On Friday night past our seniors travelled to Pearse Ogs where they fought hard to come home with a victory. The first half seen the boys down 1-10 to 0-4 but they came back in the second half to win 1-16 to 1-11. Well done to all the boys. Great win.

Thomas Davis v Newtown Emmett's
4 - 8 v. 9 – 4
Thomas Davis finally met Newtown Emmett's in this rearranged fixture and for 25 mins the young players of Thomas Davis more than matched their opponents. The first half for instance saw Thomas Davis go ahead twice but Newtown came back at them time and again.
The young Thomas Davis team have found the going tough this season but they never looked like they were struggling in this first half, even though they went two points down, they showed skill in abundance as they attempted time after time to open up the Newtown defence. The only negative was that they kicked countless wides, until their determination paid off and two fine goals from Junior Marron put the home side ahead. Captain Ronan Casey had an outstanding first half and led by example, scoring three well taken points. It was forward Christopher O'Hare who stood out up front in the first half, scoring two points and narrowly missing a goal chance, but the home side were missing quite a few players this day, especially at the back and that came back to haunt them, as Newtown scored too many goals and by half time the score was, 5-3 to 4-4 in Newtown's favour.
The second half was much the same story, especially at the back, as the away side unfortunately scored another 4 goals, as they had quite a few goal chances. The only Thomas Davis players to make scores for the home side were captain Ronan Casey and again Junior Marron, who scored 2 points apiece. This game however gave a lot of the panel a full game and they will hope that the return of the rest of their panel will see them get a better result in Saturday's game.
Line up was as follows:
Bradley Murray, Jarlath Jennings, Ronan Casey, Niall Taggart, Ethan Casey, Junior Marron, Caolan Mallon, Jordan Lennon, Sean Dowdall and Christopher O'Hare.

James McCartan, Manager of the Down Senior Football team has stepped down after five years at the helm including an All Ireland Final clash against Cork in 2010 which was lost by the narrowest of margins 0:15 to 0:16!

In a statement James said "I have informed the officers of Down GAA County Board of my decision to step down as manager of the county senior football team. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to hold this position since my appointment in 2009, just as it was to represent my county on the field of play.
"It was my intention to do my very best in trying to bring Down back to the top and while we did not achieve the titles and silverware that we craved, it was not for the want of trying. We came very close to claiming the greatest prize in 2010 and there were plenty of good days. It was important for me to have a Down team playing regularly in Croke Park and 2014 was the only year of the five in which this didn’t happen.
"I have enjoyed the challenge. But it is time for a new voice and I wish the next manager well. He and the players who wear the red and black will always have my support.

"I wish to thank all those who featured in the Down jersey during the past five seasons and those great people who were part of the management and backroom team. They made my job much easier and all the more worthwhile.
He concluded "I also want to thank the county board who gave me the honour of managing the county side and were always supportive and courteous. The same applies to the clubs of the county and to Down supporters and all who followed us up and down the country over those five years. Finally, I wish to thank my family who have been patient and encouraging.
Seamus Walsh, Chairman, Down County Board said "James McCartan gave as much in management as he did as a player. His dedication over the past five years was outstanding. He led from the front and in doing so, brought his team and the county back to an All-Ireland final when few expected it. He had an excellent working relationship with the team and the county officers and I want to extend my gratitude for what he has done and how he has performed as a manager and as an ambassador of the County."
Margaret McCann-Trainor says ‘she can’t wait’ to participate in the second Newry City Triathlon on Sunday, August 31.
Along with her husband Aidan, the 47-year-old mother of two (Brian and Aveen) is eagerly anticipating taking part in the sprint event – a 750-metre swim in the Albert Basin, a 20-kilometre bike ride on Warrenpoint Road and an around-the-city five-kilometre run.

