Senior Men – Intermediate League Division 2B Champions
Wednesday evening saw our senior men crowned Intermediate League Division 2B champions following a six-point win over Crossmaglen II’s, 1- 13 to 0 – 10. The Shane’s went into the game knowing that if they avoided defeat they would claim the league title without any need for comparing head to head results or any other permutations.
Played in damp weather conditions it was never going to be a free-flowing game and there were almost five minutes on the clock before the first score was registered with Connaire Mackin getting the Shane’s off the mark with Ryan McCabe following up soon after with a well taken point. Two points in as many minutes had Crossmaglen back on level terms before a Paul O’Rourke point nudged the Shane’s back in front but the away side hit another two points to lead by one. Minutes later Neil Paul Lennon raised the green flag when he slotted the ball home from close range and he followed this up almost immediately with a decent point before Paddy Maughan popped the ball over the bar to give the Camlough men a four-point advantage. The sides then swapped points with David McCabe on target for the Shane’s before two late first-half scores from Crossmaglen saw them trail by just two at the break, 1 – 6 to 0 – 7.

The opening exchanges of the second-half were fairly cagey with the sides scoring two points apiece in the first fifteen minutes with Paul O’Rourke getting both the Shane’s scores. The home side still led by two at this stage before two points from the boot of David McCabe kept the score-board ticking over for the Shane’s before Crossmaglen pointed a free to leave just three between the sides. This proved to be their final score of the game as the Shane’s pointed a further three placed balls courtesy of Connaire Mackin, Paul O’Rourke and Kristian Magill to claim the all-important win and ultimately the Intermediate League Division 2B title, on a score-line of 1 – 13 to 0 – 10.
The Shane’s didn’t make the best of the starts to their league campaign this year but as the season moved on they gradually found their rhythm and they went on a great run of form just at the right time to deservedly claim the league title. There were a number of key results throughout league which proved vital but it was their two-point win away Middletown when they were trailing by four with less than ten minutes on the clock which gave the lads the belief and confidence to go on and claim the silverware.
Well done to the management team of Kelly O’Rourke and David Muckian who worked tirelessly throughout the year and guided the lads to the league title. Well done also to all the players for all their hard work and commitment during the season which saw them earn their just rewards on Wednesday night, including all the younger players on the squad who stepped up to the mark at various times throughout the year. A big word of thanks to our ever-reliable club physio Nicola McCabe who had a busy year treating various injuries and knocks and to young Ruairi O’Brien who was ever present at all training sessions and matches making sure that all balls were accounted for, all training gear was present and correct and water was readily available to all players at all times.
The lads will return to training over the next few days as they await the outcome of the upcoming Championship draw.

From Parkrun, Track, Mountains to Road - Newry AC athletes were out this week and producing great results.
Wednesday 1st August - Dublin County Graded Series Track Meet - Morton Stadium, Santry
Meadow and Joanne McCauley travelled to Dublin on Wednesday evening to compete in the final Dublin Country Graded Series Track Meet of the season. They put their trust in the weather man and left the torrential rains in County Armagh and headed for the sunshine of the South. The weather man for once was right and the weather was warm and dry but a very strong negative 2.9 wind was blowing across the track.
Meadow debuted in the 400m, coming in 3rd in her heat with a time of 66:05 and a time to build on. Joanne completed the 400m in 71:07, not a PB but with the wind against in the final 120m, it was a fair result. Joanne also took part in the Long Jump after the 400m of which was a good performance in practice for the Irish Masters Nationals just being 10cm shy of her current PB.

