Newry 1’s 1-6 Kilkeel 1’s
Newry hosted current league champions and last years treble winners Kilkeel on Saturday and were brought back down to earth with a bang after last weeks good result away to Raphoe as they were knocked for 6.
This was Newrys first home game of the season the first of just two home games in their first 8 fixtures and it could not have started much worse. The home side having taken the push back were immediately put under pressure and gave the ball away in their own half with Kilkeel pouncing straight away going one up in the first 30 seconds of the game.
Newry did fight back and try to get an equaliser when they one a short corner and were awarded a penalty stroke from the resulting attempt, however Colin McKnights penalty attempt was saved well. After this Newry struggled to put Kilkeel under and sustained pressure as the away side stuck again with 25minutes gone with a well placed short corner, and just two minutes later it was three again with another drag flick low into the Newry net.

At half time Kilkeel were three goals to the good and it did not look like Newry could get back into the game.
In the second half Newry did manage to put a better showing winning a number of short corners but Colin McKnight was denied twice by the Kilkeel keeper to keep the score at 3-0. As Newry pressed forward Kilkeel used their pace and hit quickly on the counter winning a short corner and scoring again from another drag flick.
Keith McWilliams did manage to pull one back with a great reverse stick finish from wide left in the circle.
The home side kept pressing and did not seem to learn as they were caught out in the counter with the away side again catching them out and scoring two quick fire go’s L.A. for a resounding victory.
The job doesn’t get any easier as Newry travel to Instonians next Saturday for their third game of the season.
Newry Olympic Hockey Club would like to thank match sponsor EOS IT Solutions.
Team: L. Beck, S. Megaw, C. Henning, N. McKnight, J. Greer, R. Irwin, C. McKnight, N. Davenport, M. Russell, K. McWilliams, K. McCombe, K. Fletcher, A. Baird, R. McGivern
Cookstown 4’s 2-2 Newry 2’s
Newry’s first game of the season was a tough one as they travelled to Cookstown, always a tough place to get a result but they managed to come away with a share of the spoils.
Newry started slowly as they showed signs of rustiness in this first fixture and took a while to get into the game. Cookstown took advantage of this and pounced on a miss placed pass to catch Newry off guard and go one up with 20 minutes gone. However this lead was short lived as Gareth Moffett and Michael McCullough linked up well with a one two before McCullough slotted home to get the game back on level terms. On the stroke of half time Cookstown got back in front with a great solo goal.
In the second half Newry looked the more dangerous side as the surged forward in their search for the equaliser. It took a while but they eventually got their second with the ever running Josh Porter firing home a low reverse stick shot. The visitors continued to create chances but could not get the elusive third goal and had to settle for a draw.
Team: A. Collum, E. Graham, G. McCullough, G. Moffett, A. Marks, M. McCullough, S. Graham, S. McCafferty, P. Moffett, M. McCaigue, S. Blakley, J. Porter
Newry’s next match is home to Bangor on Saturday at 4pm.
Newry Boxer Conor Wallace has won his first professional boxing bout on Saturday in Brisbane, Australia.
Wallace who weighed in at 79.2kg took on Australian opponent Aaron Sesay in light-heavyweight winning the match with a knock out in the second round.

Commenting on Facebook Conor said "Great to get my first professional win last night. Some buzz!! More to come!"
Euroka Promotions signed up Conor on a long term contract in August under the tutelage off Steve Deller from Brisbane’s Fortitude Gym.
Deller said at the time he had not been this excited about a boxer since he signed Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jarrod Fletcher.
Deller said: “The reason I signed Conor to a long-term contract is because I know he will be the light-heavyweight champion of the world.”

