This week saw Newry AC athletes covering the disciplines of road and trail racing as well as orienteering and mountain running. Athletes travelled to Belfast, Castlewellan, the Mourne Mountains, Dundalk and the Wicklow Mountains.
QUEENS RUN AROUND THE RIVER 3K AND 5K, BELFAST
On a wet and windy evening, 3 Newry AC athletes competed in the highly anticipated annual Queens Race round the River. This is a very large event of which athletes from all parts of the country and all levels take part, hoping for a race PB. First race of the night was the 3k event of which the Newry athletes competed against a field of 132 runners.. Gary Crummy had a fast and impressive run on a course with uneven surfaces and tight corners to negotiate on the bridges. He took the lead and in his usual calm manner held back a young St. Malachy’s runner to take 1st over the finish line in 9:21. Lee Maginnis took a credible 14th in 10:35 and lifted the 1st veteran placing. Sarah Jane Beattie had a good race and completed the race in 67th place, 3rd in the female open category and a great time of 12:07. Sarah Jane was also pleased as she recorded a course PB.

ST MALACHY’S 5K TRAIL RACE, CASTLEWELLAN
On Thursday evening, Meadow and Joanne McCauley took part in supporting the inaugural St. Malachy’s High School 5k race held in Castlewellan Forest Park. The race was very well supported and was in aid of the St. Malachy's Trocaire Lenten Campaign and also incorporated the NIMRA Junior 2019 selection trials.
Weather conditions were poor with hailstones, heavy rain and cold temperatures greeting the runners. It was a well designed race of which the 5k took in the paths/trails around the lake starting at the main car park and working its way up around the lake, up the side of Slievenaslat and down to the lake shoreline to the thankful sight of the finish line in the main carpark. Ground conditions in sections were very wet and muddy by Slievenalat, just perfect for a proper trail trace and allowing the mix of technical terrain with easier trail to challenge the competitors. The feast of food in the main school afterwards was well received by the cold, wet and hungry runners.
Meadow had a good race against tough competition from the the other NIMRA juniors and Joanne after a year of not competing in trails finally got her track legs muddy and enjoyed the challenge of the hills and poor weather. Due to technical reasons the results were not available at time of going to press.
PATSY KELLY 5K, DUNDALK
On a glorious Saturday evening the weather offered great race conditions to 3 Newry athletes as they took part in the annual Patsy Kelly 5k event in Dundalk. The event attracted a large crowd of athletes from all corners of Ireland and there was a massive field of 770 runners. Such a large field of runners meant big competition so the Newry AC athletes had their work cut out.
Gary Crummy hot off his 3k win at Queens on Wednesday evening started the race with the aim on keeping in with the top pack. Gary did just that and followed in with a 5th position, 16:04 PB, and just 20 seconds off the heels of Gerard Heaney.
Jonny Gregg had a good race and came over the line with 24th position, in a time of 18:08 and lifting 1st MV50 category placing. Lee Maginnis followed his club mate in with 28th position, in a time of 18:17 and finishing with a 10th MV40 category placing.
ORIENTEERING MOURNES AND WICKLOW
Meadow McCauley travelled to Meelmore Lodge on Saturday afternoon for a Colour Series Orienteering Competition held by Lagan Valley Orienteers. The weather conditions were cold but sunny with good visibility. The green course took the competitors from the sheep pen at the Trassey Track over by Lukes Mountain and back around to Meelmore before completing at the stile by the top of the lane leading to Meelmore Lodge. The ground conditions after the week’s rain was exceptionally heavy and boggy in many areas with a few river crossings thrown in. Meadow competed in the Green event of which she lead with strong, fast running in conjunction with good technical navigation. This enabled Meadow to take 1st overall placing in her colour event against strong male/female competition of varying age categories.
On Sunday, Meadow travelled to Stranehely in the Wicklow Mountains to take part in the Leinster Orienteering Championships. Weather conditions were perfect so visibility was good. Terrain to contend with on this course was open mountain bog, boulder fields, heavily forested areas, river crossings as well as steep climb ascents. This was also an Irish squad selection event, putting Meadow under extra pressure to maximise her performance. Meadow did not disappoint and confidently took 1st place in the W16 category with another strong run combined with good technical and navigational choice.
