Newry Art Society is holding it’s Annual Winter Exhibition throughout November in The Bell Gallery, Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry.
The Exhibition opens on Friday the 5th of November, at 7.30pm and will continue during Arts Centre opening hours until Friday the 28th of November.
Everyone is welcome.
The Art Society Artists will be showing a wide variety of painting styles from landscape to portraits to abstract and much more with most of the paintings available for purchase.
There really will be something of interest for everyone so make sure you get along at some stage over the month

Over the summer Newry and Mourne Museum commissioned local photographer Christina Joyce to photograph war memorials, headstones and rolls of honour in the Newry and Mourne area.
During November 2014 Newry and Mourne Museum will post information onto its Facebook page on the 32 First World War graves located in the Newry and Mourne District Council area, as well as three with Newry connections buried in Poyntzpass.

As it is a public page you do not need to be a member of Facebook to view the postings.
The postings highlight the personal stories of these individuals, their backgrounds, who they were, where they were from and how they died. Many died in military hospitals whilst being treated for their wounds, while others were victims of the flu pandemic that developed as the conflict drew to a close.
The graves reflect both the local impact of the war, as well as its historical significance. They are located in a mixture of Catholic, Church of Ireland and Presbyterian graveyards.
At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Both Nationalist and Unionist leaders initially supported the war and men of the north and south, from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds, enlisted. It is believed that 210,000 Irishmen served in the British forces during the First World War, while many others of Irish descent served with the forces of other Commonwealth nations or those of America. An estimated 50,000 Irishmen died in the war.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has the task of maintaining the graves of the 1,700,000 Commonwealth men and women who died during the two world wars. It also holds, and updates, an extensive and accessible records archive which is available online at www.cwgc.org. The Commission cares for cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in 153 countries across the world. While its work in the countries that saw the worst of the fighting is well known, it is less commonly recognised that of the 23,000 cemeteries and burial plots over half are to be found in the United Kingdom. Across the island of Ireland there are more than 5,500 Commonwealth war dead buried or commemorated at more than 1,000 burial grounds or churchyards.
Within the parliamentary constituency of Newry and Mourne there are 93 Commonwealth Graves (63 for the First World War and 30 for the Second World War) which are spread across 37 sites and in the South Down parliamentary constituency there are 81 graves (48 for the First World War and 33 for the Second World War) spread across 41 sites.
Newry and Mourne Museum is free to visit and is open 7 days a week (Monday-Saturday 10am-4:30 pm and Sunday 1:30pm-5pm). Its current temporary exhibition on the “Local Impacts of the First World War” will be on display until May 2015.

Cuan Mhuire Newry are hosting a Christmas Craft Fayre & Bazaar on Saturday 6th December and Sr Consilio, residents Management, and staff have extended an invitation to all to come along and enjoy the day.
Cuan Mhuire was founded by Sr Consilio Fitzgerald and is currently Ireland’s largest voluntary provider of support and rehabilitation treatment for individuals suffering from addiction and other related issues,

Newry Museum are holding two events to mark International Women's Day. International Women’s Day is held annually on 8th March to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations.
On Friday 6th March (10am – 4pm) there will be a mini-conference and period fashion show. In the morning various speakers will explore aspects of the role of Irish women in the First World War and the impact the war had on the lives of children. Topics to be covered include women and nationalism, women and unionism, women and the Easter Rising, women and suffrage, women as nurses, and women on the home front. In the afternoon, the period fashion show will give a glimpse into how women’s fashion changed from the late nineteenth century through to the aftermath of the First World War.
Then on Sunday 8th March (2pm – 4pm) there will be a screening of a black and white film (PG) from 1939. The film will tell the story of Nurse Edith Cavell, who was executed for helping refugees and Prisoners of War escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War. The film screening will be preceded by a talk given by the Museum’s First World War Project Officer, who will recount how Newry lady, Ada Bodart, assisted Cavell and almost suffered the same fate.
Both events are FREE of charge and refreshments will be provided. They are open to men and women. As numbers are limited, and also for catering purposes, places must be pre-booked. A White Collar Boxing Event this Saturday night 28th of February at the Carrickdale Hotel promises To Be a Great Night of Sport.
A team from South Armagh will battle it out with a team from Louth in the White Collar Boxing Fight Night.
The event starts at 8pm and admission is £10.
The Carl Frampton fight will be live on the Big Screen and this will add to what should be a great atmosphere.
Sinn Féins Conor Murphy and Gerry Adams both attended the recent launch. Conor Murphy thanked everyone involved who was helping organise the event and he praised all those involved in the promotion and development of the sport of boxing for their commitment to in particular the health and wellbeing of the young people of the area