Conor gained six Irish titles during his amateur spell. The Newry boxer's next professional bout is scheduled for 10th of November with opponent still to be decided.
Newry 3 Raphoe 2
Newry Men’s firsts kick started their 2018/19 league campaign with a hard fought 2-3 win away vs Raphoe on Saturday.
Having had good pre-season under their belt Newry knew they needed to start well with a victory but it was never going to be easy having to travel to Raphoe, Donegal, in their opening fixture with a depleted squad and reshuffled pack. In came Richard McGivern at left back with Andrew Baird moving into the centre and John Taylor rejoining Newry from Annadale, started in centre midfield. It didn’t take Taylor long to mark his comeback with a goal when he riffled home a drag flick from Newry’s first short corner of the game with ten minutes gone, and only three minutes later after good work from Keith McWilliams and Matthew Russell won another short he made it two firing home another drag flick to the opposite corner.
Newry were now happy to sit back and try to hit on the counter and were within inches of doing so when Jeremy Greer picked out Colin McKnight who had out paced his marker and turned to find Kris Fletcher in the circle, Fletchers first time shot was pushed round the post by the Raphoe keeper, a magnificent save to deny Fletcher.

As half time neared Raphoe pilled on the pressure forcing a number of short corners with Greer clearing off the line at the back post and Lindsay Beck in goals making two great saves.
Raphoe flew out of the traps in the second period, pushing hard to get back into the game, Newry however looked dangerous on the counter attack and it was counter attack which lead to their third with Kyle McCombe being found at the back post, his initial shot was saved but he kept his cool and slotted home the rebound between the keeper and two defenders on the line.
This should have been game over but the Donegal men never gave in and pulled on back with 17 minutes remaining from a short corner after Beck had saved their first attempt but was unable to keep out the rebound. Newry still kept hitting on the counter as their defence held firm, however with legs starting to go Raphoe got their second with seven minutes left, a smart deflected finish from a long ball through the middle.
The Belfast Road men managed to hold out and came away with all three points, a great start to the new season.
Newry host league champions Kilkeel at home next Saturday at 2.30pm. Come along and support the men’s firsts.

Senior Men
Our senior men are through to the Championship quarter-final and game against Clonmore following their narrow one-point win over Grange on Sunday, 0 – 16 to 2 – 9.

A pointed free in the opening minute from Connaire Mackin got the Shanes of to a great start but they were lucky to hold on to their advantage as Grange hit the post in their very first attack. Grange did open their account in the fifth minute with a well taken point and they punished the defence minutes later when they slotted home their first goal of their game before quickly following up with another point to lead by four. The Shanes were playing into a stiff breeze and took until the tenth minute for them to register their second point of the game with Paul O’Rourke getting the score, before the game was held up for almost ten minutes following a nasty head injury to David McCabe which saw the Grange player receive a black card for the challenge. When played resumed two quick-fire Connaire Mackin points, one from free, had the Shanes back within one before his younger brother Ciaran pointed from an almost impossible angle to tie the game. A Paul O’Rourke point then put the Shanes one to the good but a Grange point late into first-half injury time saw the sides go into the break level, Shane O’Neill’s 0 – 6 Grange 1 – 3.
An early second-half point put Grange back in front but three points in as many minutes put the Camlough men two points to the good, the scores coming from Paul O’Rourke, Micheál Brady and Greg McCabe. A pointed free had Grange back to within one and another Grange point soon after saw the teams’ level again before the Shanes hit another three points on the trot thanks to Ciaran Mackin, Connaire Mackin and Conal O’Brien. Grange responded in kind with three points of their own to tie the game once more with a little over five remaining on the clock. Two Paul O’Rourke points from play edged the Shanes in front again and the same player gave his side a three-point lead with a pointed free with the game entering injury time. The Shanes looked to have done enough at this stage to win the game but some poor defending let Grange in for their second three-pointer of the game to level proceedings and looked as if we were heading for extra-time. However, a foul on Paul O’Rourke saw Connaire Mackin slot the resulting free over the bar and ultimately claim the win on a score-line of 0 – 16 to 2 – 9.
Next up is a quarter-final tie against Clonmore with a date, time and venue still to be confirmed.

