If you feel like a nostalgic trip down memory lane to check out the people and places of your youth - or your parents youth, there will be no better place than Bellinis next month when a DVD of old photographs from our city will be launched.
Well known local Facebook page Old Pictures and Videos of Newry (and surrounding areas) are hosting 'A Stroll through Old Newry" on Friday the 26th of July in Bellinis with the night is in aid of PIPS Newry and Mourne. Admission is by donation and doors open 9pm.
The compilers will launch their DVD on the night and it will be on sale for £10 with all proceeds going to PIPS.
Following the launch music will be provided by Johnny Starr.

Youth Fest NI is back in Kilbroney Forest Park, Rostrevor on Saturday the 6th of July and this year they have pulled out all the stops to bring a range of never before seen events to Kilbroney Park.
The festival, which drew over 2,000 people last year is designed specifically for young people and offers everything from cultural workshops to live music designed to entertain all the family. This year the festival will be even bigger and better…
The organising committee are delighted to announce that this year's festival will welcome a host of well known names including the award winning Phil's Farm, Cloughmor Extreme, Gathering Drums and local company Funhouse Events who have recently won Family Visitor Attraction of the Year 2013. The festival will also be complimented by a live stage where local performers Anna Mae Ryan and Harrison Tweed among others who have battled it out in the festival's “Battle of The Bands” competition will get the opportunity to showcase their talent.
Chairperson, Mark Gibbons is very excited about the return of the festival and the new events which they now have on board. Speaking to the editor, he commented,
“We are delighted to be bringing a range of new activities and events to Youth Fest NI 2013. As we have almost doubled the festival in size we will be introducing a small entry fee of £1 per person to ensure that the festival can reach its full potential and go ahead for the second year in a row. These funds will cover the cost of the festival with any additional proceeds being donated to local charity the Southern Area Hospice. For just £1 you will be given access to the festival grounds and its facilities for the entire day with a host of exclusive events, workshops and local performers available throughout the park. Times are very hard and without these funds Youth Fest would simply not be possible so we would appreciate the support of everyone who came out to enjoy the festival last year.
“We also have a very special mystery event which we are really excited about because it has not been seen in Newry and Mourne for a number of years! If you want to find out what it is please come along and see what all the fuss is about!
“I would like to thank the local council for granting us the full use of the park grounds this year and all of the local businesses who have very kindly supported us. As the festival is completely free we rely heavily on local sponsorship and fundraising so I urge local businesses and individuals who can support us in any way to contact the committee. As the festival attracts young people from tots to teens and their families it is an excellent opportunity for local companies to promote themselves on a highly targeted platform.”

Newry Museum will host arts and craft summer workshops for children from the 29th of July until the 2nd of August.
The Workshops are inspired by the Museum’s main and temporary exhibitions.
Over the five days the children will have fun creating their own historical masterpieces while learning about life in Ireland, from the Vikings to World War Two.
They will make their own weapons and pendants, treasure chests, write secret messages in invisible ink and build their own theatre, complete with a cast of puppets and even meet characters from history!
The workshops will take place from 11.am – 1pm.
You can pay a daily rate of £2.50 or £10 for all five. Numbers are limited to 20 and children must be aged 7 and older.
Parents are encouraged to stay, but it is not essential. Children must be dressed for mess. If you wish to book or you require more information please telephone 028 3031 3178.
Commenting on the week’s activities Noreen Cunningham, Museum Curator said, “The children will create unique pieces of art inspired by the rich heritage of Newry and Mourne that is on display, including the new temporary exhibition The Performing Arts in Newry and Mourne”.

This years IWAI Bath-Tub race will be held on Newry Canal on Sunday the First of September so now is the time to get that glamorous contraption buoyancy tested!
IWAI have teamed up with Abbey Event Management who are organising events for Newry’s City Day in September and the Bath-tub will now be held along with the city triathlon on Sunday 1st September.
A Spokesperson for the IWAI Newry and Portadown Branch said "We are pleased with this outcome as the triathlon is also focussed on using the canal facilities that exist with the swim taking place in the Albert Basin. Businesses and individuals are welcome to participate in the raft race as usual."
The IWAI Surefreight trophy will be awarded to the senior winners with the McCrum cup for juniors and Courtney’s Restaurants will provide the trophy for the best dressed entry.

Newry's Eariwig Festival kicks off tonight with an opening parade starting from the North Street Car Park at 6.30 making it's way to Kilmorey Park. The Festival returned last year after an absence of many years and this year the organiser plan to have it bigger and better than ever.
Live music will feature prominently and will include performances from The Xceptions, Michael Buble Tribute Peter Kierhey, 18 Arches, The Shout, Green Envy, Teen Spiirt, Room 4s, Gary Carroll Youth Street Rage, Waiting for the Weekend, Catalyst, Seamy and Corrina and Silvers got Strings.

JLS will take to the stage tomorrow night at Pairc Esler for their eagerly anticipated concert which marks the beginning of the end for band members JB, Marvin, Oritse and Aston who announced in April they were splitting up after their 2013 tour.
Newry based Abbey Event Management who are promoting the concert have produced quite a coup bringing the band to the small city of Newry considering JLS have sold many million songs including over a million copies of their self titled JLS debut album.
The band who play as part of the World Police and Fire Games competition will be joined tomorrow night by Microlip, Keywest, Electric Lemon and Jordan O'Keefe who proved so popular at the recent Newphonic concert amongst others. The concert will raise funds for the NI Cancer fund for Children.

