Write a commentNewry, Mourne and Down District Council have once again applied for planning permission for a free standing electronic screen in Marcus Square, Newry. The planning application was received on the 8th of July.
The application if successful would keep the screen at the existing location and follows the reversal of a successful planning permission application in a Judicial Review, instigated by the Catholic Church who argued they were not consulted during the application process and that it obscured Newry Cathedral.
Bishop John McArevey from Newry Cathedral Parish asked the council to review the location of the screen in December while many others took to Facebook to both support and criticise it. An online petition on Change.org asking for it’s removal has gained over a thousand signatures.
’The Big Screen’ screened several of the Euro Football Championship games over the summer but it has been a topic of controversy since it was erected in December and in recent times has displayed a picture but no sound.