Friday 3rd August - Michael Fearon & Kevin Marron 5k Road Race, Carlingford
Carlingford 5k is a popular race of which attracts runners from all over Ireland. The race is a fast, flat course which starts at the Castle by the Harbour, follows the outer village roads and then returns to finish in the bustling and lively village centre.
With perfect weather conditions, six Newry AC athletes took up the challenge against a top field of 531 runners. First over the line was Mark Malone with a fantastic time of 16:34 and taking a top 30 placing of 26th; Gary Crummy who has only returned to running recently with little training, was the star performer as he impressed the Newry crew and flew in with a time of 17:35; Hughie Mackin followed in with 18:02 and Andrew Knapton was hot on his heels with 18:03; Rory Mulvaney also came in under 19 minutes with a great time of 18:43. All the men came in the top 100 men - impressive with the top quality field of competition. Meadow McCauley came in strongly with a time of 22:32, taking 4th Female Under 17 and finishing in the top 50 women overall.
Great performances from all the Newry AC athletes.
Friday 3rd August - Bessbrook Duathlon
Sarah Jane Beattie on a very warm night attended this local Duathlon of which all proceeds were going to the Special Olympics Ireland World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, it was also in memory of Malachy and Philip Patton.
The event was a 2 mile run then 11 mile cycle and finishing with a 2 mile run. With a challenging route, Sarah Jane went out determined from the start and finished in a time of 1 hour 14 minutes and took 2nd Female in the competition.
Saturday 4th August - Rostrevor Parkrun
4 Newry AC athletes, namely the Patterson crew, took to the trail paths of Kilbroney Forest Park for their weekly Parkrun event. Ethan Patterson completed the run with 2nd place in a time of 20:11; dad, Martin, followed in 12th place with 24:25; Ryan came in 21st with 25:23 and Pierce completed in 23rd place with a time of 26:01.

Saturday 4th August - Seven Sevens, NIMRA Championship Race, Mourne Mountains
3 Brave Newry AC souls took on this annual event, which was the 9th race of the NIMRA Championships. The race is a tough 19 miles with 8,700 feet of ascent and covers the summits of Donard, Comedagh, Lamagan, Binnian, Meelbeg, Meelmore and Bearnagh. The start and finish was held at the Shimna College within the Donard Forest Park and the course took on a clockwise direction this year which meant Slieve Donard was the first mountain to tackle!
The athletes also have to take in set mandatory checkpoints along the route and cut off points too. The weather and visibility was good but very warm for the athletes compared to the atrocious conditions at the Bearnagh race last week.
Keiron Kelly had a brilliant race and finished in a fantastic 4th place, taking 1st MV45 category and a time of 4:23:00; Cathal McGreevy came in 34th with a time of 5:27:44 and Noel Carr followed in with 5:46:05. A tough race of which all athletes must be commended for completing.
Sunday 5th August- Mullaghbawn 10k
John McCaffrey and Ciara Coffey competed in the annual Mullaghbawn 10k. A hilly and challenging course did not deter these two athletes. John finished in 2nd place and Ciara Coffey came in 1st Female. No official times where available.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anam
With the holiday period still in full swing, event attendances were low but the quality was high with Newry AC athletes out competing this week.
Saturday 28th July 2018 - Rossi 5k, Rostrevor
4 Newry AC athletes took part in the Rossi 5k (EJ5K). This is a charity event with proceeds going to Life & Time in memory of Eoin Farrell and James Miskelly.
A day that had a mix of torrential rain and thunderstorms, which thankfully moved away for the early evening race start.
With a competitive field of 165 runners, the Newry AC athletes held their own with some very strong performances taking 2 podiums placings and the men all coming within the top 20.

Under the watchful eye of Coach Kookie O’Hagan, Mark Malone was first home for Newry AC taking a podium 3rd place in a time of 16:42, with only 12 seconds between 1st and 3rd place; Barry Monaghan followed through in 6th place with a time of 17:20; Hughie Mackin placed 16th with a time of 18:35. Ciara Coffey continued her fine collection of podium performances taking 2nd female and 27th overall in a time of 19:29.
Saturday 28th July - NIMRA Bearnagh Race
Noel Carr braved challenging weather conditions on this tough mountain race on Saturday morning.
The summits of Meelbeg, Bearnagh and Meelmore are a challenge in their own right but when weather conditions close in then the bar is raised considerably!
Wind and rain battered the runners and then a thunderstorm was thrown in for extra torment and trauma.
Noel did well and was able to finish the race in 23rd place in a time of 1:06:25. The finish line at Happy Valley was definitely a welcomed sight.
Saturday 28th July 2018 - Rostrevor Parkrun, Kilbroney Forest Park
On a damp morning, the young Patterson athletes were out to take part and support their weekly Parkrun on the undulating trails of Kilbroney Forest Park. The Rostrevor Parkrun is an event which must have one of the most beautiful surroundings and those who have not visited this location must do so at some point in their Parkrun calendar.

