Write a commentThe historic Newry Canal was in the television limelight today when well known BBC NI presenter and Weatherman Barra Best took to the iconic waterway for the hour long trip down the waterway from the Albert Basin to Victoria Lock, aboard Newry's latest tall ship, the Dutch Barge Volharding. The weather could hardly have been better for the weather forecaster and film crew with the boat silently and effortlessly gliding over the still water on a beautiful calm sunny Spring evening.
BBC Northern Ireland are presently filming along the River Bann and it's connecting waterways including the Newry Canal for a programme that is scheduled to be broadcast later this year/ early next year. The programmes Producer, Gemma Cunningham originally hails from Newry.
Traditional music on the trip was supplied by musicians Briege Quinn and Finbar Magee and Geraldine Wheelan.
The Volharding chartered by Silvery Light Sailing, based in Newry was journeying on her way down the canal and will travel through Victoria Lock tomorrow en-route to Belfast and then Liverpool for Maritime Festival appearances.
Volharding translates from Dutch as Perseverance and was built in 1890. It is incredibly well equipped and in pristine condition with a spacious saloon and dining area as well as six bedrooms and three bathrooms.
