This years Newry City Halloween Concert on Thursday the 31st of October will be an X Factor free event with the major emphasis on home grown talent including a performance from local band The Nooks.
Newry's past X Factor fixation saw X Factor competitors make many concert appearances in recent years including Matt Cardle this year, Amelia Lily in 2012, Jedward and Lloyd Daniels in 2011; Eoghan Quigg in 2009, Shayne Ward in 2007 and probably others as well.
The Halloween Concert takes place this year at the Albert Basin.
A novel Floating Stage will be used following on from Septembers Festival of Water Concert with Matt Cardle on the water outside The Quays.
The free concert will take place from 6.30pm to 9pm and includes performances from Jimmy Buckley who no doubt will be singing his latest single Cajun Baby.
Also on the bill The Nooks, The Housem8s, Johnny Brady and compere Conor Phillips.
The event will conclude with a fireworks display.

This Halloween's Family fun concert takes place next Thursday the 31st so get on down to Newry’s Albert Basin for a spook-tacular event.
Locals stars The Nooks, Jimmy Buckley, The Housem8s, Johnnie Brady and compere Connor Phillips will take to a floating stage at the Albert Basin and provide the soundtrack for your Halloween open air concert. The entertainment will take place between 6:30pm – 9:00pm and is completely FREE.
The concert will conclude with an electrifying fireworks extravaganza.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT:
TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS will be in operation from 4.00pm on Thursday 31st October at the junction of William Street along Albert Basin / Fathom Line for the duration of the concert.
Traffic going to Omeath, Carlingford and Greenore should proceed along Bridge Street through Drumalane. Traffic travelling to the Quays Shopping & Leisure Centre should enter via Bridge Street entrance.

North Street Car Park - Located Water Street / Abbey Way
Canal Bank 1 - Located opposite Buttercrane Shopping Centre
Lower Water Street Car Park - Located behind Newry Court House

Newry Museum has a series of interesting lectures coming up this month which are inspired by their permanent exhibition “The Border Town” and their temporary exhibition “Brotherhoods and Friendly Societies” as well as highlighting key events that are being currently commemorated
First of on Sunday 10th November from 3pm to 4pm, Professor James Kelly, St. Patrick’s College, DCU will give the talk, “The Freemasons in Ireland”.
The talk will briefly examine the theories surrounding the origins of masonry, and looks at its development, from the establishment of The Grand Lodge of Ireland in 1725 in Dublin and its growth in Ulster, to its condemnation by the Catholic Church in the 19th century, moving from a non-denominational society to an increasingly denominationally exclusive and withdrawn organisation.
On Sunday 17th November from 3pm to 4pm Cathal McManus, Queens University Belfast, makes a welcome return to the Museum to present “Irish Labour in the era of Connolly and Larkin”
The lecture will examine one of the key periods of the Irish Labour movement that culminated in the 1913 Dublin Lockout. In particular, the politics of two key political figures, James Connolly and Jim Larkin will be examined within the context of key events such as the 1907 Dock Worker’s strike in Belfast and the Dublin Lockout.
Local historian Hugh McShane will visit the Museum to speak on the “The Role of Women in the Home Rule Crisis 1912-14”, on Thursday 21st November, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.
The spread of the Suffragette campaign to Ireland had politicised many women, who were beginning to resent the constraints on their freedom to vote and the years, 1912-14, were a period in which women played a significant role in the campaign for and against Home Rule and the eventual outcome of those historic events.
Finally, on Sunday 24th November from 3pm to 4pm, Dr Tony Buckley will talk about “Brotherhoods in Ireland” from the early 18th to the 20th centuries.
The brotherhood was the typical form of voluntary associations in this period. They had a huge variety of purposes, such as friendly societies, temperance societies, trade unions and orders which had political and religious purposes.
They modelled themselves on the craft guilds, once central to the life of the medieval towns, and they had secret handshakes and secret signs with elaborate regalia reflecting their secretive rituals. Some of these rituals were frightening, even dangerous. They all, however, had traditions which were peculiar to themselves.
The talk will examine these organisations that were highly democratic from a period when democracy was rare in public life.

Theatre of Pluck are presenting The Trouble with Harry on Tuesday 26th at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre in Newry.
Theatre of Pluck is Northern Ireland's first publicly funded gay theatre company, producing quality and exciting work that explores issues of LGBT identity. Previous shows include Divided Radical And Gorgeous (DRAG) (2011-12) and Bison (2009-10), both of which received critical acclaim.
"Eugenia becomes Harry. Harry meets Annie. Trouble ensues. The Trouble with Harry is the thrilling new play by award winning Australian playwright Lachlan Philpott which tells the story of Eugenia Falleni, the notorious 'ManWoman' of Sydney in the early 1900's. Enjoying a unique place in Sydney’s bawdy history, Falleni’s story continues to fascinate.
An Italian immigrant, Falleni lived much of her life as a man - Harry Crawford - and served time in prison for the murder of her own wife.
This work takes an idiosyncratic look at the Falleni story, questions versions of this history and looks at contemporary debates and assumptions surrounding gender."

