Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Cllr Charlie Casey has condemned those behind recent attacks on vehicles in the Camlough Road area over the past week.
Commenting on the incidents the Councillor said “On Sunday a Translink employee who was on his way home after work pulled his car over to help a woman with a flat tyre. A thug on a scrambler type bike came whizzing around and put a brick through his windscreen. This man normally has his son, who has special needs, with him in the car and it was only luck that on this occasion his son was being looked after by his brother.
“On Monday then, in the same area, thugs launched stones at a Translink bus as it made its way through the area. Again, nobody was hurt but windows were broken and several passengers were left badly shaken.
“These are not youthful antics; it is not exaggeration to say that had the driver been hit by one of those stones, which he very nearly was, we could be dealing with a tragedy here.
“I want to speak directly to the community when I say if you know who is behind these attacks then you must report them to either the PSNI or a community representative. It is your family members who use these buses, it’s your area that will be left isolated when these services are withdrawn, it’s your community whose name will be blackened and it is you they will turn on next when there are no buses left to throw stones at.
“I also want to speak to the people carrying out these attacks and their parents, because many of them seem quite young. What sort of future do you think you will have if one idiotic decision to throw a stone ends up costing someone their lives? You need to cop yourselves on or if you think your children are involved, for their sake, you need to get them under control before someone is killed.”
