With much local conversation around the potential of The Quays shopping complex becoming a location for the Council's civic hub, a council spokesperson has poured cold water on the suggestion, explaining that the site hasn't been considered as a site for the hub. Additionally the spokesperson stated that there has been no communication with the owner of The Quays.
The owners of The Quays entered into administration in March 2026 with the future of the facility uncertain.
Earlier this month the SOS Daisy Hill Group had suggested the site as a potential location not only for the civic hub but for the proposed Southern Trust health hub which was expected to be built at Abbey Way.
A Judicial Review is currently underway concerning the proposal by Council to build the Newry Civic Hub behind Newry Cathedral. The project received planning approval almost a year ago in June 2025 but has been beset by a series of delays, most recently the JR.
In reply to a query from Newry.ie the Council spokesperson said: “The Quays shopping centre location has not been considered as a site for the Newry Civic and Regional Hub, nor has any there been any communication with the owner of The Quays in Newry in relation to investigating the facility as a location for the proposed Newry Civic and Regional Hub.”
