Newry 1’s 2 - North Down 1’s 2
Newry hosted North Down on Saturday in their latest league match before a break for the Kirk cup fixtures.
The hosts dominated the opening proceedings and should have been well ahead with 20 minutes gone however wastefulness in front of goal made sure the scores were level. It took a bit of brilliance from John Taylor as he found Colin McKnight with an aerial ball over the defence before Newry took the lead, McKnight coolly slotting the ball past the keeper. North’ began to grow into the game and were seeing more possession, and winning plenty of short corners but they could not get the equaliser and Newry held out until half time.

The visitors flew out of the traps in the second half and were soon back on level terms as they pounced on Newry’s slow start. Newry began to find their feet and were creating opportunities up front, one seeing Colin McKnight round the keeper and firing the ball towards goal only to see a North Down defender stop the ball with his foot on the line, somehow both umpires managed to miss the incident. With only 5 minutes remaining North Down took the lead through a deflected short corner, with very little time left Newry were up against it to get something from the game.
The home side threw everything at it and with two minutes left Colin McKnight fired home a reverse stick shot into the corner of the goal in the second phase of a short corner to bring it back to two all, there was still time for Newry to create another two great opportunities which fell to Kris Fletcher and Kyle McCombe but both were unable to convert.

Newry Seconds 3 - Mossley Thirds 1
The Seconds produced a commanding second half performance to pick up a well-deserved win in the rain at home on Saturday afternoon.
A double from the returning David Hogg and Gareth Moffett’s third goal of the season proved enough for a Seconds side that spurned numerous chances to win the match more handsomely.
They took the lead inside the first five minutes when veteran Hogg crashed home a shot from a short corner and had other opportunities to extend their lead before Mossley equalised against the run of play.
Having lost the ball just inside their own half, Newry were caught with a swift counter-attack that left a two-on-one at the back and the Mossley forward produced a smart finish past Richard McGivern in the home goal.
The hosts should have regained the lead when a cleverly-worked short corner saw Jonny McWilliams tee up Simon McCafferty six yards out, but the young Mossley keeper came off his line well to deny the striker his goal.
In the second period, Newry took command of the match and pushed Mossley back into their own half for large parts. They eventually got back in front midway through when Hogg squeezed home his second short corner of the match to make it 2-1.
Whilst other chances came and went to ensure the points would remain in Newry, the Seconds eventually got the third, and ultimately decisive goal, 10 minutes from time when Moffett was on hand to force the ball over the line from close range.
The victory sets up a top of the table clash for the Seconds away to Mossley Fourths this Friday night as the Newry outfit aim to keep their strong start to the season going.

Newry Ladies 2 - South Antrim Ladies 7
On Saturday 3rd November, Newry Olympic Ladies played South Antrim in the Intermediate cup on home turf. South Antrim chose pass back with a strong 16 ladies side. From the start South Antrim put the pressure on, driving forward with the ball but with the strong defence of Rachael Greer and Laura Simpson they were unable to have a shot on goal. It wasn't long though before South Antrim went one nil up with the ball unluckily bouncing off right back Rebecca's stick and into the goal. Newry fought back with some great passing between mid field and the forwards but the Newry ladies were unable to get into South Antrim's circle.
South Antrim were soon awarded a penalty corner and despite Newry's quick run out the ball found the back of the net, ending the first half as 2 nill to South Antrim.
The whistle went for the second half and Newry put pressure on from the start and minutes in were awarded their first short corner where the ball was injected out to Shannen Robinson who took a strike on goal but was rebounded by the goalie onto Captain Kathryn's stick who nicely placed the ball into the net. It was now 2-1 to South Antrim. Newry's defence were put under pressure from South Antrim's forwards where with some nice passes were able to dribble into the Newry circle and scored their 3rd goal and within minutes scored their 4th.
Newry retaliated and quickly won their second sort corner where the ball was injected out to Shannen who slipped the ball back to Captain Kathryn at the right post who swiped the ball through the goalies legs, securing Newry with their second goal.
Newry ladies just couldn't intercept the swift passing from South Antrim and the end result finished in a 7-2 defeat.