The Dublin Road lady marshalled at last year’s race and said: “It was a fantastic event from a spectator’s point of view, especially at the transition area where you could see everything - the swimming, cycling and running. I imagine it will be even better from a competitor’s viewpoint”, said the lady known to all her friends as Maggie.
Margaret is a triathlon newcomer but already is in love with the sport. She said: “After doing a Try-A-Tri last year, my ambition this year was to complete Camlough’s Crooked Lake race. “I was so nervous in the week leading up to the event, especially about mixing it in the traditional ‘washing machine’ effect at the start of the swi, but I just waited a few seconds, let the others go and after that my nerves left me. Then I was fine, and really enjoyed the craic.”
Maggie is a new-age triathlete. Formerly triathletes could be distinguished by their contorted faces and laboured breathing as they fought for every precious second. But not Margaret. Along with her team of novice triathletes, The Rubber Duckies, that includes Judith Spence, Michaela McKeever, Ciara Phillips, Ciara Havern, Patricia McKevitt, Aine Fegan, Barry Clarke, Gerard English and Sean Quinn, it’s all about finishing – and the craic. In the fourth discipline the Duckies are virtually unbeatable. They party like it’s going out of fashion.
Even at training sessions, it’s all about the craic. After the hard yards in the lake, bike or run, it’s time to get out the coffee and goodies. The Duckies can be seen most week day evenings on the banks of Camlough Lake tucking into buns and cake - and they’ve even been known to polish off a bottle or two of wine!
Six years ago Maggie joined the Newry City Runners and since then she has completed eight marathons, Berlin (four times), London (three times) and Dublin. But with a foot injury that has just refused to clear up, she began looking for a new challenge. Triathlon was the answer but she could scarcely swim a length of Newry Pool.
However, after attending Newry Triathlon Club sessions each Thursday evening for the past couple of years, under the tutelage of David Burke and Milo McCourt, her stroke has improved no end and she now confidently plunges into both Camlough Lake and the sea at Warrenpoint.
Maggie has also taken a liking to the bike and she says: “I really enjoy cycling.”
So in the Newry City Triathlon on August 31, Maggie McCann-Trainor might not be the first to break the tape at the finish, but soon after she crosses that line she’ll be a smiling ring-leader at the post race celebrations.
The very first Willie Maley Soccer Tournament was won at the weekend by Windmill Stars in a clash that went all the way to extra time with Newington FC. Final Score Windmill Stars 3 Newington 2
Speaking at the event Mayor Daire Hughes said "It gives me great pleasure to present the Willie Maley Perpetual Cup at the inaugural year of this event to the winning team of the tournament. .
"I would also wish to put on record my sincere thanks to all the teams who supported the event, Lurgan Celtic FC (No 1), Bessbrook Utd FC, Windmill Stars FC, Killeavy Utd FC, Newry Celtic FC, Ballybot FC, Newington FC and Keady FC. I understand that the local team Ballybot FC in particular put up a valiant display beaten only in penalties by Lurgan Cetlic FC. I would also want to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our voluntary partners in this sporting event, Newry Celtic FC and I hope that the Willie Maley Perpetual Cup grows in its size over the coming years. I would also commend Newry Celtic FC for collecting on a nightly basis for the worthy cause of Newry Gateway Club.
"From my own perspective I would wish to commend my colleagues Newry Town Councillors for supporting this even and ensuring the resources required were included in this year’s rates estimates. I would also wish to thank the relevant Council Offices including Mr Dermot Russell and his team, Mr Paddy Duffy, Events Officer and essential administrative support from Ms Rita Lewis and Ms Tracie McLoughlin.
"I would also wish to acknowledge the input from other Council Departments in particular the Council’s Maintenance Department and the work undertaken by Connor Haughey and his workers in the pitch preparation and setting up on a nightly basis.
"The success of this type of tournament is all about collaborations and in addition to the voluntary input from Newry Celtic FC, I would wish to thank the proprietors and management of Nan Rices; Mr Ros McArdle and Mr Pauric McArdle for providing the entertainment and hospitality over the week.
In conclusion the Mayor added "I hope this tournament raises the profile of the legacy of Willie Maley in the city of Newry and that this can be a catalyst which will lead to the provision of a suitable statue or memorial to the memory of Willie Maley. Again congratulations to you Chairman of Newry Celtic FC for working with my Council in this Soccer Tournament and I wish you every success in the future."
Organisers of the firmus energy Newry City Triathlon 2014 recently started a series of weekly practice swims in the Newry Canal to help participants prepare for this gruelling aspect of the Triathlon. Every Thursday evening those hoping to take part in the race will have the opportunity to acclimatise themselves to swimming in open-water.

This is all in preparation for the upcoming firmus energy triathlon which will take place on Sunday the 31 August. It is expected that more than 500 people from across UK, Ireland and further afield, will line up to take part in the challenge which will comprise of a 750m open water swim in Newry Canal, followed by a 20km closed road cycle, culminating in a 5km flat run that takes in key attractions around the City.
Angeline Sloan from firmus energy, lead sponsor of the Triathlon, commented: “We are delighted to support this event helping to ‘power local talent’. Each discipline of a Triathlon has its own challenges but certainly swimming in waters which are new to you can be particularly difficult and this is the one aspect of triathlon that manycompetitors are most apprehensive about. These practice sessions will give participants the advantage of getting used to the temperature and current of the Canal in advance of the event.
“Sunday 31 August will be the culmination of lots of hard work and training for those taking part in the Triathlon who have pounded the pavements, cycled the streets and donned their wetsuits and goggles in preparation for this day. It is also a key event in the city’s calendar and part of Newry’s Festival of Water which is sure to be a day of great celebration.”
Paddy Duffy from Newry and Mourne District Council, commented: “This is the second year running that the City has hosted an exciting Festival of Water with a Triathlon following the fun. We are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of people to the City. I the morning of the 31 August, community groups will be taking part in a variety of activities including time-trialled canoe and kayak races. There will also be the opportunity for people to have a go on rib boat rides up and down the canal and there will be a 35ft climbing wall on the Quay to challenge those with a head for heights.”
Angeline added: “firmus energy was recently involved in the successful City of Derry Triathlon and we are looking forward to another great sporting event here! Triathlons are a fun way of bringing swimming, cycling and running to new audiences as well as showcasing the best that a City has to offer.
“The good news is that there is still a chance to take part in the Triathlon. The practice swims will take place every Thursday from 7pm with those taking part meeting at the Albert Basin. There are some places still available so snap them up while you can! To register for the Triathlon, visit www.firmusenergynewrycitytriathlon.com.”