Ethan Patterson took back the 1st place crown this week in a time of 20:09, top 3 placings are now a regular spot in the Rostrevor Parkrun for this young and talented Newry AC athlete. Brother Ryan, followed in with 18th position and a time of 25:36.

Saturday 28th July 2018 - Armagh Parkrun, Palace Demense
With damp conditions, mother and daughter team - Joanne and Meadow McCauley, took to the picturesque and hilly setting of Palace Demense for the Armagh Parkrun.
With Meadow just back from 3 weeks in the USA, the young athlete was out to gauge her fitness after a training break. Meadow had no worries on her fitness taking 1st female position and 15th overall in a time of 22:51 as well as taking 9 seconds off for a new course PB. Joanne followed through with 38th place in a time of 27:06.
Senior Men
Our senior men find themselves on the brink of promotion to Intermediate League Division 2A following a brilliant twelve-point win over Clomore on Friday night, 2 – 14 to 1 – 5.
Greg McCabe set the Shane’s on their way in the opening minutes when he rose highest to fist a great ball from his brother Mark to the back of the Clonmore net. The home side replied with two pointed frees before two points apiece from Connaire Mackin and Mark McCabe gave the Camlough men a five-point lead, with Clonmore responding with another point from a placed ball. The Shane’s bossed the rest of the opening half, firing over another four points without reply to lead by eight at the break, 1 – 8 to 0 – 3, the scores coming from David McCabe, Mark McCabe, Neil Paul Lennon and a long range free from Connaire Mackin.

The Shane’s began the second period in similar fashion to end of the first with Connaire Mackin tagging on another pointed free. The Shane’s led by nine at this stage and further points from David McCabe and Connaire Mackin increased their advantage to eleven before Clonmore registered their fourth point of the game, again from a free-kick. The home side were awarded a penalty soon after which they duly converted and added a further point, this time from play, to trail by just six. However, this was as good as it got for Clonmore as the Shane’s upped the tempo again and a great team move ended with Greg McCabe slotting home his second goal of the game. Late points from Ryan Quinn, Paul O’Rourke and Greg McCabe sealed the game for the Shane’s on a very impressive score-line of 2 – 14 to 1 – 5.
Despite scoring 2 – 14, tremendous credit must go to the Shane’s defensive unit who restricted their opponents to just a single point from play, with 1 – 4 of their total coming from placed balls.
Next up for the senior men is their final league game of the year at home to Crossmaglen II’s on Wednesday night and everyone is asked to come along and lend the lads your support.
U12 Girls
Well done once to all our U12 girls on another great result away to Pearse Ógs on Thursday evening in the league. The girls trailed by two points at half-time but they came out in the second-half and showed brilliant fight, heart and determination and eventually pushed on to record a well-deserved win – well done everyone. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7.30pm.

Concerns over coverage and broadcast availability of RTE programmes in the north have been raised at a meeting with the network last week.
Newry and Armagh MLA, Justin McNulty commented “I have had a number of constituents contact me who are frustrated by the lack of GAA coverage in the North. I also raised concerns around connectivity to the RTÉ player which many households cannot access at present.

“The RTÉ representatives were familiar with the issues and gave us assurances that they will continue to pursue the best solutions to ensure those in the North have equal access to the broadcaster."
Mr McNulty added “In addition, I have also sought a meeting with Ofcom and the GAA regarding broadcasting rights to games.”
