Many thanks to the Council Chairperson and all involved in organising the Seminar.
Senior Men
Following two wins in a row our senior men earned a hard-fought point away to Ballyhegan on Friday night with the game ending all square at eleven points each.
After a cagey opening ten minutes Ballyhegan recorded the first point of the game with Ryan Quinn replying soon after for the Shanes. The sides then swapped points with Kristian Magill on target for the Shanes with a well taken point before Ballyhegan edged ahead with their third point of the half. A David McCabe point tied the game again before two late first-half scores from Kristian Magill and Matthew Girvan gave the Camlough side a two-point advantage at the break, 0 – 5 to 0 – 3.

Both sides recorded early second-half scores with Matthew Girvan registering his second point of the contest for the Shanes but two pointed frees brought Ballyhegan level again before their third point on the trot put them one ahead. A quick free from the very impressive Marc Feehan found Paul O’Rourke in space and the second-half substitute made no mistake and tied the game once more. Ballyhegan replied almost immediately to nudge ahead again but great work from Kristian Magill set up David McCabe to fire over from a tight angle before a point from the hard-working Eamon McCabe gave the Shanes a narrow one-point advantage. Over the next five minutes the sides traded two points each with Paul O’Rourke getting the Shanes scores to keep them one point to the good with the game entering injury time but it was Ballyhegan who registered the final score to leave the game all square at the final whistle, 0 – 11 to 0 – 11.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins made in three consecutive wins last Monday night with great seven-point victory away to Ballyhegan, 1 – 15 to 1 – 8.
U12s
Saturday saw our U12 footballers travel to An Riocht to take part in the first tournament of the year. The first round of games saw the Shanes pitted against teams from Magherafelt, Sarsfields and Creggan and despite missing a number of players they qualified for the shield quarter-final where they came up against Glenravel from Co. Antrim. The young Shanes played some great football and battled hard to secure a semi-final place against our near neighbours Carrickcruppen but despite another good performance they came up just short of progressing to the final. All in all, it was a very enjoyable day out and well done to all involved on reaching the semi-final of their first tournament of the year......onwards and upwards for the rest of the season.

Dublin Athletic Board Graded Track Meet
4 Athletes had a great night of competition at the Dublin Athletic Board Graded Meet held at Tallaght Athletic Club. A good event to compete against the main Dublin Athletic Clubs and one to gauge performance standards. Weather conditions were not favourable with a cold wind blowing and rain. However, John McCaffrey and Hughie Mackin had good runs in the 1,500m and 200m; Meadow McCauley had a good long jump and Joanne McCauley ran consistently in the 200m and jumped to her satisfaction in the long jump. No PBs on the night but a good benchmark for training as the track season progresses.

Aquathlon Series 1
Sarah Jane Beattie completed in the Aquathlon Series 1 which incorporated a 750m Swim in Camlough and 5km in the surrounding area. Sarah Jane braved the cold climate and was rewarded with a 23rd overall placing and a brilliant time of 44:19.
Newry 10k – Ciara takes podium
On a challenging course with a tough head wind to contend with, Ciara Coffey ran a strong 10k race. The course which took the runners 3 loops around Newry proved tough but Ciara was able to maintain her pace and was rewarded with 3rd Female with a time of 40:11 and an overall position of 18th out of a race field of 192.
Slieve Donard Race
The weather was kind to the runners this year for the Slieve Donard Race. This race starts at the Tourist Information Centre in the middle of Newcastle and takes the runners to the summit of Slieve Donard and back down to the finish again at the Tourist Information Centre.

Warren Cartmill who is having a fantastic Hill and Dales Series performance currently did not let Newry AC and ran strong on the technical course to take 22nd overall placing in a race field of 204 with a time of 70:43 and lifting 2nd MV45. Well done Warren.

In the Masters Race, Joanne competed in 80mH and lifted 2nd place and then with the help of her endurance background ran strongly in the 400mH to lift a 1st place.

Also, Meadow McCauley has qualified through to the Schools Ulsters in the Inter Girls 800m and also in the 4x100m Relay. Southern Regional College’s Gaelic football team have won the Ulster Colleges Fr. Sharkey Cup following an enthralling 6-9 to 4-14 win over South West College, Enniskillen at Pearse Óg Park in Armagh.

Just when it looked as if the cup was heading to Fermanagh, SRC scored a goal with virtually the last kick of the game to earn a draw.
Both teams agreed to play extra time. Again it was end to end, with SRC showing extra quality and again finding the net to give them the edge.
This is a tremendous achievement from a group of dedicated and extremely talented young men who have done their college and coaches Stephen Ferris and Rory McGreevy very proud.
St. Paul’s High School Intermediate Netball Team have beaten Glenola Collegiate of Bangor in the NNI Premier 2 Intermediate Netball League Final at the NI Centre of Excellence for Netball.

It's the third time the two teams have met this season, in the league group stages and the NI Cup- making this win all the more pleasing.

Thursday 3rd May - Binnian Hill & Dales Race 4
Newry AC took on the 1.8 mile - 1,800ft - ascent only race up Binnian on Thursday evening. Visibility was poor and weather conditions not great but 231 runners braved the elements and terrain of which included 4 brave Newry AC souls. Ronan Mynes completed the tough race in 29:51 and took 3rd MV45; Rory Mulvaney followed on his tail with 29:56; young club junior David Burns came over the line in a brilliant 38:43 and Coach Kookie O’Hagan crossed the line in 46:58.

Saturday 5th May - NIMRA Annalong Horseshoe Mountain Race
The forecast was for warm and sun with cloud. On the day it was warm and the sun played hide and seek with the mountain mist causing some runners to have unplanned route detours! The course was 13.1 miles, including 1,371m of ascent and including such summits as Binnian, Lamagan, Comedagh and Chimney Rock. Each mountain has its own technical terrain to encounter over and above poor visibility at times. Chimney Rock has its unforgiving heather and hidden holes, Lamagan has the boulder fields and Binnian - well it’s just a challenge of it own! The poor visibility through the course really shook the apple cart causing leading lady Esther Dickson to go off course but she promptly sorted her navigational error and strongly came back to take 3rd Female position in a time of 2:58:05 and an overall position of 33rd. Keiron Kelly ran with the leading pack and this performance was rewarded with a 9th position and 2nd in MV45 category. Paul LeBlanc was not far behind Esther and completed the tough race in 39th position in a time of 3:02:34 and lifted 2nd MV55. Noel Carr finished in 52nd with a time of 3:14:06. Ronan Mynes completed the race in 75th position and a time of 3:33:56, this was Ronan’s second race of the week after racing Binnian on Thursday evening. A big thanks goes out to Coach Kookie O’Hagan and his loyal dog and club mascot ‘Pete’, who trekked out to the Blue Lough to ensure the Newry AC runners had fresh water and energy supplies during their race and supplied great encouragement too.
Saturday 5th May - Setanta Duathlon, Dundalk
Sarah Jane Beattie took on the Setanta Duathlon, Dundalk. The very warm conditions made this tough race even tougher and Sarah Jane competed hard to be rewarded with 1st in her category. Well done Sarah Jane.

Saturday 5th May - Irish Orienteering Championships, Open Mountain Middle Distance, Donegal
Meadow and Joanne McCauley travelled to the mountains in Donegal to compete in the Irish Orienteering Championships. They both successfully completed their mountain courses in the warm but wet under foot conditions. Meadow's hard running and concentration was rewarded with 2nd W16 prize. She may be recruited now to train the rest of the Newry athletes on their navigational awareness!
