the pitch was unplayable. With the 3G pitch at the St Colman’s complex at their disposal meant that the venue could be rearranged to ensure that the game went ahead. Because of the St John Bosco GAC policy of ensuring that their players have access to the best facilities meant that this was possibly the only U10 game in the county that were able to go ahead.
Again with great numbers in the U10 squad – despite several players missing because of having made their First Holy Communion on Saturday the mentors Hugh, Kevin and the two Pauls were able to field two teams against the Harps.
Again great displays from all in the royal and amber especially from the younger members on the St John Bosco Ógs team including Aaron Downey, Dessie McAleavy, Calum Quinn and Cormac White ensured that the teams were able to emerge victorious and build upon their growing season of victories and confidence.
Newry Marathon Fun Run
Sunday 26th May all U8, U10 and U12 players are invited to take part in the Newry City Fun Run starting at 9:30 a.m. on Francis Street and ending up outside newry Credit Union where manager and Bosco mentor Brendan Jackson will ensure a warm welcome for all finishers especially those wearing the royal and amber colours of St John Bosco GAC.