Unfortunately this week was not a good week for our Senior Panel as they were defeated on Friday evening playing away from home against Ballyhagen and then again on Sunday playing at home against Keady.
This was two defeats in a row but overall our Senior Players have had a good year. Training hard every week and some our players took time out on Saturday morning for a cool down between games.

Dromintee 3-5
Tomas Davis 0-12
The lads done the club proud this week. 15 of our lads showed up to Dromintee to give their best performance of the season so far. We got off to a poor start by conceding a goal and 3 points but the lads replied back with some neat long range points and accurate free taking from Ronan Casey. The defence tightened up well to stop any further scores from Dromintee especially Jarlath Jennings putting his body on the line to block the ball. Along with Conor Cinnamond , Ethan Casey and Jordan Lennon with some excellent tackling.
HT score 1-3 to 0-5
The second half showed major improvement with Jamie Gaskins direct running with the ball and taking his score got the game level. Dromintee up their game to get 2 goals. But we responded well with more long points from Ryan Owens and more good free taking from Ronan Casey. Luck didn't go our way after a ball came off the post and rebounded past a number of bodies away for a goal kick. But the lads did not drop their heads, pushed themselves up until the final whistle and gave 100%.
Well done to all involved Player of the week is Jordan Lennon
Thomas Davis GFC v Whitecross
Our U12 team suffered a defeat at home to Whitecross.
We started the first half poorly conceding 2 early goals. Ryan Owens and Jamie Gaskin got us on the scoreboard with 2 points each from play. Whitecross stepped up a gear and added another goal and nine points to their tally to hold a convincing lead at half time. The lads upped their game in the second half and Jamie got us off to a good start by scoring a great goal, we remained on top for most of the second half with more accurate free taking from Ronan Casey. We were awarded a penalty and corrinshego born and bred Jarlath Jennings stepped up to the mark to blast it in the back of the net along with 2 points from play.
The lads put in a great effort and after a poor first half fought hard to try and get back into the game but it was too little too late in the end.
Full time score TDC 2-12 Whitecross 3-12
Well done to all involved. Player of the week Ryan Owens

