Newry hosted its second ever National Hurling Blitz recently. The competition grew from the year before to take on board the C level of competition too. Venues used on the day were The Abbey Grammar School, St Colmans College & the county ground itself, Park Esler. In all there were 37 teams in competition on the day representing 3 of the provinces.

The C section of the blitz was held in Park Esler with the U14 & 16 sections played together. In all there was 12 teams operating out of the venue & with the 2 age groups alternating everything ran smoothly. At the end of proceedings Louth were victorious in the U14’s beating Longford in the final 2-6 v 1-0. In the U16 section Longford again reached the final where unfortunately they were again beat only this time by Donegal on a scoreline of 1-5 v 0-2
Abbey Grammar was the setting for the All Ireland U14 B on Saturday with 13 teams, that included Derry, Down, Tyrone and South Ulster, Connaughts Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo and from Leinster Carlow, Kildare, Westmeath, Meath and Wicklow all travelled to Newry to compete in Plate, Shield and Cup competitions.
All teams had at least 2 round matches and this led to the teams being graded into the various competitions at semi final stage. In the plate Carlow met Wicklow with Carlow winning on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-3 as did Roscommon who defeated Donegal 1-6 to 1-2. Carlow went on to win the Plate in a tight game against Roscommon by 5 points on a scoreline of 2-8 to 2-3.
In the Shield semi finals Kildare met South Ulster (an amalgamation of Cavan, Monaghan and Fermanagh) and they caused an upset beating Kildare on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-2. In the other semi final Tyrone were comprehensively beaten by a rampant Westmeath team by 8-2 to 0-4. Westmeath then went on to defeat South Ulster by 6 points to lift the All Ireland U14B Shield on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-4.
In the Cup semi finals Derry impressively beat Mayo by 4-8 to 1-5 and in a close encounter Meath defeated Down to set up the final pairing. In another close encounter Meath were victorious winning the game by a three point margin on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-6
The whole day from start to finish was a great spectacle of hurling with all the u14 teams participating within the full spirit of sportsmanship and with some future senior stars on show.
The U16B competition was played in the famous Violet hill complex belonging to St Colmans. This was a very keenly contested competition with many teams of equal standard battling it out for places in their respective semi finals. Ultimately after 3 rounds of group games in 4 groups we came up with our semi final pairings.
In the plate section Sligo won a pulsating semi final with Donegal on a scoreline of 3-8 v 4-4, while Wicklow had 4 points to spare over Roscommon in the other semi 2-6 v 1-5. Setting up a Sligo v Wicklow final that Sligo controlled from start to finish running out 10 point winners on a 2-10 v 0-6 scoreline.
The shield section saw an all Leinster semi final between Laois & Kildare. Laois were in Newry with their B team as their A team has made that step up to A level in recent years and unfortunately ended up on the losing side to a very talented Kildare team this time however 3-8 v 0-3. In the other semi Meath were to strong for Mayo, running out double scores winners 4-10 v 2-5. The final, played on Park Esler was a very tight affair for the first half with both defences on top, but as the game wore on in the second half Meath were able to pull away to record a 7 point win 3-9 v 2-5
The Cup competition which was the biggest trophy up for grabs on the day had real cut & thrust about it. Both semi finals were keenly contested & both were played at ferocious pace. Derry overcame Westmeath by a single point 2-6 v 1-8 in a game that looked to be heading to extra time & Down defeated Carlow in a bad tempered affair 0-11 v 0-2 setting up an all Ulster final. The final of the 2 neighbours was a real spectacle for the supporters as it turned into a real goal fest with Down eventually coming out on top in the 9 goal thriller 6-9 v 3-5 meaning the Adrian Murray cup resided in the Mourne county for another year.
Special thanks must go to;
All the staff from Down that helped out on the day Linesmen, pitch coordinators etc
To the Ulster council staff, Jimmy Darragh, Micky Glover, Aisling Groogan & recently retired Ronan McWilliams, their ability to run & coordinate was essential in the running of everything.
The referees without whom no game could take place. We may berate them & its something that needs to end because the minute these men say no, we will have no more games.
Courtneys caterers who fed in excess of 1,100 people in one venue over one day.
The venues were top class. Facilities to host an event that size id be amazed if they could be matched
Downs PRO Paul Rooney for the constant updates on twitter & facebook throughout the day.
Downs GDM Conor O Toole that ensured staff & venues etc were sorted particularly during a very busy time with Cul Camps
Diarmuid Cahill the countys IT officer & chairman of the National Feile committee showed exactly why he is held in such high esteem throughout the country. His ability to manipulate fixtures so that everything fitted neatly into the day is something I still can’t understand how he did. To the printed envelopes for the food tickets, everything was done with that little bit of class.
Finally the county Secretary, Sean Og McAteer. Without him this competition, its size & its structure simply would not be possible. From organising first aid, to collecting medals, to running pitches, to getting gaffer tape to cordon off pitches no job is to small. Any advice or help that was ever needed he was always on hand & its easy to see why with a secretary like that pushing hurling in the county that the sport is improving so dramatically.

