South Antrim 1’s 1-2 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Lisburn to face South Antrim in their first league game of the New Year after the league split and managed to come away with the spoils after a hard fought victory.
Newry were sluggish to start as South Antrim came out on the front foot and went one up with 10 minutes gone firing a low reverse stick shot in at the front post. This woke the visitors up and they started to get some joy going forward without really causing the South keeper many problems until they won a short corner with 25 minutes gone. Ryan Simms initial drag flick was saved by the keeper, however, Matty Russell was on hand to knock in the rebound. The home side went very close to going back in front from a short corner but Jeremy Greer was on the line to deflect the ball over the bar.

Newry started the second half well in the second half and within two minutes had taken the lead after a slick passing move down the left hand side, which resulted in Colin McKnight, sliding the ball home from close range.
It was soon 3-1 to Newry when Kyle McCombe found the back of the net and the goal being given but after some deliberation the umpires reversed the decision due to an infringement in the build-up to the goal. South Antrim were firing all they could at Newry but the defence held strong and McGivern in nets saving well from a short corner to keep them in front. The match ended 2-1 to Newry.
Team: Mcgivern, C. Henning, R. Simms, J. Greer, A. Baird, R. Irwin, J. Taylor, C. McKnight, N. McKnight, M. Russell, K. McCombe, K. Fletcher, P. Gonzalez
Instonians Ladies 3-0 Newry Ladies
Newry travelled to Shaws Bridge on Friday evening to face Instonians with a depleted squad due to injuries. The home side took advantage of this with some great passing to go two up early on. Newry did fight back forcing a number of short corners but were unable to find the net.
As the game wore on Newry began to fatigue with just the bare 11 players, Instonians were able to swap and keep fresh legs on the pitch. Their third came again through a fine passing move leaving Newry chasing without success. Instonians ran out 3-0 winners.
Team: Lambe, L. Simpson, C. Ferris, V. Lewis, L. Ervine, G. Davidson, R. Greer, K. Baird, S. Rollins, L. Inns, S. Smart

Seven winners of this year’s inaugural NMD Sports Awards in association with SANDSA will be nominated to Sport Northern Ireland’s SportMaker Awards.
The new local awards, established by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council with Sports Association Newry, Down and South Armagh (SANDSA), will recognise the achievements of the sporting community in 13 categories. Seven of the recipients will go on to compete against other district councils in the Sport Northern Ireland SportMaker Awards. These awards will recognise the outstanding contribution of coaches, officials, volunteers and projects over the previous 12 months and the role they play in encouraging people to enjoy, engage and excel in sport.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “While we look forward to recognising all nominees and winners of our local 13 award categories, we are fortunate to be in a position to nominate the winners from seven of our categories to a national level. It is only fitting that our sporting stars are given this opportunity to compete against the best from other district councils.
“We hope that everyone gets behind our fantastic local sports people and takes the opportunity to nominate their favourites for the local awards. The categories that our winners will be competing at in the national level are across a wide range of achievement for 2018, including Young Sport Volunteer of the Year, Sport Volunteer of the Year, Disability Coach of the Year, Young Technical Official and Technical Official of the Year, Young Coach of the Year and Performance Pathway Coach of the Year.”
Antoinette McKeown, Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland said, “We all know that coaches, officials and volunteers play an absolutely vital role in getting people active and supporting them to pursue and achieve their sporting goals. The talent, commitment and passion of our sporting workforce here in Northern Ireland is outstanding, but because their work happens behind the scenes or off the field of play, all too often they go unnoticed.
“That’s why Sport Northern Ireland is so delighted to see Newry, Mourne and Down District Council leading the way with these Sports Awards and expanding the categories, in line with our own SportMaker Awards, to include a greater range of roles within the local sporting workforce. We would encourage all those within the local sporting community to make their nominations, and look forward to seeing many sportmakers from the area recognised and celebrated in the near future.”
The NMD Sports Awards will be held on Thursday 7 March in the Canal Court Hotel & Spa, Newry. Nomination forms are available from the Leisure and Sport Department in Newry Leisure Centre and Down Leisure Centre or available for download at: www.newrymournedown.org/leisure-and-sport
The closing date for entries is Thursday 24 January 2019. Tickets for the event will be available from Friday 8 February.

Saturday 12th January - FPSG Scottish National Indoor Open Championship, Emirates Arena, Glasgow
The highlight of the race week was the annual tour by the Newry AC contingent to attend the FPSG Scottish National Indoor Open Championships at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.
The athletes and supporters travelled over to compete in a variety of events which included Long Jump, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m.
With 800 competitors in the mix, the Newry Athletes were delighted in recording some fantastic PBs and memorable performances.
All ages and levels of athletes are involved in this graded competition and it is an ideal opportunity for groundwork towards the encroaching Ulster and Irish Indoor and Outdoor Track Season. Some top athletes were in attendance at the event such as Jemma Reeves and Elidh Doyle.
Newry AC had a strong group of Junior and Senior athletes competing, some of which were debuting on the track.

Notable performances of the day for the Newry AC squad would go to senior squad members Gary Crummy and Rory Mulvaney and junior squad members Grace Hamilton and David Burns.
Gary Crummy debuted on the track in the 1,500m. Gary with no experience of track tactics took on a strong field and was not daunted by the formalities of the track officials. He lead in the top pack and broke free with another Scottish club runner to fly in second in his heat and also finish 2nd overall in his Band in a fantastic debut time of 4:20:90. With this performance and his spring training plan, a track season of success is on the cards for Gary.
Rory Mulvaney also a senior newbie to the track, took to the 1,500m with ease and powered through the running field with a fantastic sprint finish placing 4th overall in his band in a time of 4:37:79. A time now that Rory will use as a benchmark in the up and coming track season.
Grace Hamilton the youngest of the Junior Squad, took on a tough Band in the 300m. Grace was not affected by the track officialdom or by the fact that she was the youngest runner in her band and took to her race like a pro. With a perfect start she belted with confidence around the track, taking a 4th place in her heat, 15th overall in her Band and a great time of 51:90.
David Burns, the only male junior of the squad had a brilliant day recording 2 personal bests and was well chuffed with his performances. David took on the 800m early in the morning finishing 3rd in his heat and 3rd overall in his Band in a time of 2:32:77. He then after a few hours rest entered the track for the 1,500m and again with modest confidence worked his way around the track to finish 4th in his heat and 9th overall in his group, smashing his PB for a time of 5:34:39.
The competing club athletes would like to thank all the parents who travelled and supported the squad along with Aislinn Crossey, Mark Malone and Head Coach Kookie O’Hagan.
The overall results for all the club athletes of whom all competed fantastically are as follows:
Clodagh Doran 200m - 29:53
Chloe O’Hare 200m - 31:32
Grace Hamilton 300m - 51:90
Joanne McCauley 400m - 70:74 PBi
Joanne McCauley Long Jump - 3:93m
Hughie Mackin 800m - 2:16:24
David Burns 800m - 2:32:77 PB (3rd in Band)
Gary Crummy 1,500m - 4:20:90 PB (2nd in Band)
John McCaffrey 1,500m - 4:40:57 PB
Gavin Crilly 1,500m - 5:04:77
Paul Le Blanc 1,500m - 5:07:61