MOUNTAIN TRAINING, MOURNES
The mountain squad took advantage of the good weather and took to the Mournes both on Saturday and Sunday. The specific course for recce was the NIMRA Annalong Horseshoe of which the route from Chimney Rock to Binnian will take much consideration depending on weather and ground conditions on the day. After, the dramas of the Donard Commedagh race the previous week, the squad are ensuring they train not only on their fitness for the ascents and the techniques of the downhill but also for dealing with the navigational challenges that the onset of a white out can bring to a runner.
HILL & DALES SERIES 2019
This Thursday 11th April is the long awaited season opener for the Hill and Dales Series. This will be in Castlewellan Forest Park and a large squad of Newry AC have enrolled. Newry AC have many new faces in this series squad and many age categories being represented. Castlewellan always calls in the largest race number of the series so the Newry AC competitors must ensure they place themselves well at the start line to ensure that they do not get boxed in and pushed down the leaderboard. Good luck to all the squad taking part.
Newry Ladies 8-0 Castlederg Ladies
Newry ran riot on Saturday as their season nears the end, as they thrashed Castlederg 8-0 at home. From the first whistle Newry were dominant and went in front early on as Shannon Robinson reacted first to a rebound after her initial shot from a short corner was saved. 2 goals quickly followed with Caralyn Ferris getting both. The first after rounding the keeper and the second a sweet reverse stick shot into the bottom corner. Just before the break it was 4 with Laverne Inns getting her first from a short corner.
It was a mirror image start in the second half as Robinson again scored from an early short corner to make it five. Captain Kathryn Baird then got in on the act to bag the sixth. Inns got her 2nd of the game when set up by Rachael Greer. Inns completed her hattrick when Baird ran the ball to the baseline before pulling it back for a simple tap in. Derg did not give up and broke forward a number of times however McCullough, Ervine and Simpson at the back kept them out for a clean sheet.
Team: Lambe, E. McCullough, G. Davidsoon, L. Simpson, L. Ervine, R. Greer, K. Baird, R. Murdock, S. Smart, S. Robinson, C. Ferris, V. Lewis
Mossely 4’s 3-3 Newry 2’s
Newry travelled to high flyers Mossely on Saturday in their penultimate game of the season. They started brightly with chances falling to McCafferty and Graham but both failed to convert. Eventually Newry did take the lead though when McCafferty deflected home a shot from Michael McCullough. Simon McCafferty had a golden opportunity to make it two but was wasteful when one on one with the keeper. Mossely equalised through a scrappy short corner after Beck had saved the initial shot. Michael McCullough got Newry’s second after breaking in behind the last defender who missed the ball, McCullough collected it and slotted between the keepers legs.
After the break it was three with Josh Porter continuing his good recent scoring form. Newry now had a commanding lead and should have been able to see out the game, however the homeside had different ideas and scored from another short corner with 15 minutes remaining. They got back on level terms from a penalty stroke to share the spoils in an entertaining three all draw.
Team: Beck, J. Lawson, E. Graham, J. Boyd, A. Baird, C. Henning, K. McWilliams, S. McCafferty, M. McCullough, J. Greer, J. Porter, J. Niblock, S. Graham S. Blakley
Seniors Hurling League Begins
Second of April sees the welcome return of the Armagh Senior Hurling League following an absence of a few years.
Craobh Rua begin our season with a traditional tussle, travelling to Killeavy to play our neighbours.
The senior management and team panel have been working hard together this last number of weeks and months and all involved with Craobh Rua want to take this opportunity to wish them all the best in this years hurling journey, Rua Abu.
Féile Report
A severely depleted Craobh Rua team battled bravely against North Armagh, Derrynoose, Middletown and Killeavy in today’s County Shield Final. It was unfortunate that quite a few of our hurlers at this grade were forced to choose between Féile hurling and Football Féile games as both competitions were organised for the same day. Hopefully this will not happen again.