The annual "Hooley around Cooley" 62k fundraising Cycle for the Craobh Rua Hurling Club Camlocha which takes place on Sunday the 28th of September was recently launched at The Quays Centre in Newry.

Now in its second year, the Cycle commences at the Craobh Rua Clubrooms (on Highstreet Hill, close to Bessbrook Mill Complex & the Community Centre) with registration beginning at 9am and the Cycle start at 10am. The Craobh Rua committee appreciate the continued support of The Quays Newry, Peter Quinn and Euro Services, BCC Camloch and all our local Cycling Clubs and Hurling Club members.
Cookstown 1’s 6-2 Newry 1’s
Newry had a tough opening game in their first season back in the top flight of Ulster hockey for over 15 years. The Belfast Road men travelled to Cookstown in a match they knew would be extremely hard as they made the step up from Senior 1. The match started off as expected with Cookstown having the majority of the possession pinning Newry back in their own half for long periods of time. However it was the away side that drew first blood when veteran David Andrews got on the end of an Andy Gilmer cross and deflected it into the bottom left hand corner. This seemed to wake the home side who got back on level terms with a low shot which returning keeper Francis McGivern could not keep out. Soon after Cookstown made it two as they clinically converted a short corner. Newry got back on level terms when Andrews collected the ball on the right hand side and made his way to the bye line before squaring the ball back for Keith McWilliams who slapped the ball between the keeper’s legs to put the sides on level terms at half time.
Cookstown flew out of the traps in the second half and with only a few minutes played they had restored their lead through another short corner. Cookstown continued to press forward looking for another but it was Newry who came closest next when Adam Foster and Colin McKnight linked well with McKnight firing in from the top of the circle, but Robert Irwin diving in at full stretch at the back post could only get enough on the ball to put it onto the outside of the post. John Taylor had a great chance to put Newry on level terms also but could only drag his shot wide of the right hand post.
With 10 minutes remaining and fitness starting to show Newry found themselves down to nine men for a period and Cookstown took full advantage of this scoring 3 goals in 4 minutes to leave the score 6-2 which gave a false representation of the game flattering the home side.

Newry next take on Kilkeel in the Kirk Cup on Tuesday evening at 8pm.
Newry 1’s 4-3 Kilkeel 1’s (Kirk Cup group game)