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies gave an excellent account of themselves in the senior section of the annual All-Ireland 7’s on Saturday in Dublin, making it all the way to the semi-final of the shield competition before losing out to Claregalway.
On arrival they found themselves in a tough group alongside Ballyboden St Enda’s from Dublin, Inch Rovers from Cork, Milltown from Westmeath and Tyrone side Aodh Ruadh. The girls won their first two games defeating Inch Rovers by a point, 3 – 8 to 3 – 7 before a comprehensive win over Aodh Ruadh on a score-line of 6 – 6 to 3 – 4. Next up was a game against also unbeaten Milltown and after a tough encounter the Shane’s lost their first game, 6 – 9 to 5 – 5 and they went into their final group game against Dublin outfit Ballyboden knowing that a win would put them into the shield semi-final. After another close game the Shane’s lost out by two points, 4 – 8 to 4 – 6 but it wasn’t over for the girls as they found themselves in a free-kick shoot-out with Ballyboden and Inch Rovers. Each side had to take five frees from 30m and the Shane’s came out on top, scoring three from five with Tara Byrne slotting over the winning kick. This saw the girls through to the shield semi-final and game against Claregalway but unfortunately this proved to be a game too far for them as they lost out to a very good side. A combination of injuries and the fatigue eventually took its toll on the girls but every one of them gave their all throughout the tournament and certainly did their club and county proud.
The Shane’s squad on the day was Cliodhna Sloan, Emma Kenny, Caroline McMenamin, Hayley Mackin, Ellen Hannaway, Tara Byrne, Blaithin Mackin, Ciara Jones, Moya Feehan, Sorcha McDonnell, Aoibheann Jones and Aimee Mackin. Well done to all the girls and their management team.
Minor Boys
It was disappointment for our minor boys amalgamation of Patrick Rankins on Thursday night, losing out to O’Doirnin Blues in the semi-final of the Division 3 shield.

U10s
Our U10 team attended the County blitz in the Athletic Grounds on Saturday morning and played games against Mullaghbawn, Tullysaran and Granemore. It was a great experience for all the young players getting to play in the County grounds and it proved to be a very enjoyable mornings football for everyone involved. Next Saturday the U10’s head to Mayobridge to take part in their annual tournament.
Youth Meeting
The club is holding a youth meeting on Monday 17th September at 8.00pm to put in place arrangements for underage football in 2019, both boys and girls. We are asking all our club members - past and present, players – past and present and parents of all our underage footballers to get involved with the youth section of the club. The more people we have involved the better it is for everyone, especially the young players. If you feel you would like to become involved in either boys or girls football in any way then come along to the meeting in the club tomorrow night.

Saturday 15th September -Mountain Marathon (MMM) Score Event- Mournes, Co. Down.
Well done to club junior David Burns and dad Charles on completing the 1 day score event at the Mournes Mountain Marathon.
The Score Event has a 6 hour time limit of which competitors (in pairs) must navigate their way through the Mournes checking into as many control points as possible (control points vary in value so a plan of navigation is crucial). This is a physical and mental challenge as the terrain is tough, weather not always kind and map navigation skills are critical.
Saturday & Sunday 15th/16th September- Mourne Mountain Marathon (MMM) 2 Day Event- Mournes, Co. Down.
Newry AC athletes- Noel Carr, Cathal McGreevy, Eamon McConvey and Kevin Murdock all competed in the 2 Day Event. The event which started at Attical GAC covers set control points throughout the Mournes that must be checked in.
The competitors then have to set up camp over night at a set grid reference on their map which was in Happy Valley. After a very blustery and wet night of which proved eventful for some tent tenants, the 2nd day of competition began. Noel, Eamon and Kevin battled round the course and should be proud of their efforts. Unfortunately, the final results were not available at time of writing the report.
Local GAA club Carrickcruppen have received £485 from Danske Bank which will help support the further development of ladies football within the club.

