Newry and Mourne Museum, in partnership with Down County Museum, will host a free conference on the 7th of June providing an insight into the War’s impact on County Down during the years during 1914 - 1918. The event will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
The period 1914 - 1918 was a pivotal one in Irish history, as the path of Irish politics was dramatically altered by the outbreak of the First World War.
The conference will look at various programmes and exhibitions running in both Museums that explore diverse aspects of the First World War in this region.
There will be a lecture titled ‘Researching the Impact of the First World War on Newry and Mourne’, which will review of the Museum’s Heritage Lottery funded project.
The talk on ‘Newry’s Roll of Honour’ will provide an insight into the genesis of its production and presentation, as well as examining the potential of the information it provides as a starting point for genealogical research.
The Museum Curator and Assistant Curator will take participants on a guided tour of Newry and Mourne Museum’s new temporary exhibition ‘Local Impacts of the First World War’
Guest speakers from Down County Museum will outline details of their new exhibition ‘The People's Story: Commemorating World War I in County Down’ which looks at County Down in the lead up to World War I and then how the county was affected by the course of the war.
The talk ‘Transformations: Politics and Protest in County Down 1900-1920s’ will focus on the on-line learning resource for Key Stage 3 pupils has been developed during the course of the museum’s PEACE III funded community history project.
Finally there will be an open forum for participants to discuss what sort of Museum service you would wish to see in light of the fact that in 2015 Newry and Mourne District will merge with Down District to form a new council.

X Factor star Luke Friend will be on stage next month at the Ignition Quay Event at the Albert Basin.
The event will have Stunt Motorcyle Display team, The Trialstars from Comber, appearing while on stage there will be music from intercultural group Beyond Skins and X-Factor’s Luke Friend with UTV’s Pamela Ballantine as MC. There will be a Laser Tag Arena, face painter, bouncy castle and penalty shoot-out for all to enjoy. The Fire Service of Northern Ireland will be attending the event and demonstrating an emergency extraction from a road traffic accident car. The coastguard will be in attendance and the PSNI will have their Connect III R32 VW Golf on display as well.

The PEACE III Southern Partnership are facilitating the event at the Albert Basin on Saturday 14th June between 1pm and 5pm. This event is funded by the European Unions PEACE III programme and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. The day will have fun, music and entertainment throughout.
Gates open at 1pm and admission is free. Anyone attending the event should use the local car parks in Newry City and come early to avoid traffic delays as there will be no parking onsite apart from the competition display cars.

Breda is taking her one woman comedy The Word of Breda on a 32 county tour of Ireland this year and visits Amplified in Newry this Wednesday night the 25th of June at 8pm.
It's all preparation for her one woman, month long show at Edinburgh Festival.

The lesbian comedian and performance artist began her tour in Ballinspittle in Cork on the 3rd of June, her 33rd birthday and will run for 6 weeks. The last stop will be show number 33 in her hometown of Ballinasloe.

Next Thursday 3rd July at 8.30pm why not join the Ring of Gullion AONB Project and Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland for a picnic with a difference in Slieve Gullion Forest Park?
There will be a chance to watch and listen for bats and moths in this brilliant venue for wildlife! Catherine Bertrand, Senior Regional Officer for Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland will be the moth and bath expert, who will provide a short talk on both, in Slieve Gullion Playpark's new outdoor classroom (just above the adult fitness area).
Therese Hamill, Ring of Gullion AONB Officer said, “We are delighted to provide people with a chance to learn more about the creatures of the night in the Ring of Gullion. It also gives the project the chance to use the new outdoor classroom in the playpark in Slieve Gullion.”
Therese added “There will a short walk in the woodlands to search for the elusive bat with special bat monitors and at the same time we will try and lure the bat's prey - moths, into special moth traps.” There will be some moth traps available to families on the night, to take home and try out in their own garden. Returning the next morning to Slieve Gullion, to uncover what was found in the night! It's a great chance for all the family to have a close encounter with wildlife! Booking is essential and attendees are asked to please bring sturdy footwear, a small picnic, warm clothing and a torch.

Kildare Native Michael English Brings His Brand New Country Music Dance Band To The Mourne Country Hotel in Newry on Friday July 5th.
Michael is a well-established singer, songwriter and performer, known for his musical diversity and his great ability to capture an audience. Now, he is rapidly becoming one of Country Music’s best Dance Bands gaining fans throughout Ireland and further afield.
Michaels “Beat” is becoming very popular amongst the dancers and his great range of country songs both old and new caters for all.

On Thursday the 20th of November the Canal Court Hotel & Spa will host a unique opportunity to spend some time in the presence of Ireland's legendary broadcaster Mr Gay Byrne, as he reminisces about his life and times in a live performance.

Newry's very first festival of traditional and folk music takes place in the city next month and it will highlight the massive talent of our homegrown musicians in over 30 venues throughout the city. As part if the festival The 4 of Us will play their first gig back in Newry Town Hall in 25 years!
Iur Cinn Fleadh runs from Friday the 12th to Sunday the 14th of September and with over 70 gigs happening in more than 30 venues it’s extremely unlikely the “buzz” won’t be noticed by residents and visitors alike! The Fleadh promises the best in home grown folk and trad talent with a little bit of rock and roll and country thrown in for good measure. Síoda, Claire and Ursula Byrne, The Rooneys, Mary O’Neill, Warrenpoint Comhaltas, Cup O’Joe, Oscail, Brandé, All Folked Up, Martha Guiney Band and many many more will perform in the City’s bars, cafes and streets and even on board a tall ship.
As part of the Fleadh, 25 Years after it all began, Newry’s favourite sons of rock The 4 of Us play a return concert to Newry Town Hall on Saturday the 13th. Members of the current band and the original will all be on the Town Hall Stage. This will be the third and final time all the members of both the original and current line-ups will play together. Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council Darie Hughes said that it is so exciting to see so many events happening in Newry during the first Iur Cinn Fleadh and hopes that this is the start of many more in the future.
Quirkier events include Bluegrass and Gypsy Jazz band Cup O’Joe made up of brothers, Benjamin (20) who plays Upright Bass and Reuben (18) Guitar and Mandolin and sister Tabitha (15) Banjo and Fiddle who will join the Riverside Choir at Riverside Church at 6.30pm on Friday night for a session to remember.
Trad music will be wafting through the air when tall ship Soteria sets sail from the Albert Basin at 7pm on the Friday and Saturday nights for a two hour trip up the Canal.
Sunday from 5pm sees an evening of Céilí and Set Dancing at Newry Town Hall with The Mournes Céilí Band while earlier in the weekend members of U3A are holding a Ceili and Old Tyme Tea Dance in the Canal Court at 2pm on Friday.
Newry Historical Tours will be taking you on a tour around the city, with musical interludes provided by David Cunningham and sure why not sing a wee song yourself!
Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail are offering a free one day Liofa Intensive Irish Course from 10am on Saturday. Also on Saturday there’s Street Theatre from Newpoint Players at Marcus Square and on the path across from the Canal Court Hotel from 2pm. There are also Currach trips on the Albert Basin from 3pm.
Dominic Kirwan plays Newry Town Hall on the Friday night at 8pm for the Country Music fans.
If you are musical and not just a listener make sure you enter the competition for the Newry.ie Best Street Session on Saturday at 12pm in Hill Street where there is £100 up for grabs for the winner.