For the Craobh Rua Féile Team there were some fantastic displays particularly from Ryan Murchan, Cavan Murtagh who scored a great goal against North Armagh, Thomas McCann and the twins Ciaran and Aaron who performed admirably in each game.
Seán Steward gets better with each match while Joe Kenny and Eoin Garvey added experience.
Many thanks to all who helped Craobh Rua on the day and to the organisers. Comhghairdeas to all competition winners.

Portadown 1’s 4-5 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Portadown for their latest Sussex Cup match with a depleted squad, missing four first team regulars. The game started with good pace but was rather scrappy, however Portadown had the best of the opening exchanges scoring early on from a short corner. Newry managed to get back on level terms through a short corner of their own with David England slotting home. The home side then stepped it up and got two quick fire goals to take a commanding lead. Newry tried to get back into the game but they could not turn possession into chances.
In the second half Newry pushed higher to try and get an early goal, however this was leaving gaps at the back and Portadown took advantage to get their forth.
With 20 minutes remaining it looked like the game was over, however Newry had other ideas. Their fight back began with Josh Porter getting Newry’s second, Porters third in two games. Newry’s tails were now up and Keith McWilliams was next on the score sheet with a reverse stick shot. Only three minutes left and Newry were still pushing for it, Fletcher was quicker to react in the box and drew the teams level with a smart finish. In the last attack of the game the visitors pushed for one last opportunity forcing a short corner. The final whistle blew and Newry pulled everyone forward for the corner. The initial shot from England was saved but Fletcher again reacted quickest and some how at full stretch reached behind to swipe the ball towards the net beating the keeper at the near post. An unbelievable fight back from Newry coming from 4-1 down with just twenty minutes remaining in the game.
Team: McGivern, A. Baird, S. Megaw, D. England, C. Henning, M. Russell, N. McKnight, N. Davenport, K. Fletcher, K. McWilliams, J. Porter, J. Greer
Senior Men
Our senior men made the best possible start to the new season with a convincing fourteen-point win over Wolfe Tones, 5 – 14 to 1 – 12.
Played in perfect weather conditions it was a very even opening to the game with both sides level at four points apiece after twenty minutes with the Shane’s scores coming from Paul O’Rourke (2), Greg McCabe and Ryan Quinn. A fantastic long-range effort from Raymie Fitzpatrick gave the Shane’s a narrow advantage and same player followed up almost immediately with another brilliant point to put two between the sides for the first time in the game. A pointed Wolfe Tones free, their third of the half, got them back to within one before a great effort from Paul O’Rourke crept over the keeper’s head to nestle in the back of the net and give his side a four-point advantage. The home team increased this to seven soon after when long ball forward resulted in David McCabe being hauled down in the square and he picked himself up, dusted himself down and fired home the resulting penalty. Ryan Quinn followed this up with a well taken point to see the Shane’s lead by eight going into added time at the end of the opening half before but another pointed free from Wolfe Tones saw them trail by seven at the break.
The away side got the first point of the second-half before great flowing move saw the Shane’s raise their third green flag when second-half substitute Connaire Mackin calmly slotted the ball to the corner of the net. The sides then swapped points with Ryan McCabe popping over for the Shane’s before great work from Greg McCabe saw him find Matthew Girvan who calmly flicked the ball home for the Camlough side’s fourth goal of the contest. A free from Wolfe Tones was quickly cancelled out by another Ryan McCabe effort as the Shane’s led by twelve points and were totally in control of proceedings but three points on the trot from the away side reduced the deficit to nine. The Shane’s upped their game again and Micheál Brady slotted over their tenth point before Connaire Mackin fired home his second and the Shane’s fifth goal of the game to all but seal the win. The Shane’s continued to dominate and three points on the spin from the impressive Paul O’Rourke saw the Shane’s lead by sixteen points with less than five minutes left on the clock. With the game in injury time Wolfe Tones managed to bag themselves a goal but the Shane’s recorded the last score of the contest with Cormac Feely firing over from close range to leave the final score 5 – 14 to 1 – 12.

The lads return to action next Sunday with a tough encounter away to Clan na Gael.
The club would like to thank Mak Formwork for the generous sponsorship of Sunday’s game.
Senior Ladies
Following last week’s win over Forkhill our senior ladies return to league action next Saturday evening, 6th April with a home game against Lisummon.
U14 Boys
A battling performance from our U14 boy’s amalgamation of Patrick Rankin’s on Saturday saw them qualify for the Féile Shield with a six-point win over Silverbridge. The young Rankin’s led by four points in the opening stages of the game but Silverbridge battled their way back into the game and midway the first -half the sides were level pegging. Two points in a row put the Rankin’s back in front but two late points from Silverbridge saw the sides go in level at the break – Patrick Rankin’s 1- 3 Silverbridge 0 – 6.
Three quick fire points from the Rankin’s in the opening minutes of the second-half gave the home side a decent advantage but Silverbridge responded in kind with three of their own to tie the game again. A second Patrick Rankin’s goal put them three to the good again before the sides swapped a point apiece to leave the game in the melting pot going into the closing stages but a late goal sealed the win for the young Rankin’s on a score-line of 3 – 7 to 0 – 10.
The lads now find themselves in the Féile Shield against Loughgilly Gaels with the game scheduled for next Saturday, 6th April at 12 noon in Crossmaglen and we asking everyone to come along and give the lads your support.