Newry and Mourne Choral Group “Vocal Score” hold their Annual Christmas Concert tonight Thursday 19th in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre at 7.30pm.
The concert will have a new format this year. So popular was Vocal Score's cover of the suite from “Les Miserables” in their 2013 Spring Concert, that they will do this again for the opening half of Thursday's concert. Those who haven't already heard Eithne Bell and Lowry Hodgett's hilarious harmonic contest for the title of “Master of the House” are in for a treat. Those who have will be delighted to have the chance to enjoy it again.
The second half of the concert will take on more of the traditional seasonal flavour, with carols from different countries and across different ages expressing the universality of the Christmas experience.
This year there will be only one concert in the Arts Centre, and tickets are already on sale from that venue [£10] with all proceeds to be shared between local charities, Southern Area Hospice and St Vincent de Paul.

Vocal Score won the National Gospel Choir Competition at St Columbs Hall in Derry last month with the adjudicators heaping praise on the “beautiful solo singing” of Ciara [Bell] McParland, who covered Whoopy Goldberg's ”Joyful, Joyful” and Lowry Hodgett [James Taylor's “Shed a Little Light”] Both these songs will feature prominently tonight.
Those who are unable to catch the full concert on Thursday can still share in Vocal Score's Christmas celebrations at a Carol Service in St Mary's Church of Ireland, John Mitchel Place on Sunday, December 22nd at 7.30 pm.

Gaudeamus present Carols old and New in the Convent of Mercy on Catherine Street tonight Friday 20th at 8pm.
This promises to capture the true feeling of Christmas as they perform for you some if the most popular carols ever composed.
The choir is made up of very talented Choral singers with a lot of performance experience.
On the night they will be accompanied by Brass players from St. Catherine's Band. It will be a great opportunity to unwind and relax in the run up to Christmas.
The choir are certainly looking forward to performing in the convent one of Newry's most historic buildings. This is an event that will uplift everyone in attendance.

The band Sunshine will ring the new year in at Bellinis while across the road at the Canal Court it's The Edition on stage.
Mourne Country Hotel has Country music star Jim Devine while music at a slightly different pace will be happening over at Amplified with Negative Creeps playing the music of Nirvana with 18 Arches in "support"
At The Bank Nightclub it's a Rockin Rolling New Years Eve while the bar is a more sedate affair with King Sized Jacks on the Mike.
B.E.D Nightclub will welcome 2014 in with a Masquerade Ball.
The Cavern has Purple Heart playing. Playback on stage at the INF, Brian O'Conner in Maddens Bar and lots lots more.

An Exhibition of Paintings by the late Frank Watson is currently on show at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.
Frank passed away late last year, and his wife Maria decided to show his catalogue of works spanning many years in tribute to him.
The works include landscapes, cityscapes, still life and animals, and their vibrancy adds to the buzz in our Bell Gallery and Café. All the works are for sale, and prices negotiable.
Frank had exhibited over the years in the Centre, and that his works are still available to the public ensures his legacy continues.

Folk Club An Bonnán Buí is moving from its home in Crossmaglen to the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre with a first gig from Daoiri Farrell scheduled for Saturday the 25th of January.
The years have definitely been good to Folk Club An Bonnán Buí. To date, the very finest exponents of traditional Irish Music flock there to weave their magic among a captivated audience which, of late, seems to number more and more people from outside the confines of Crossmaglen.
With this in mind, the organisers have made the decision to move their well established brand to a more centrally located venue and there is no doubting that the Auditorium at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre in Newry will cater to a constantly growing number of people from South Down, Armagh and even as far away as Tyrone who are making this monthly concert and workshop a regular fixture in their calendar.
This month the Folk Club will feature a very special singer who is making big waves in Folk and Traditional Irish Music circles. Daoiri Farrell is a very accomplished folk singer and bouzouki/guitar/banjo player from Dublin who is a graduate of the Ceoltoir Higher National Diploma in Traditional Music Performance Course in BFCE. One of his accolades is that he is, currently, the All Ireland Senior Ballad Singing Champion. A title that is justly deserved and just one listen to his debut album The First Turn will confirm this.
Farrell has a pure and natural voice and influences like Andy Irvine, Christy Moore and Frank Harte are evident in his delivery. All of this and his innate ability to grab the audience with his humour and marvellous story telling promise to make his appearance at Folk Club An Bonnán Buí in The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre on 25th of January one well worth attending. Tickets are limited and can be bought at the Sean Hollywood Centre (028-30313180) or booked through the An Bonnán Buí Facebook account at the very reasonable rate of £10 per Adult, £5 per Child and £25 per family (2 adults and 2 children).
