Warrenpoint now has a song to call its very own, thanks to the musical talent of local singer songwriter and artist Danny Doran.

The beautiful catchy tune aims to show the world what a gem we have here in the heart of County Down. As well as showcasing the town Doran plans to raise some funds for The Happiness Café with some busking in the town on the 15th of August.

Newry.ie had the pleasure of recording Doran performing Wonderful Warrenpoint on the seafront in Warrenpoint when plenty of people stopped to say hello.

Doran spent a few weeks penning 'Wonderful Warrenpoint'. The song tells the story of a time when Warrenpoint was the place to be for the social life and the crack.

On inspiration Doran said: "I used to come to Warrenpoint an awful lot when I was younger. Warrenpoint was the spot to go to. It wasn't like today where everybody has cars and God knows what. We could hitch it down, we could take the bus down, we could take the train back down. That's how far back I go!  I've always loved Warrenpoint. I used to swim here, and then of course growing up you were going to the pubs and then going to the dances and chasing the girls - and there was always plenty of girls about, and that's really what inspired the song."

He believes the town badly needs a song of its very own. "Everywhere needs a song to identify with and for people from foreign climes nowadays stuff goes all around the world in a flash, so why not have a song about Warrenpoint to attract people?"

Doran is Chairperson of The Happiness Café in Kilkeel, a charity which helps and supports people with dementia and their families. They meet in the Nautilis Centre in Kilkeel every Wednesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. You're never alone when there's a group like us. Everyone is welcome and there's always somebody there in the same predicament as yourself, and it's good to talk about it to each other. It's great fun, we have music, we have art, we have games, bingo, and all sorts of stuff, and you'll get cup of tea and a biscuit, It's really good crack. It's the camaraderie, people look forward to it. People come from as far away as Markethill to Kilkeel ,and that's a fair wee journey, because they enjoy the company."

Between 2pm and 5pm next Saturday 15 August Doran and friends will be busking close to the Friar Tucks Restaurant to raise some money for the charity and also generate some awareness about dementia. You can be sure that Wonderful Warrenpoint will be in the mix!