Newry Ladies 1sts 0-2 South Antrim Ladies 1sts
On Saturday 27th October, Newry Olympic Ladies played top of the Ulster Hockey Senior 3 League team South Antrim Ladies 1ST XI at home.
South Antrim chose sides with a strong 16 woman team giving Newry's 12 woman squad the pass back. South Antrim got off to a brisk start putting Newry under pressure but the home side held firm in defence. Newry fought back with Becky Murdock at right back slipping the ball down South’s left hand side to Rachael Greer in midfield who played a great ball across to Lynne Ervine in left wing, Ervine found herself one on one with the Keeper who was slowed to come off the line but some how Ervine missed the golden opportunity. SA were quick to retaliate switching the ball around the back and with a roll on and roll off squad kept up the speed and pace up of the game. South went one up when they attacked down the left and fired the ball at the Newry goal hitting the post but unfortunately for Newry the South Antrim winger reacted first to the ball and slotted the ball home.
Things began to get heated after some questionable decisions were given against the home side which seen many of their attacks stopped by the South Antrim umpire for alleged offences. Even with this Newry remained in the game at half time one goal down.
Second half started with chances on both sides but the game seemed to stop and start as things heated up with cards being dealt and players being sent off. Things seemed to go against Newry and within ten minutes SA were given another short only to be saved by Collette Lambe just on the goal line and cleared by Taja Mc Elroy. Soon after however South got their second after a break down the right hand side before the ball was laced across for a tap in at the back post. Around the twenty minute point Stephanie Smart was awarded a corner and Newry’s shot on goal was foiled by the SA defence. Due to a severe injury to one of the Newry players play ceased with ten minutes to go with SA wining two nil. Thanks to Donaghys Shoefair, Banbridge for sponsoring the match ball.
Newry 1sts 4-2 Portadown 1sts (Kirk Cup)
Newry hosted Portadown on Saturday in their first match of their Kirk Cup campaign. The home side flew out of the traps created 2 great chances in the first 5 minutes but they could not find the back of the net. It was not long before they did however when John Taylor’s first attempt from a short corner was saved but he picked up the rebound and fired home. Newry still remained on top creating plenty of opportunities but were wasteful in front of goal.
Portadown made the home side pay as they scored from their first short corner to level the scores.
Newry continued to create and went two up again through Taylor when he battled at the edge of the circle to win the ball back before riding a few challenges and beat the keeper to the ball to tap home. Just before the break Colin McKnight made it 3 with a well worked short corner refiling home at the near post.
In the second half Portadown stepped up pressing Newry higher up the pitch but were unable to find a break through. The home side hit on the break but again they missed a number of chances to put the game to bed the best of which falling to McWilliams and McCombe. Portadown pounced on loose marking in the Newry defence to get their second and get back into the game. However Newry hit on a counter soon after with McCombe picking the ball up in the half and driving at the Portadown defence and firing low past the keeper. The game ended 4-2 and a well deserved win for Newry.

Cookstown 3’s 5-3 Newry 2’s
An under strength Newry side made the trip to Cookstown in their latest league fixture. The home side made a lightening start striking the Newry crossbar within 10 seconds, Porter in nets was busy in the opening exchanges but managed to keep the home side at bay. Newry’s chances were limited to a couple of snap shots which the Cookstown keeper dealt with very well. Cookstown broke the deadlock fifteen minutes in through a penalty corner, and soon doubled the lead after some slack defending by Newry. The visitors pulled one back when Michael McCullough found Simon Mc Cafferty at the top of the circle and made no mistake with his finish. Newry got back on level terms when Stephen Graham tapped in at the back post to open his account for the season. On the half time whistle Cookstown got their noses back in front preying on a mixup in the Newry defence slipped the ball through Porters legs.
Newry drew first blood in the second half with Graham getting his second drawing them level and gave them hope that they might get something from the game. They could have took the lead but Adrian Patterson’s attempt squeezed just the wrong side of the post. As the game wore on Cookstown started to become more dominate making their larger squad pay as they got two goals late on to finish the game 5-3 winners.

