Write a commentConsultation on the remaining stretches of the Carlingford Lough Greenway took place last week in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre in Newry with council officials and Doran Consulting officials explaining maps of the proposed route from Victoria Lock to the border.
The full Greenway was due to be completed in 2020 but ecological and land ownership issues have slowed the pace of progress and at this stage 2021 is looking more likely.
An initial plan to keep the Greenway by the waters edge from Victoria Lock has now changed with the proposed path crossing at Victoria Lock into Fathom Forest and continuing on that side till just after the derelict pub formerly known as Patsy's Parlour, before crossing back to the water side as far as the border.
The existing Greenway stretch from the Albert Basin in Newry till Victoria Lock opened in 2018 and is proving to be an extremely popular route for walkers, runners and cyclists. The completion all the way to Carlingford is a key priority for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Louth County Council are also progressing with plans at present to link the stretch from the Border to Omeath and from Carlingford Marina to Carlingford village. Their stretch plans to make use of some of the former Newry to Greenore railway line land before mainly skirting the coast til it reaches Omeath.
