Newry and Mourne District Council in partnership with European Recycling Platform (ERP) are pleased to announce the winners of their waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) competition.
The competition was open to anyone who recycled an unwanted electrical item at any of the Councils Household Recycling Centres (HRC’s) from 17th June- 17th July 2013. The prize was a Kindle and £20 Amazon gift voucher for one person from each of 7 of the HRC’s participating and to enter you had to complete the sentence "I think recycling WEEE is a good idea because"
There were hundreds of entries and the 7 lucky winners were:
Newtownhamilton - Stephen McGarvey "It helps the environment"
Newry - Helen Grant "It helps to protect our environment and helps save our resources"
Camlough - Lauren Smith "Its good that we have somewhere like Camlough to recycle equipment and know that parts are being used again."
Hilltown - Grainne South "WE continue to rEuse and rEduce waste!"
Kilkeel - Lisa Keenan "Technology is taking over the world if we are going to embrace technology we must not forget nature and the benefits of the recycling process."
Warrenpoint - Paula Downey "Saves precious resources like gold and copper from being landfilled and gives them the opportunity to be used again in other appliances."
Crossmaglen - Martin Finnegan "It means everything goes to the proper places and not at the side of the road."
The winners were presented with their prizes by the Mayor, Cllr Michael Ruane who said, “Congratulations to the 7 winners of the competition we hope they will enjoy their new kindle. Recycling WEEE helps saves resources, energy and the environment. I would like to encourage all of our residents to make full use of their local Household Recycling Centre where they can recycle up to 22 different types of material. Last year our recycling rate was 37% and we would like to improve on this next year. This can only be done with help from everyone in the District.”