U21s
Our U21s put in a battling performance at home to Tir na nOg on Sunday afternoon to record a fully deserved two-point win, 3 – 9 to 2 – 10.
An early Matthew Girvan point got the Shane’s of to good start but two points, one from a free, put the Portadown side ahead only for Eamon McCabe to power forward and find the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Two pointed frees from Tir na nOg tied the game before a long ball forward beat the full-back and Matthew Girvan seized on it to rifle home his side’s second goal of the contest. A fine long-range point from Padraig Magee gave the Shane’s a four-point lead but a late first-half point from Tir na nOg saw them trail by three at the break.
An early second-half point from the impressive Ronan Byrne restored the Shane’s four-point advantage and minutes later the home side raised their third green flag when Matthew Girvan got his toe to the ball for his second and his side’s third goal of the game. The Shane’s were well on top at this stage and increased their lead to eight when Eamon McCabe slotted the ball over the bar following some great approach play. Two Tir na nOg points reduced the deficit to six and minutes later it was down to just three as they notched up their first goal of the game before the sides swapped a point apiece with Declan Harris on target for the Shane’s. Cormac Feely popped the ball over from a tight angle to put the Shane’s four to the good but a quick-fire goal and point had Tir na nOg back on level terms and they really had their tails up at this stage. However, the Shane’s dug deep and points from Ronan Byrne and Jack Beattie put them back in front with less than five minutes left on the clock and in a tense both sides scored another point each, with Michael McParland getting the insurance score for the Shane’s deep into injury time.

Parkview Ladies 1sts 2-3 Newry Ladies 1sts
On Saturday 20th October Newry Ladies travelled away to Ballyclare High School to play on the newly laid astro pitch against Parkview. Newry Ladies started very slowly and Parkview took the lead with barely a minute gone. Newry's heads dropped a little and found it difficult to settle into the game and adjust to the bouncy pitch. Parkview played to this strength and within another ten minutes were two nil up. Newry started a roll on roll off formation with fresh legs and slowly started to grow into the game and with some quick fire interplay between Greer, Inns, Benson and Baird they won their first corner. The resulting corner was played short to Shannen Robinson who’s strike was saved by the Parkview keeper. Newry were now on top and with Parkview reduced to 10 players just before half time the visitors kept up the pressure but were unable to capitalise.
At half time Newry changed their formation and were much more comfortable with the new setup, they pulled one back when Greer won a long corner and from the resulting attack she found Benson in the circle who deflected the ball smartly into the net.