Newry hosted local rivals Kilkeel on Tuesday evening in the opening game of the Kirk Cup group stage. The home side started well and looked solid as the opening exchanges were mostly played out in the middle of the park as both teams cancelled each other out.
Kilkeel however drew first blood with Mark Stevenson with the goal for the visitors, as Kilkeel went in at half time one goal to the good. If the first half was tentative with much of the play in the middle third, the second half was the exact opposite. Both teams attacked from the off in what would have been a good game for the spectators. John Taylor got Newry back on level terms with a flick from a short corner, however they were not level for long as Eddie Agnew scored to punish a Newry mistake. Mark Stevenson got Kilkeel’s third and his second of the game, and the visitors could have been forgiven for thinking the game was over with 15 minutes left to play.
Newry’s fight however shown through as they never gave up hope of rescuing something from the match. David England got the home side’s second from another short corner before Andy Gilmer got on the end of a Colin McKnight cross to deflect it in and draw the teams level with only a few minutes remaining. Kilkeel had a chance to win it themselves just before the end but good defending kept them at bay. With time running out Colin McKnight picked up the ball on the right and drove into the circle and played the ball to David Andrews who shot and Andrew Baird was on hand to help the ball over the line for a 4-3 victory.
Team: F. McGivern, D. England, N. McKnight, J. Greer, N. Davenport, C. McKnight, J. Taylor, C. Henning, K. McWilliams, R. Irwin, A. Gilmer, D. Andrews, A. Foster, A. Baird, N. Liggett
Newry’s next game is away to Banbridge in another Kirk Cup group match on Tuesday night at 7.45pm
Newry 1’s 0-4 Instonian’s 1’s
This performance from Newry on Saturday was in stark contrast to their last two performances. The home side looked lethargic from the start of the game but still had their chances to get something from the match. In the end the difference was who was most clinical in the attacking areas. The game started off slow as both team’s tried to sus the each other out. With around 15mins gone Inst’ hit first with a deflected cross beating the Newry keeper. It was soon 2-0 when Inst’ fired how a great low reverse shot from the right hand side of the circle which any keeper would have done well to save. Newry had chances of their own, with Colin McKnight missing a chance from a short corner and a number of goal mouth scrambles which Newry could not make the most off.
At half time it was 2-0 and Newry needed to up their game in order to get anything from it. It was the visitors however who seemed to step up through the gears as they pressed Newry forcing more errors. Andrew Gilmer had a great chance when the ball arrived to him at the back post but his slapped shot was stopped well by the keeper. Newry tried to press forward and managed to win a number of short corner’s but their routines were not coming off as each short corner broke down. Indeed it was from one of these short corner’s that Inst’ broke and get their third with a swift attack putting the game out of reach of the home side. Inst’ still pressed forward and got their forth for a well-deserved victory.

St John Bosco Gaelic For Mothers
St John Bosco Gaelic4Mothers & Others Inaugural Blitz
On a glorious, sunny September Saturday afternoon St John Bosco G4M&Os held their inaugural Blitz in a fun filled Jack Mackin Park.
Teams from Saval, Milford, Bredagh, Wolf Tones and 2 from the host club enjoyed the tropical heat and provided some lovely football for the large crowd that gathered to support the G4M&O initiative.
Irish News Volunteer Club Award Winner 2012

Irish News Special Recognition Award Winners 2011 Irish News Club of the Year Award Winners 2010
With the magnificent Jack Mackin Park divided into 2 pitches each team played each other once in a Round Robin basis and to complete the football the teams split up into 2 sides to play the full length of the Newry pitch.
Bosco coach Mo Rooney praised the visiting teams for their outstanding sportsmanship (or should that be sportswomanship?) throughout the day and thanked the teams for making the event a huge success. Mo continued that the success of the blitz was also down to the effort all his players had made over the previous weeks and stated that just a few days earlier he was informed by Croke Park that the ladies would be playing during Half Time at the All Ireland Ladies Football Final on Sunday 28th September.
The Bosco Ladies have had a fantastic opening year, playing all over Ireland, attending the Ulster Blitz and several other team blitzes along with visiting clubs to play single matches. The All Ireland Final exhibition match is next up and to end of a fantastic year the Ladies will be playing in the National Blitz in Portmarnock on the 18th of October 2014. Finally Mo stated that a trip to New York next October is in its early planning stages and hopes he can take his team to The Big Apple to promote the Gaelic4Mothers&Others initiative.
St John Bosco U14s
In preparation for their recent U14 final in the championship the U14 mentors arranged a training session with the current Armagh under 21 manager and all Ireland medal winner Steven McDonnell.
St John Bosco U12s
The U12s travelled to Rostrevor on Sunday 14th to play in the annual Donard Murphy tournament.
With a full squad the U12s played brilliantly and won all of their group games against Rostrevor, An Riocht and Banbridge. Up against Tullylish in the semi final of the cup they met very tough opposition but eventually came out on top by three points.
The final was a hard well fought game where the lads gave their all but were beaten by the narrowest of margins just 1 point by a very strong Longstone team/
St Bronagh’s organised an excellent tournament and Petit Park was in great shape for the matches. The organizers pulled out all the stops to ensure the games went without a hitch and even introduced new measures to support the referee. In an astonishing experiment black cards were replaced on the day with members of the PSNI placing the offender in temporary ‘custody’ by handcuffing them to the goalposts – a GAA sin bin type of solution. As can be seen from the attached photos St John Bosco players Daniel Preece and Pól Óg McCormack both fell foul of the new rules
St John Bosco U11s
With the U12 and u14 leagues winding up the new U11 and U13 leagues kicked off this week.
The U11’s played An Riocht in Jack Mackin Park on Sunday morning and the ‘new’ players who moved up from U10’s Ciaran McAlinden. Jack McElherron, Daragh Óg McCoy, Marco Cafolla, Johnny O’Hanlo, Joshua Madigan and Cormac Flannigan all acquitted themselves excellently in a tough battle with the lads from the Kingdom.
It was a very high scoring game with both sides recording scores of 6:07 apiece. Scorers for St John Bosco
James Boyle 3:00, Kealon Gormley 1:00, Pól Óg McCormack 1:02, Joshua Madigan 1:01, Cormac Flannigan 0:02, Daniel Preece 0:01 and Ciaran McAlinden 0:01