Armagh Co. Junior Championship First Round
Friday 1st August 2014
Pearse Ogs 1-9 Thomas Davis Corrinshego 2-6
Thomas Davis travelled to the Keeley Park Silverbridge on Friday with a much depleted squad due to both mounting injuries and holiday/work commitments, however the team which represented the club gave a spirited and determined display over the hour. With Gerald O’Reilly manning the square it was the simple strategy up using Gerald as a target and within 4minutes this simple tactical plan paid off when Jordan King blasted to the net from a G. O’Reilly knockdown.
Some four minutes later former Irish league soccer player Shea Campbell responded for the Ogs with a fine point. On 10mins P. Finnegan pointed from a free to extend the lead. With both Junior Championship debutants Lee Courtney and Brendan McKinley winning a lot of ball it was only a matter of time before Corrinshego scored again and on 14mins D. Murphy scored a goal from a G. O’Reilly lob. Pearse Og’s responded with two points through Declan Mc Auley , who actually played half-back when the Og’s last won the senior championship. On 21mins D. Murphy scored another point for the Newry men after been set up by B. McKinley to lead 2-2 to 0-3. However , the Og’s responded with a well taken goal.
On 24mins G. O’Reilly was hauled down when in position of the ball and Phelim Finnegan pointed the resultant free. Moments later Gerald again was fouled and referee Paul Boylan awarded another free which P. Finnegan pointed to extend the lead 2-4 to 1-3. The Og’s to their credit battled away and added two pointed frees to leave two points between the sides at half-time.
On the resumption, Thomas Davis playing into a slight breeze and ‘up-hill’ scored within 30seconds of the restart with a point through the boot of Danny Cinnamond. The men from Armagh City kept plugging away and scored 0-3 in a five minute spell to take a one point lead. With both Mark and John Bradshaw battling hard in defence and D. Lenaghan and B. McKinley at midfield, Jordan King scored a fantastic point from out on the right which appeared to be the winner. To their credit the Og’s responded immediately and on the stroke of full time pointed a 21m free to level the game. A draw was probably a deserved result for both sides.
It has been announced that the replay will take place next Sunday at 6pm in Silverbridge, with V. O’ Neill as referee.
Thomas Davis: K. Kimmins , J. Bradshaw, M. Bradshaw, D. Jennings(C. Trainor), L. Courtney, J. Dinsmore, T. Kane, B. McKinley, D. Lenaghan, D. Murphy( L. Quinn), P. Finnegan, P.Heatley, J. King, G. O’Reilly, D. Cinnamond. Subs: N. Burns, N. Markey, P. Smith, D. Hankin, C. Hanratty, A. McCourt, R. O’Reilly
Scorers: J. King 1-1, D. Murphy 1-1, P.Finnegan 0-3, D. Cinnamond 0-1
Referee: P. Boylan.
Under 16 Girls / Peil na mBan Faoi 16
The u16 girls travelled to Mullabrack on Thursday night to them on in the semi-final of the championship. This was always going to be an uphill task, and so it proved as Mullabrack ran out comfortable winners. There was no lack of effort from the Corrinshego ladies who contested every ball and made their opposition work hard for their win. There were some great performances especially from Leah McLoughlin and Nicole Mc Cann who worked tirelessly along with Danielle McClorey. Millie Kinney was solid in nets as usual and special mention must go to Aimeelee Mc Shane who had an outstanding game but it was Toni Finnegan who just takes the plaudits and earned her herself "player of the week" with her best performance of the season so far.

Brendan Campbell can certainly lay claim to being one of Newry’s original triathletes!
Over 30 years ago (June 1, 1983), the then 25-year-old Campbell took part in an event called the Newry and Mourne Triathlon, organised by Pauline Lamph from Newry and Mourne District Council. The sport was so new that only four other events of this nature had been held in Great Britain.

On a wet Wednesday evening the competitors ran 5.5 miles up the Camlough Road, swam 40 lengths of Newry Pool before finishing with a 12-mile cycle to Warrenpoint and back.
Brendan Campbell finished ninth in a field of 55, and third from the locality (John O’Hanlon and Dessie McParland were ahead of him), thus he qualified for the Newry team in the Ulster Championship that was held a few months later at Craigavon.
Since those halcyon days Brendan, married to Breige with five children, Emma, Aidan, Eugene, Adele and Brendan, has packed a lot into his sporting life. The so-determined and speedy athlete has run a 2.38 marathon, completed the Zurich Ironman and finished tenth in the Irish half-Ironman Championship in Sligo, a competition that in the eighties was the top race in the triathlon calendar.
But in recent years, although he has continued running, triathlon took a back seat. And indeed he was only persuaded to return to the three-discipline sport last year when Paul McCann invited Brendan, and others who participated in the First Newry Triathlon, to take part in the inaugural Newry City race.
And he really enjoyed it, especially as he was competing against many of his old friends, Brendan O’Hagan, Tony Bagnall, John O’Hanlon and Martin Patterson, but more especially against his son Aidan. In the battle of the Campbells, 56-year-old Brendan did brilliantly to clock 1.18 (66th place) but lost out to Aidan who was three minutes quicker.
Brendan says: “In triathlon I have cemented relationships that have lasted decades. And some of those older athletes are amazing: Brendan O’Hagan recently ran 95 miles to complete the Highland Way ultra marathon, Kookie O’Hagan is a top national athletics’ coach while Sean Hughes has finished 10 Ironman races. I think age is irrelevant.”
Brendan says the changes in triathlon are astonishing. “The technology of the wetsuits makes swimming a lot easier, and the present day bikes with tri-bars have brought cycling to a totally different level.”
He cites his marathon pb of 2.38 and his tenth place in Sligo as the highlights of his sporting career.
But it wasn’t all sunshine. The year after he made the top ten in the Irish Championship his very ordinary bike was in the front row at Rosses Point, Sligo, sitting out like a sore thumb against the gleaming high-tech machines belonging the best triathletes in the nation. But that day he blew up on the cycle leg going through Bundoran.
“It was the low spot in my career,” says Campbell, “I was totally knackered and I’ll never forget a wee, old man on his way to work, with his socks tucked into his trousers and his lunch box strapped to a carrier on the bike, passing me.”
However, Brendan is currently flying on the bike and thus its highly unlikely that another wee working man (with a lunch box) will pass him on Sunday, August 31 in the Firmus Energy Newry City Triathlon.