NIMRA Donard Comedagh Race
Esther Dickson, Rory Mulvaney, Paul Le Blanc, Keiron Kelly and Ciara Coffey all took on the NIMRA Donard Comedagh race on Saturday. Weather conditions were warm and mild with good visibility on the ascent of Slieve Donard via the Quarry however, changing visibility conditions of the Mournes took its toll on the field of 90 runners as they summited Comedagh! Which started off as a good and easy route to navigate ended in poor visibility and runners losing their bearings. Route choices off Comedagh were varied and many seasoned runners went off course (some veering off in the direction of Tollymore Forest rather than Donard) losing time and placings. There were 8 DNFs. The route for the race was through Donard Forest to Thomas Quarry and then an ascent up to Slieve Donard, from there the runners then had to summit Comedagh and descend down to the familiar Forest Stile for a fast run through Donard Forest to complete in Donard Park.

Esther Dickson had a good run, consistent and confident in her strength and approach. Esther was on a determined role to retain her top placing of the current NIMRA leading lady and she did just that. The club training days in the Mournes have paid dividends and Esther gained ground as she ascended Donard and then Comedagh and took the advantage of the white out conditions to navigate down to the Forest Stile and be 7th fastest runner to check in at that point. Esther then led a fast descent through the forest and hurtled down to cross the finish line 3 seconds ahead of club buddy Rory Mulvaney. She deservedly lifted 1st female (9 minutes ahead of the next female runner, Shileen O'Kane) and 10th overall race position in a time of 1:15.33.
Rory Mulvaney had a consistently strong run gaining 6 places between Donard and the Forest Stile, and being 5th fastest person to check in to the Forest Stile checkpoint after the infamous Comedagh descent. Rory in his descent through the forest was able to gain another place so finished in 11th place in a time of 1:15.36 on the heels of club buddy Esther Dickson.
Paul Le Blanc went from strength to strength as the race progressed and expertly gained placings from a strong ascent of Comedagh and made good navigational decisions to move from 31st place at the Donard Summit to 24th at the Forest Stile off Comedagh. Paul then with a confident descent from the stile was able to overtake more competitors to deservedly finish in 20th place in at time of 1:22.37 and proudly take the 1st MV55 category prize.

Kieron Kelly was 3rd to summit Slieve Donard and 4th onto the Commedagh control point, hot on the heels of Newcastle men Seamus Lynch, Mark Stephens and Zak Hanna but in the white out of Comedagh it all went wrong as he made a frustrating navigational error which cost him valuable time, energy and his top placing. He finished 24th overall in a time of 1:23.07 but still was able to claim 3rd MV45.
Ciara Coffey, in her debut year of mountain running was treated to a baptism of fire and experienced the typical changing mountain conditions that can make or break a mountain runners race. However, Ciara performed great considering the challenging navigational conditions coming off Comedagh. She was consistent in her placings on her ascent to the Quarry, Donard and Comedagh but unfortunately lost a bit of time navigationally coming off Comedagh, but only losing 5 places. At the forest stile Ciara descended hard and fast and completed the race in 57th overall placing in a time of 1:52:10. Ciara completed with her traditional trade mark smile.
Irish Life Health Juvenile Indoor Championships Athlone
Meadow McCauley participated in the All Ireland Indoor Championships in the AIT, Athlone at the week-end.
Meadow took part in a highly competitive U17s 800m race with top Irish names on the start list. Meadow ran well competing in the fastest heat of the race group, but was disappointed to miss out on reaching the final 8. However, the 16 year old was pleased to be able to claim an All-Ireland overall U17s 10th placing. This was the last meet for the indoor season so hard work will now be put into training for the 2019 Outdoor Championships.
Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty MLA has said questions must be asked of the BBC as it pays £173M to take over UKTV from Discovery.
Mr McNulty said, ‘For the past number of years I have been lobbying hard to have improved coverage of Gaelic Games on BBC Television. It has been one of the most frustrating experiences I have been involved in as an elected representative.’

‘Gaelic football is the single biggest sport in Ulster when comparing to soccer, rugby and all the other sports combined and yet the coverage by BBC is abysmal. Those who follow Gaelic games be that football, hurling, camogie or ladies football are television licence payers too and yet we get virtually nothing in return.’
As RTE and SKY Television launch their schedule for 2019 out of all the games in the Championship they are showing only three games between them involving Ulster teams, and BBC are expected to show less. This is not acceptable and it cannot continue. This shouldn’t be about pinning one sport against another, but quite frankly there are larger crowds attending some local parish derbies in our County Championship than some of the games which are aired on BBC Radio Ulster on a Friday evening.
‘To top it all off we are told today that the BBC has paid out £173million to purchase UKTV from Discovery. I would much prefer to see the BBC investing in local sport and covering Gaelic Games across this island. The GAA has done a lot in recent years to reach beyond its traditional catchment and better coverage of our games would act as a great showcase for the sport right across Ulster.’
