Newry Rocks is organising a fundraising night for Gaza next Friday night the 29th of August at Amplified in Water Street, Newry.
Newry Rocks recognises the tragic situation in Gaza and we will be organising a gig to raise much needed funds towards Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).
Line-up includesThe Burlesque Belles with live music from Caolan Dooley, Pete Keighery, Hugh McCreesh, The Summits
DJ’s DJ Nitemode and DJ Jose plus many more special guests.
This event is not affiliated with any Political ideology or Religious organisation – it open and welcoming to all who recognise the plight of the peoples living in Gaza and understand that their donation and support can make a difference.

The Irish choral ensemble, Anúna launches its 2014/2015 season this September with a concert in St Colman'a College Chapel in Newry later this month.
Founded in 1987 by its current director, Michael McGlynn, Anúna has over the last quarter century created a unique sonic ambience receiving accolades for the originality of their performances, recordings and the natural, unmannered quality of the singers' vocal production.
Anúna's concerts feature a compelling combination of candle-lit movement, costume and atmospheric music. All of their material is written or arranged for the group by McGlynn, and includes reconstructions of early and medieval music from Ireland and beyond. Anúna sing unaccompanied and without conductor, with between twelve and fourteen singers in any performance.
Their flexibility as an ensemble has allowed them to slip easily between musical genres. As a highly acclaimed classical choral ensemble they have appeared twice at the World Sacred Music Festival in Morocco, given the first-ever Irish Prom at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, and have sung at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In June 2014 Anúna performed to great acclaim at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, where they will return at the end of the 2014/15 season.
Their unique nature has allowed them to cross over successfully into various other musical genres. In 1994 they created the vocal ambience of Riverdance, before departing the Show in 1996. During that period they reached top 10 in the U.K. Singles Charts and held the number 1 spot in the Irish Singles Chart for eighteen weeks. While curating the prestigious Meltdown Festival at London's South Bank in 1995, Elvis Costello invited Anúna to perform.
The 2014/2015 season is truly international, featuring tours to Japan, the Netherlands and China and beginning with a performance in Newry followed by one in Belfast.
The Newry concert is on Thursday 25 September at 8pm at St Colman's College Chapel, Newry while the Belfast concert is the following day Friday 26 September at Clonard Monastery, Belfast

For the first time in our history the majority of our singers, who come from all over the world, are from Northern Ireland. Newry and Mourne Museum will host its annual Autumn Lecture Series during the month of October. The theme of the series is Landownership in South-West Down and it aims to look at the people, the places and the events that shaped the area since the Plantation of Ulster. An excellent line-up of speakers has been arranged and it promises to be of interest to a wide ranging audience.
The first of three lectures begins on Thursday October 2nd at 7.30pm, with Professor Raymond Gillespie, Lecturer at NUI, Maynooth.
Professor Gillespie will examine how County Down was different in the seventeenth century. The county was not part of the Ulster Plantation scheme and therefore its landowners were not constrained by the rules and regulations that were set down. This lecture explores the problems of survival and failure of landowners, with the social consequences of the distribution of power in South Down, over the seventeenth century.
On Thursday October 9th at 7.30pm, Dr. Olwen Purdue, Lecturer in Modern Irish History at Queen’s University, Belfast will examine the experience of the Big House in South Ulster during the turbulent period from 1880 through to the early twentieth century.
Focusing on a number of large estates in Armagh and South Down, the talk will explore the challenges faced by the landlord class over the period as a combination of tenant agitation and government legislation led to the loss of their political and economic ascendancy, the break-up of their estates and, in some cases, the destruction of their country houses.
The final lecture takes place on Thursday October 16th at 7.30pm, by local historian Hugh McShane. This presentation illustrates the history of Warrenpoint, a fascinating example of a town that grew to become a popular holiday and tourist destination, a significant international port, and a thriving community.
Hugh will tell the story of the economic, social and political history of Warrenpoint, and the role played by leading figures who helped shape its identity, drive its development and establish it as a major influence in South Down and beyond.
Admission to each lecture costs £3 and tea/coffee will be provided. As seating is strictly limited booking is advisable.

