The upcoming extension to the Carlingford Lough Greenway was discussed at last nights Newry, Mourne and Down Council Enterprise, Regeneration and Tourism committee meeting, conducted via Skype.
Relating to the continuation of the greenway from Victoria Lock to the border, Jonathan McGilly, Assistant Director Enterprise Employment and Regeneration explained the progress of the project and decisions that need to be taken to the committee.
Louth County Council have already undertaken their approval process for the southern section from Omeath to the border and Newry, Mourne and Down Council are also submitting their application this month.
Councillors agreed that the council should work closely with Louth County Council in regards to achieving approval from Interreg for a new Business Case. They also agreed to meet all affected land owners to agree suitable land tenure transfer.
Councillors noted the pending application and agreed to follow up with planners to ensure progress and a decision by early 2021. They also agreed that council would enter into the required legal tenure agreements with land owners along the northern section.
An amended business case has also been made to funders Interreg seeking required additional funding to deliver the project.
The meeting was also told about damage to the existing stretch of greenway caused by storm tidal erosion. An application has been lodged with Historic Environment Division, Department for Communities and subject to approval council intend to ask the existing contractor to cost and carry out additional repair work.
