Newry Ladies 1’s 2-6 Portadown Ladies 1’s
Friday 7th February saw Newry Ladies defeated by Portadown 2nds and out of the Ulster plate at Edenvilla. Portadown started off the game at 8.15pm, winning pass back but Newry quickly won back the ball and were in the opposition half in the first ten minutes of the match. However Portadown retaliated and halfway through the first half scored two consecutive goals. Shortly afterwards , Shannen Robinson in left wing picked up the ball for Newry and weaving in and out of the Portadown defense, slapped the ball past the keeper putting Newry on the scoreboard. Newry then were awarded their first corner and Captain Kathryn Baird whallopped the ball into the back of the Portadown net to make it an even two all. However Portadown kept the pressure on the Newry defence and scored a further two goals just before the half time whistle.

By the second half Newry found themselves under immense pressure and 7 minutes into the game Portadown deflected the ball up into the Newry net scoring the fifth goal for their team. Half way through the second half Newry Ladies played some lovely one twos all the way up the pitch but Portadown Ladies brought on fresh legs, strengthening the defence and pushed the game further up into the Newry side forcing them to defend constantly.
In the final minutes time ran out for Newry and as the whistle blew Portadown forwards finished the match with a 6th goal.
Final score Portadown 6 Newry 2
Newry would like to wish Portadown all the best in the next round of the Ulster plate.

Newry 1’s 1-2 Instonians 1’s
Newry hosted league leaders Instonians on Saturday in their first game since their win over South Antrim. The leaders started strongly but were unable to have any telling attempts in the opening exchanges. With 15 minutes gone however they did find the break through with an attack down the left with McGivern managing to save the first attempt then Greer clearing off the line but it was third time lucky as Inst bundled the ball over the line. With 8 minutes left in the first half Inst saw red when Mathew Russell was truck over the head with a stick. Newry pushed forward but could not find an equaliser.
In the Second half Newry started to create more opportunities, McWilliams came within an inch of a Kris Fletcher cross having beaten the the keeper at the front post. John Taylor was next to come close as he broke through the middle and slid the ball past the keeper only to see it rebound off the post. Taylor was again in the middle of the action as he got free in the circle and after his first shot was saved his second attempt was stopped deliberately on the line by an Inst defender, the defender was very fortunate not to have been given his marching orders. Taylor stepped up for the resulting penalty stroke but it was saved by the Inst keeper.
This seemed to affect Newry as they then conceded a second from a short corner with 10 minutes remaining. They did fight back however after the same Inst defender once again stopped the ball on the line with his foot and a Penalty corner was awarded. Colin McKnight slotted home this time but it was too little too late for the home side who will feel hard done by not to have taken something from the game.
Team: McGivern, C. Henning, A. Baird, J.Greer, N.McKnight, J.Taylor, R.Simms, M.Russell, C.McKnight, K.Fletcher, K.McWilliams, K.McCombe, R.Irwin, S.Megaw, P.Gonzalez
Newry 2’s 5-1 Cookstown 3’s
A full strength Newry entertained a strong Cookstown side on Saturday. The home side had a full squad and put the visitors under pressure early on, their pressure paid off as they took the lead after 10 minutes when Alex Irwin was the first to react to a bouncing ball as he volleyed home. Although Newry forced a number of short corners they could not find their way past a resolute defence.
In the second half the home side again started on the front foot, as Irwin got his second of the game after a fast counter down the right hand side. Cookstown did not give up and pulled one back soon after to get themselves back into the game.
Newry forced their third through Simon McCafferty as he blazed past the Cookstown defence to latch onto a Josh Porter pass and slot home. It as soon for with Porter this time turning goal scorer with a tap in at the back post, before David Hogg added the fifth with a trademark strike to round off a resounding victory for Newry.
Team: L.Beck, D.Hogg, J.Lawson, A.Patterson, E.Graham, D.England, J.Porter, J.Boyd, S.Graham, D.Liggett, N.Liggett, A. Irwin, S.McCafferty, J.McWilliams, M.McCullough

Newry AC had athletes out at road, track and Parkrun events this week as well as another mountain training session.
NIA Live Indoor Track Series, Dublin
3 Newry AC athletes travelled on Tuesday evening to Abbottstown for the NIA Live Indoor Meet. With snow blocking the route for the McCauley girls to join, the men were left the responsibility to lead the way.

In the 1,500m races, Gary Crummy still learning the ropes on track running didn’t disappoint. Gary lead the way in his heat to take 1st place in a PB time of 4:20:00. Gary with more technical training will break this 4:20 time over the next few months. John McCaffrey followed in with a time of 4:46:29.
Hughie Mackin raced in the 800m taking a credible time of 2:16:72. Mackin was unhappy to get boxed in during his race so is adamant to rectify this technicality and race a PB back at Abbottstown in a fortnights time.

Castlewellan Parkrun
Sarah Jane Beattie and Chloe O’Hare joined 237 park-runners for the popular Castlewellan Parkrun. On a cold and damp morning, the 2 runners tackled this beautiful course for the first time.
This was Chloe’s first ever Parkrun and Sarah Jane support paced alongside her for the pair to finish in a great time of 24:37. Sarah Jane and Chloe took 6th and 7th female placing and 44th/45th overall.
Raheny 5 Mile Road Race
John McCaffrey headed south on Sunday to compete in the AXA Raheny 5 Mile Road Race.
This was the 35th year of the race of which is one of the top Irish road racing events anticipated each year. Elite athletes from all over Ireland are attracted to this event which hosted nearly 4,600 competitors this year.
John had a good race after the frustration of clearing his way through the obstacles of a crowded start line. He finished with a time of 31:17 and 376th place.
Mountain Trail Training
The usual squad of Newry AC took bravely to the Mournes on Saturday morning for their weekly endurance and navigation tester.
This weekend with poor visibility, cold, wet and windy conditions was definitely a motivation and skill tester.
With heavy snow predicted for the incoming week it will be interesting to see which runners brave the shorts for the next session!