To commemorate World War One Soroptimist International Newry and Mourne are holding an Afternoon Tea Dance in Newry Town Hall this weekend and all are welcome.
The afternoon of nostalgia is on Saturday the 27th of September from 3pm to 6pm and includes dancing to the Rhythm Big Band. Dress in the period of the day if you wish.

Newpoint Players will be performing Juno and the Paycock from next Tuesday the 14th of October at 7.30pm in Newry Town Hall. The drama will run until Friday the 17th.
A classic piece of Irish theatre Juno and the Paycock written by Sean O’Casey explores the effects of Civil War politics upon a family already crippled by poverty.
The lead role of Juno is taken by Eithne Bell with her useless husband, Mark Hughes, the ‘strut tin’ paycock’ of the title.
The Camilla in the relationship is Cap’n Boyle’s drinking nutty, Joxer, a role taken by Anthony Fitzpatrick.
There are Seventeen of a cast in the play which is directed by Donal O'Hanlon.

It's Strictly Come Dancing time again and this Friday night the 17th of October the Millar Suite in the Canal Court is the place to be.
The night is in aid of Davina’s Ark who provide aftercare addiction services in the Newry area.
Davina’s Ark offers hope and new opportunity to the many in our society who are afflicted and or affected by the curse of addiction. A shocking and sobering truth is that alcohol and drug misuse in our society is one of the biggest public health issues we have to address. There is not a single family in our society that isn’t somehow impacted by the negative effects of addiction.
With at least 9 couples on stage it will certainly be a night to remember.
If you want a great nights fun make sure you get along.

Buttercrane Shopping Centre is getting all geared up for a spooky Halloween.
The centre have a specially commissioned giant Halloween chair complete with ghostly trees which will be in the Mall for Halloween #selfies in the run up to the scariest day of the year.
Wee Arty Ones will also be helping keep your ‘little terrors’ entertained with free art and craft workshops in the Kids Club unit on Thursday 30th October 2-6pm.
A professional photographer will be on the mall on 30th and 31st October taking Free souvenir portraits on the new Halloween chair.
Retailers are also getting involved with a FREE trick or treat session throughout the centre from 30th-31st October. Kids will collect a bag from customer services and make their way around the participating retailers and receive sweets.

Preparations are well underway for Southern Area Hospice Services’ upcoming fundraiser, ‘The Farmer Wants a Wife’. The event, which is being generously supported by main sponsor Tullyherron Farm Feeds and also by the Ulster Farmers’ Union, will see a number of eligible farmers take to the stage in the Armagh City Hotel on Saturday 22nd November 2014 in an entertaining contest which could see them win themselves a date with a potential future wife from the audience.
MC Malachi Cush will put the farmers through their paces, ensuring that they all have the chance to impress before the audience place their votes to determine who the winner is. During their interviews, the farmers will have the opportunity to perform a party-piece in an effort to showcase their talents to help secure themselves a few extra votes. Last year the party-pieces included everything from farmer-style Irish dancing displays to cow milking demonstrations on the most un-cooperative of cows. With this year’s event promising to be just as entertaining make sure to get your tickets and come along for a great night’s craic.
The audience vote will added to the scores of the star-studded judging panel which is made up of Lynette Fay of BBC Radio Ulster, Roberta Simmons, Deputy President of the Young Farmers Clubs’ of Ulster, John Jardine, full-time farmer and dedicated Southern Area Hospice Services volunteer and Farmer Joe, star of Armagh Tigers’ recent comedy production of ‘Farmer Joe & his John Deere Tractor’.
Anne Mac Oscar of Southern Area Hospice Services encouraged people to come along saying, “We are looking forward to another great night in the Armagh City Hotel on Saturday 22nd November 2014. I would like to thank the farmers who are taking part to help raise funds for their local Hospice. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and show their support for the Farmers by voting for them. All funds raised will help Southern Area Hospice Services to continue our work in the local area caring for people who are living with Cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, HIV and Aids. We have a fundraising target of £2.3 million in 2014 alone and so every penny really does count as we work towards this”.