Parkview fought back driving down their strong right hand side only to have it blocked by Lewis in defence who was quick to slip the ball back through to McIlroy who drove through the midfield back at Parkview again. Picked up once again by Greer who drove into the Parkview circle, Benson scored her second following a deflection on goal. With everyone on an even playing field the game started all over again for both sides with only ten minutes left. Parkview took their pass back trying to keep possession of the ball but were foiled by Murdock and sending the ball right across the Parkview goal found Robinson who slipped the ball past the Parkview goalie to put Newry in the lead. With five minutes to go Newry kept thier heads, keeping possession of the ball until the final whistle.
Team: C Lambe (goals), K Baird (Captain) E McCullough, L Simpson, V Lewis, R Murdock, T McIlroy, L Ervine, R Greer, G Davidson, A Benson, L Inns, S Smart, S Robinson.
NICS 1sts 2-5 Newry 1sts
Newry travelled to the Play Ball ground at Stormont for their second game in 48 hours following their 1-1 draw away to Bangor on Thursday night. The visitors found it tough in the first half with the previous game definitely having taken it out of them. NICS scored with 15 minutes gone after a slick move down their left hand side, and it really looked like Newry were not going to get back into the game even at this early stage. However Pelayo Gonzalez making his first start for Newry provided some trickery inside the Service circle and manage to loop a reverse stick shot over the keeper before Keith McWilliams tapped the ball in at the back post. Gonzalez came close again when he was found high up the pitch and rounded the keeper but from a tight angle his attempt was cleared off the line. The teams went in all square at half time.
Again in the second half Newry looked a yard off the pace but they managed to draw first blood when Matty Russell was found in the circle with his back to goal and some how managed to swivel and chip the keeper with a reverse stick shot, it was very quickly 3 when Russell again got on the score sheet when he was the first to react to the rebound after a save from the service keeper. Only ten minutes gone in the second half and it was all action.
Service replied within two minutes capitalising on a mistake in the Newry defence, 3-2 and it was all very tight again.
Both sides were not sitting back and were going all out for the next goal, this however fell to Newry after some brilliant work from McWilliams who won the ball high up the pitch and drove into the circle, turning his defender inside out before rocketing a shot last the keeper at the near post. Newry tried to manage the game and hold on to their two goal advantage which they did so comfortably and still managed to get 1 more with five minutes remaining with Colin McKnight getting in on the act to seal the 5-2 victory.
Team: L Beck, C Henning, A Baird, S Megaw, R Irwin, J Taylor, N McKnight, M Russell, K McWilliams, C McKnight, R McGivern, J Greer, K Fletcher, P Gonzalez
The Newry AC athletes were back out competing in the disciplines of Mountain, Cross Country and Road Racing this week.
Mourne Skyline Mountain Trail Race - Newcastle
Noel Carr took on the prestigious annual Skyline MTR on Saturday morning. This was a tough race covering 35k and 3,370 metres of ascent.
On a warm but misty day the race route took the runners from Newcastle to the Donard/Comedagh Col (Saddle), Bearnagh, Meelmore, Foffany, Loughshannagh, Meelbeg, Meelmore, Bearnagh, Comedagh, Donard and back down to the finish line in Donard Park.

Noel ran a tactical race and with his seasoned experience and strong endurance he worked his way up through the race field ensuring that he did not push too early and burnout - a mistake that runners can often make. In a race field of 247, Noel had gained 96th position on reaching the Foffany checkpoint. On the return leg, Noel had gained 25 places on reaching Bearnagh and on a final push over the final two summits of Comedagh and Donard, Noel descended powerfully to the finish line to take a fantastic 47th placing.
This is a brilliant placing in a race field of top UK and Irish athletes - well done Noel.

Well done to Newry AC athlete, Sarah Jane Beattie, who deservedly lifted the Female Newcomer Award at the Newry Triathlon Club Awards on Saturday evening.
U21 Boys
Our U21 boys suffered a seven-point defeat in their opening game in this year’s competition, losing 1 – 13 to 1 – 6 to St Enda’s in Grange. However, the result could have been different as the Shane’s squandered no less than nine gilt-edge goal opportunities, including missed penalty, through a combination of poor shooting, poor decision making in front of goal and some great goalkeeping from the opposing keeper.
The Shane’s trailed by 1 – 7 to 0 – 0 coming towards the end of the first-half before late points from Padraig Magee and Matthew Girvan saw them go into the half-time break eight in arrears. St Enda’s got the opening point of the second-half but the Shane’s scored 1 – 4 without reply to get back to within two points of St Enda’s, the scores coming from Matthew Girvan, Donal Austin and Padraig Magee. This was as good as it got for the Shane’s as St Enda’s got the last five points of the game to claim the win, 1- 13 to 1 – 6.
Next up for the lads is a home game against Tir na nÓg next weekend where they will be hoping for a better performance.

Minor Girls
It was disappointment for our minor ladies on Sunday afternoon, losing out to a very good Armagh Harps team in the semi-final of the championship. After a nip and tuck first-half the Shane’s went into the half-time interval only three points in arrears but a real blitz from Armagh Harps in the opening ten minutes of the second period all but won them the game. However, credit must go to the young Shane’s girls as they battled hard right until the final whistle and registered the last two scores of the game. The Shane’s scorers on the day were: Shauna Reavey 2 – 0, Sorcha McDonnell 1 – 3, Sinead McDonnell 0 – 1, Rachel McCabe 0 – 1, Lia Robb 0 – 1.
Well done to all the girls and their management team on a very good season and they can all now take a well-deserved break.
