Well known gael Joseph Canning from Mountnorris has been most deservedly awarded the title of Honorary Armagh County President, during a recent function at the Athletic Grounds in the city.
Joe has been involved in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Ard Mhacha since the 1960’s when he took up the role of club secretary, a position he held for 12 years in St Killian’s GAC, Whitecross. He held the position of South Board secretary and later was elected as County Board Treasurer for an incredible 20 years.

During his time as Treasurer of the County Board, Joe met many challenges along the way including the difficulties in raising sufficient finance to meet county expenditures. He worked closely with county management teams and was secretary of the Minor Board when Armagh won the 1968 Ulster Minor championship and County Treasurer when Armagh reached the All Ireland final in 1977.

Speaking about Joe, County Chairman Michael Savage said “Joseph Canning has passionately served as a volunteer for our county for many years and I am delighted on behalf of Contae Ard Mhacha to tribute this honour to Joe as our County President.
“Steeped in the GAA for many years having began his service as club secretary and current Club President of his beloved St. Killian’s GAC, Whitecross, Joe is a lifelong volunteer to our association.
“At both club and county he carried out various administrative positions, as well as working alongside and supporting the notable county teams of 1968 and 1977. Throughout this time, Joe was instrumental in supporting the players and management teams.
“Anyone who knows Joe will resonate the genuine, true Armagh Gael who devoted so much of his time and contributed to the development of our county. I want to take this opportunity to thank Joe and his family, and congratulate him as Honorary President of Contae Ard Mhacha.”
Joe was joined on the night by his sister Angela, relations and representatives from St Killian's GAC, Whitecross.
You can hear more about Joe at WWW.GAA.IE where he talks as part of an oral history project.

North Down 1’s 2-3 Newry 1’s
Newry came away with all three points after a hard fought game against North Down on Saturday, this was hot on the heels of a 5-1 victory over Ballynahinch on Monday.
North Down were by far the brighter side in the opening exchanges, however Newry managed to weather this and slowly get themselves into the game. The visitors got on the score sheet first through a penalty flick when a John Taylor effort was blocked on the line by the defenders foot. Colin McKnight stepped up and coolly slotted home.

In the second half North pressed forward looking for the equalizer and were rewarded when they jumped on some sloppy play in the Newry defence to get back to one all. It was end to end after this with both sides looking to press on. Keith Mcwilliams rocketed Newry back in from with a great strike from the left hand side of the circle. However the lead was short lived when John Taylor fouled a North forward in the circle and a penalty stroke was awarded which was dispatched with ease.
During the fourth quarter Newry started to get on top forcing a number of short corners and opportunities. John Taylor fired home a drag flick with 8 minutes remaining to give Newry a 3-2 lead which they held on to until the final whistle and complete a tough victory.

Shinken Shobu Ryu Judo club is hosting a Martial Arts Open Day this Saturday in Warrenpoint.
Building on the success of the members of Shinken Shobu Ryu Judo club in 2019, the club has added two additional martial arts disciplines to their dojo, Karate and Aikido.

Newry Karate Club has had a successful year winning Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in the Wado Kai Championships NI, the all Ireland Karate Championships, the Carlow Wado Championships and the Christoper Nugent Memorial Championships. Thanks to head coach Jackie Donaghey 2020 is going to be a promising year.
Techi Bogyu Ryu Aikido club is also just getting established in Warrenpoint, with it's previous base being in Dundalk. Olegas Gajosinskas sensei teaches a style taught in Lithuania which involves joint locks, throws and the use of weapons. It is a discipline that involves movement and uses an attackers actions to control him or to push him away.

Shinken Shobu Ryu Judo club is preparing for a successful 2020. With an Adaptative Judo competition in February and the Northern Ireland Open and Closed competitions in April and May just to start. It promises to be a busy year.

To get everything off to a great start and give people a chance to sample a different way of getting fit while gaining new skills, confidence and experiences, we are holding a Martial Arts Open Day on Saturday 8th February in Warrenpoint Enterprise Centre from 11am to 1pm.
The session is free of charge and you will get a chance to meet each instructor and to try out a few simple techniques.
Start 2020 with a new perspective and try something slightly different.