Margaret Comer, author of 'Saint Mary's and its People' will give an interesting talk on Saint Mary's Graveyard in Newry's Gaeláras, 6b Chapel Street, on Wednesday 11th March at 7.30pm.
Voluntary donations will go to the Saint Mary's Restoration Fund as part of Newry Parish's fundraising drive.
Saint Mary's graveyard of course is the last resting place of poets, prelates, politicians, publicans, pioneers and of course the general populace of the town - indeed many Newry families have a connection with the graveyard.
The talk is sure to be intriguing agus cuirfear fáilte roimh chách le cupán tae.

The 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Newry has many many more events than ever and is gearing up to be the largest ever St Patrick's Festival in the city.
Events begin next Tuesday the 3rd of March and run right through till your shamrock is well and truly drowned on St Patrick's night.
This year’s festival has been jointly organised by Newry & Mourne District Council and Newry City Centre Management. The emphasis for this year’s celebrations is “Celebrating Friendships in the Community” ‘/ Ag Ceiliúradh Cairdis sa Phobal’ and the highlight of the entire festival will no doubt be the annual St Patrick's Day Parade at noon on the 17th March as well as an open air concert and sessions everywhere.
Speaking at the press launch Mayor Dáire Hughes stated that it gives him great pleasure to presents the 2015 progamme of events for the forthcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and extends a warm and open invitation to everyone across the greater Newry & Mourne area to come along and be a part of a truly memorable family fun day out and celebrate our national Saints day in true Newry fashion. Mayor Hughes thanked the Quays Shopping & Leisure Centre and Bellini’s for sponsoring this year’s event and their continued contribution towards the celebrations.
The fun will commence with the St. Patrick’s Day parade at 12:00noon at the Quays Shopping & Leisure Centre travelling onto Buttercrane Quay, Francis Street, Patrick Street, Monaghan Street, Merchants Quay, Sugar Island, Kildare Street and finishing in heart of the Cathedral Quarter in Hill Street. (Vehicular floats dispersal along The Mall). The spectacular street parade is the focal part of the day’s celebrations and promises to have a true carnival atmosphere and a showcase event with something for everyone. The parade with be led by Mayor Dáire Hughes accompanied Autism Mum’s and followed by an array of amazing parade entertainment from a cavalcade of floats, walking participants, marching bands, stilt-walkers, balloon modelling, mix and mingle of street theatre, juggling and uni-cycling with abundance of cartoon characters.
The entertainment will continue to the main Events Space in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter in Hill Street. Compere Gene Fitzpatrick is one of the most sought-after comperes and after dinner speakers and is described as the ‘Man for all occasions’. Gene will ensure that all visitors on the day will leave their sides sore with laughter as he introduces various well know acts during the day.

Newry Chamber Music are presenting a concert on Tuesday the 31st of March in Newry Cathedral in aid of little Patrick Jackson and the Tree of Hope charity.
They will be performing Haydn’s Easter masterpiece ‘The Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross’ for String Quartet.
This is a wonderful, poignant and reflective piece of music depicting the final moments of the life of Christ. It will be accompanied by readings and a set of poems written by Mark Strand which were written especially to accompany the piece.
The concert is in aid of The Tree of Hope Charity a charity that is dedicated to raising money for sick children.
On this occasion they are hoping to raise funds to support Baby Patrick Jackson and his family. Patrick was born in August 2014 and suffered severe brain damage at birth.

Mum is so determined to keep up appearances that when Dad leaves her ‘to find himself’, she hires an actor to replace him. It's a perfect solution to an embarrassing situation, as long as she uses her imagination to find the extra cash. Mum’s the word. Luckily, the daughter’s far too busy planning the happiest day of her life to notice, but the son smells so many rats he's a loose cannon who must be kept behind closed doors. Will keeping the cat in the bag and the skeletons in the cupboard whilst avoiding the elephant in the room tip them all over the edge? Or is it the best move she's ever made...
It is an absurdist comedy about a family where denial is an extreme sport, reality a distant planet and even the furniture has episodes. Think Spike Milligan meets the Royle family, meets Ionesco in this hilariously funny, sometimes dark show.
