National Hurling Development Manager Visits Craobh Rua
We would like to thank the GAA's National Hurling Development manager Martin Fogarty for taking the time to visit our Club and also St Peters, St Josephs, St Malachys Primary School and St Pauls High School. Martin showed great interest in hearing about the development of hurling and camogie in our schools. His great passion for the game was evident from his chats with the young Hurlers and teachers involved and his accounts of Kilkenny exploits winning all Ireland titles were very well received by all.

Saval Gaels celebrated seventy years of their club at a function in November at the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.

The evening started with Bean an Tí Colleen Lennon welcoming special guests Ulster GAA Secretary Brian McAvoy; Down GAA Chairperson Sean Rooney; and Sean Magone Chairperson of Down Handball.

Based at Nan Sands Park, Saval GAC was founded in 1949. The club boasts impressive football, handball and social facilities, and holds a core position at the heart of its rural community.
Club Chairperson Gerard Quinn commenced the speeches emphasising the promising talent coming through the ranks and how much there is to look forward to in Saval GAC’s future, while the evening closed with Club President Ann Monaghan looking back on Saval’s humble beginnings through the 1950s and 1960s and sharing stories on how far the club has come over the decades.

Guests travelled far and wide to enjoy an evening of reminiscing, celebration and craic. Members past and present were acknowledged for their work in developing the club across Men and Ladies’ Football, Handball, Scór and the development of the facilities that Saval enjoys today.
The attendees were brought back to the early years of the club through stories, photographs and old video footage. Shown on the night were video stories from some current underage members making it clear that the future of Saval is in safe hands.

A spokesperson for the club added "The 70th Celebrations Committee of Edmond Lennon, Emma Westcott, Christopher McConville, Katrina Poland and Gerard McCarthy wish to thank Brendan Digney Photography, the Canal Court Hotel, Lift the Roof, DMC Events and Flip Events for a successful evening."

Sports fans, clubs, sporting bodies and schools throughout NI have been urged to nominate their top sporting stars for 2019 with the launch of the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards in partnership with The Boulevard.
The awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of local sports people from grassroots through to elite sports and the public can nominate in each of the 14 categories by completing and submitting a simple online nomination form at WWW.BELFASTTELEGRAPH.CO.UK Entries close on Monday 2nd December at 12 noon
The gala ceremony attracts some of our most famous and successful sporting heroes and will take place at the newly extended Grand Ballroom suite at Belfast’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday, 20 January 2020. Sports presenter Ruth Gorman will return to co-host with fellow television presenter Claire McCollum.
Backing the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards for a second year is title sponsor, The Boulevard, NI’s premier league outlet shopping complex housing over 50 leading brand name stores including new name Levis.

Chris Nelmes, retail director at The Boulevard said he was thrilled to be once again the lead sponsor of the Sports Awards saying:
“We’re pleased to continue our sponsorship of these awards for the second year in a row. As Northern Ireland’s biggest sports shopping destination, we are really passionate about creating an interest and love of sport from an early age and championing home-grown talent
“Like us, many of our stores themselves support local GAA, rugby and football -especially kid’s teams – so Northern Ireland sport is something we have a huge affinity with and will continue to do so. The best of luck to everyone nominated and we look forward to celebrating their successes.”
Ulster, Ireland and British and Irish Lions rugby legend Rory Best helped launch this year’s Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards at The Boulevard on his return from the Rugby World Cup in Japan. The recently retired icon of Irish rugby won a Special Recognition award at last year’s gala ceremony.
The awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of local sports people from grassroots through to elite sports and the public can nominate in each of the 14 categories by completing and submitting a simple online nomination form at www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk
Belfast Telegraph Group Sports Editor, Jim Gracey explains how to nominate “We’re asking everyone to describe in 250 words or less why your nominated individual or team deserves to win a Belfast Telegraph Sports accolade. As well as their overall sporting achievements we’d like you to consider elements such as; their dedication to training; how they have improved their performances and gone over and above the norm to secure their goals. Also, what is it that makes them a good role model makes them inspirational to other people.”
Entries close Monday 2 December at 12 noon and will be judged later in December by an experienced panel of sporting judges chaired by Jim Gracey.
Jim Gracey continued, “2019 has yet again been an amazing year for local sports people and teams and all around the world our sporting heroes have excelled. It’s important to salute our sports competitors, coaches and unsung heroes and I would really encourage everyone from members of the public to clubs, schools and governing bodies to put forward nominees for consideration from both the grassroots and elite sports sectors. I’m looking forward to a great line-up of nominations.”
In addition to The Boulevard backed top award, the Sports Star of the Year, individual successes will be reflected in the Malcolm Brodie Player of the Year, Sports Person with a Disability and Coach/Manager of the Year. The future of sport will be heralded through the Young Player, Young Team, George Best Breakthrough and Rising Star awards.
Other key awards include Team of the Year, Special Recognition and our Game Changer award. The Local Heroes trophy will be presented to an individual or team who have triumphed at grass roots level, the WJ ‘Paddy’ Patterson award recognises a person’s ‘service to sport’ over a long period of time and a famous face will be installed into the Belfast Telegraph Hall of Fame.

Waterford 1's 3-3 Newry 1's (6-5) Waterford win on penalty run ins
Newry made the long trek to Waterford in their 2nd round Irish Hockey Trophy match against the current holders and left bitterly disappointed after suffering defeat on penalty run ins.
Newry started slowly and before they knew it, were down to 10 men within the first three minutes after John Taylor was sin binned, extraordinarily harsh decision. This was an early hint as to what was to come in the game. Waterford won a number of short corners and finally took advantage as they went one up through a drag flick. Newry battled to get back into the game and came very close before the end of the first quarter through a short corner of their own. Waterford struck the post in the second quarter as decisions continued to go their way.

Newry seemed to wake up in the third quarter as they now were starting to control long periods of the game, however it was the Homeside who struck next from a counter attack and a great finish into the top corner. At two down it looked like the game could be over, however Newry fought on and Keith McWilliams got them back in the game from a short corner, and only five minutes later John Taylor got them back on level terms going into the last quarter. It looked like Newry might pull off a great fight back as they continued to pile on the pressure which seen David England rattle the upright from a reverse stick shot. Again though Waterford hit on the counter to get their third and it looked like that could be it. Keith McWilliams had other ideas though and a great reverse stick finish at the near post made it 3-3 at full time and the game would now be decided by penalty run ins.
After the first round of five run ins the teams again could not be separated with the score again 3-3, it was now sudden death. Josh Porter was playing out of his skin in goals for Newry and was keeping them in the game saving 4 run ins. However he was on the end of a very strange and furstrating decision. After he made contact with the striker, advantage was played, the Waterford player missed his attempted shot and time ran out. However the umpire awarded a penalty stroke even after advantage was played much to the annoyance of all Newry players. A bitter pill to swallow after Newry did so well to fight their way back into the game against all odds.
Team: J Porter, D. England, S. Megaw, J. Greer, C. Henning, J. Taylor, C. McKnight, M. Russell, A. Baird, K. McWilliams, K. Fletcher, N. Davenport, C. Large
