Plans have been submitted yesterday, 7 July by Louth County Council, for the provison of a section of greenway to continue the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Omeath Pier to the border, a distance of approximately 4km.
At present only the Omeath to Carlingford Marina section and the Albert Basin to Victoria Lock sections are complete!
The proposed new section of greenway will mainly traverse agricultural land and woodland belonging to a number of landowners and generally be situated between/along the old rail line embankment and the shore/coastline of Carlingford Lough.
The proposed greenway will connect to existing and future sections of the overall cross-border Carlingford Lough Greenway network which seeks to encourage more people to walk and cycle and undertake more cross border trips, either for recreational, amenity or travel to work purposes.
Design will be a shared walking and cycling greenway ranging in width from 2 metres to 3 metres.
The proposed route is section two of three new sections linking Newry City directly to Carlingford village. The others being from Carlingford Marina into the village and from the border to Victoria Lock.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council are expected to apply for planning permission for the Victoria Lock to the border section imminently and plans would be for work to start in 2021.