U-16 Ladies Football
Thomas Davis 0-7 V Saval 3-5 Thursday 25th September

On Thursday evening a large crowd of parents and interested spectators gathered at the Corrinshego pitch for an Under-16 Ladies Football challenge match between Thomas Davis and County Down side Saval. Moreover this was to be the last game to be played on the ‘small field’ as we move over to our new development in early 2015.
From the start it was both competitive and fast-moving with Toni Finnegan playing a stormer at half-back. With Millie Kinney pulling off some great saves and the midfield partnership of Leah Mc Loughlin and Laura Debrowska battling hard at midfield with Leah chipping in with a fine point to leave the scores at 0-1 a piece at half-time. The second half started with Saval on the attack and a blistering shot from the Saval captain was well saved by Millie Kinney. A great ball by Aoife Millar, found Siobhan McKinley who’s effort was unlucky to come off the up-right and lead to a Saval attack which found the Saval full-forward. Unfortunately for Corrinshego she was up-ended and duly scored a fine goal from the penalty spot. To their credit the Newry girls took the game to their more illustrious opponents, with Aoife Millar, Danielle McClorey with 0-4 and a fine point from Nicole McCann . Aime Lee Mc Shane and Lilly Cory battled hard in the full-back line, while in the half-forwards Aine Mc Quillan and Colleen Loye fought for every ball. Although Saval were the better team the final score of 3-5 to 0-7 flattered the ‘visitors’ who have reached the Down County ‘A’ U-16 Final. This was an extremely encouraging display by the Corrinshego girls and their mentors.
When the referee blew the final whistle, it wasn’t just the end of a match or a ladies fixture, but the end of an era. For those in the club with long memories it was nostalgic to think that this was the last football game to be played on this small pitch off the Chancellor’s Road on the edge of West Newry. For people like Teddy Trainor and Liam Mullen who remember fundraising and purchasing the field, Frank Harvey who was the underage mentor for many a long year, to all the underage coaches, players, mentors and parents, this was the small field which played host to our underage fixtures from 1982 to the present day, from Culloville and Crossmaglen in the south to the Lurgan Clubs in the north, the small Corrinshego field played host to many memorable battles, some lost and some won, but When Chairman Anthony Havern turned off the floodlights last Thursday evening that era will be confined to the history book as we embark on our new exciting challenge of a new full-sized field of our own. We will never forget the small Corrinshego field, especially when we had to retrieve the ball from the back ditch, but in reality we are growing as a club, we are expanding and the small field doesn’t meet the requirements of either a 21st Century sports facility or for our ever-expanding underage teams and players. Caithfear slán a fhágáil ag an sheanpháirc ar an chrosbhealaí agus ar aghaidh le chéile chuig an chéad chéim eile sa stair an chumann s’againne.