It's part of the bank's Volunteer Grants programme which provides grants to local organisations with which their employees are involved outside of work. Danske Bank employee Dave Scott, a coach with Carrickcruppen’s girls’ U10s football team, applied for the funding.
Rory Coffey, a Youth Coach at Carrickcruppen, said: “We currently have 53 girls enrolled for our U10 team. Our club offers girls the chance to not only develop their sporting abilities but to meet new friends and improve their social skills.
“This additional funding from Danske Bank means we have been able to invest in extra equipment including; new footballs, manequinns and slalom poles. As a result, we’ll be able to further develop players’ agility and teach more than just basic skills.”
Senior Men
Our senior men went into Sunday’s game to home to Forkhill knowing that a win would see them top their championship group and into the quarter-final of the competition, but it wasn’t to be for the Camlough side as Forkhill ran out winners by four points, 1 – 14 to 2 – 7.
Three pointed frees in the opening five minutes got Forkhill off to a good start with Paul O’Rourke replying for the Shane’s, again from a placed ball. The sides then swapped a point apiece with O’Rourke on target on again for the Shane’s before four points on the trot, two from frees, gave Forkhill a commanding six-point advantage. A free from Connaire Mackin and a long-range effort from Greg McCabe reduced the deficit to four and another a point each from both sides, Connaire Mackin on target for the Shane’s, saw Forkhill go into the half-time break four to the good, 0 – 9 to 0 – 5.

Forkhill stretched their lead to five with an early second-half point before a Connaire Mackin penalty following a foul on Mark McCabe got the Shanes back to within two. The teams then exchanged frees with Connaire Mackin on target again for the Camlough side but two points in as many minutes kept the score-board ticking over for Forkhill. A goalkeeping error saw Forkhill register their only goal of the contest but the Shane’s hit back almost immediately with the their second three-pointer of the game when Mark McCabe rose highest to flick the ball to the net. The Shane’s trailed by four at this stage and pointed free from Paul O’Rourke had them back to within three but it was Forkhill who got the final score of the game to win on a score-line of 1 – 14 to 2 – 7.
As a result of Forkhill’s win and other results the Shane’s finished second in their group and will now meet Grange in a championship play-off game, details of which are still to be confirmed.

Saturday 8th September – British/Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships, Wicklow
Meadow McCauley was proud to put on the Northern Ireland colours and represent in the U17s NI Junior Mountain Running Squad on Saturday.
This was for the British/Irish Mountain Running Championships held in Glendalough, Wicklow. With heavy rain in the early hours of the race morning it made the ground conditions that bit more slippery that took a few race casualties. The course was a tight 820ft climb through forest trail into open mountain then a fast technical return descent back to the finish line. The Northern Ireland U17 girls were up against experienced competition from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and were happy with a 4th placing ahead of the Irish Team. Meadow has gained a wealth of experience and great advice from a fantastic NI coaching team which has inspired her to train hard towards the new 2019 mountain season.

Saturday 8th September - Dublin Triathlon
Sarah Jane Beattie travelled to Dublin for a tough and competitive triathlon. She has been training hard all season for this event and was rewarded a time of 1:27:51, overall placing of 279th out of 585, was 62nd female out of a field of 189 and was 9th in her F30-34 Age Category. Well done SJ.
Sunday 9th September – PIPs Hope and Support Annual 5k/10k, Newry

Sunday 9th September – Orienteering in Kilbroney Forest Park

With navigation closely linked to the mountain running scene it is recommended for runners to learn and refresh their map reading and compass work skills. With an Autumn Trophy Orienteering event planned by the accomplished mountain runner and adventure racer, Moire O’Sullivan, taking place in Kilbroney Forest Park on Sunday, club junior David Burns took on the opportunity to enter and was rewarded with taking 1st place in the Orange Category. Good practice for David who will be competing with his dad, Charles, in the Mourne Mountain Marathon next week-end. Meadow McCauley only home from the British/Irish Championships in Wicklow took on the challenging Green Course and lifted First F16 – a practice ahead of her representing for Ireland in the Orienteering Internationals in Scotland at start of October and Northern Ireland in the Regionals in England at the end of September.