With the sheer depth of events on this weekend in the Newry area and surrounds you would be forgiven for thinking that this Bank Holiday Weekend applies to our side of the border as well!
Cabaret, Salsa, Reggae, Trad - and that's all on Friday night and you haven't even made it to Tanglewood yet!
The JLS Concert may be taking place tonight but that only marks the beginning of a frenzy of events so if you are on holidays, what a weekend to be off. Even if you are working sure a sore head and aching body on Monday or Tuesday morning wouldn't be too bad!
King of the happenings has to be the Tanglewood Music Festival at Narrow Water Castle with around 50 different bands and DJ's on offer. The festival starts on Saturday and runs till Sunday with Camping facilities available if you buy a weekend ticket at the bargain price of £35. Where else would you get top notch entertainment and crack for a full weekend at such a reasonable price.
Tanglewood has four stages with the Main Stage on Saturday hosting Cross Eyed Mary, The Blues Katz, More than Conquerers, NI Soul Troop, Hurdles, Hologram, Freedom 35's, Young Aviators, Gama Bomb and And So I Watch You From Afar.
The Gramophone Tent which could well be our favourite on Saturday hosts Brendan Monaghan, Feargal Murphy, The Wolf is In, Amy Ryan, Comedy Hour, Donal Scullion, Burlesque Belles and Suitcase Suzy while on Sunday there's The Shout, Pete Keighrey, The Split Lips, Silvers got Strings, Gentry Morris, Mickey Murphy and Kaz Hawkins.
The Spirit Store Boat Stage on Saturday hosts 2 Minutes 2 Midnight, Richard Richard, Anti Depressants, Tyrannasonic Deaf Rays, the incredible Duke Special, Rams Pocket Radio, Proudfoot and Pocket Billiards while on Sunday there is Grainne Duffy, Eric Bell, Cold Porter, Barley Mob and the excellent Mundy.
Finally the Riff Raff Tent will entertain you on Saturday with Almost DJ's, Greg McIlherron, Gerard 12, In Progress, El Barbaro, David and Leah Lyttle, Rigsy, ISO Disco, Nitemode, Psycatron, Japanese Popstars and DJ Woody and MC Homecut while on Sunday it's Audacity, JBR Project, Rastachaun, El Barbaro, Daft as Punk and Miniminds.

If Tanglewood is a little noisy take a run up to Kilbroney Forrest Park for the World Police and Fire Games Mountain Biking competitions running on Saturday from 10 and on Sunday from 11.30. Watch Police and Fire officers from around the world compete at the Kilbroney Park trails. Admission is free!
On Friday night Chill out at the Cabaret Supper Club in The Bank Bar from 7.30pm with Brian Weir and The Burlesque Belles £25 including meal and cocktail and if you're fit to dance after that head across the road to the Tropical Party which will be in full swing over two rooms at the Phoenix Bar with free admission.
Afterwards if you are still fit to string a sentence together in English there is a good chance that you will also be able to manage it in Irish so take a wee walk down to the Railway Bar on Monaghan Street for Oíche Airneáin where you can finish the night off listening to the trad vibes from le Bothán, free admission.
Saturday night bop to the Professionals at Millers at the Canal Court, dance to Stephen Smyth at the Mourne Country, go to Passion at Bellinis, see Charolotte from Geordie Shore at BED or visit many of the other events on in local bars around the City.
On Sunday the Maiden of the Mournes begins proper with the Festival Parade from 3pm followed by numerous events and sure why not finish the night with some Jazz in Cafe Brass or live vibes in The Bridge Bar.
It really is a jam packed weekend of entertainment and we haven't even mentioned the Cornamuckley Donkey Derby on Friday and Saturday, the All Ireland Poc Fada on Saturday in the Cooleys and the Chuck Mallon Festival which opens in Meigh on Sunday.

The full line up has been confirmed for the 2013 Pride in Newry post-parade open-air concert which takes place on Saturday the 31st of August at McClelland Park, Catherine Street in Newry.
Presented by the fantastic Lady Portia Di Monte, and Headlined by Rainbow Flag Flying SCOOCH of Eurovision fame, the concert will include The Diva Dolls, Graciano Major, Bjorn Identity, Debbie Bradley as Lady GaGa, Paula K as Katy Perry, Alecia Kar as Pink, Jessie K, Rayanna, DJ Marko Gallagher, DJ Dion Conlon, Rusty Hinges, Caolán Dooley and Orlaigh Comer.
The concert will take place at 3pm following the Parade which will start at the top of Monaghan Street at 2pm and follow the same route as last year!
If you are participating in the parade, or want to be on the NRC Passion Float, you need to be at Catherine Street / Upper Edward Street by 1:30pm.

Guitarists Mickey Murphy, Newry; Pat Coldrick, Dublin and Thomas Leeb Austria are getting together for what should be an incredible night of music at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre on Wednesday the 23rd of October at 8pm.
Thomas Leeb picked up the guitar for the same reason as every thirteen-year-old boy: he wanted to meet girls. He soon fell in love with the instrument, played his first solo concert at the age of fifteen and released his first acoustic guitar album at seventeen.
Leeb is a frequent performer at concerts and festivals in Asia, the Americas and Europe and has been featured in numerous guitar magazines all over the world. Every year, he teaches workshops and master classes in universities and colleges and his album “Desert Pirate” was voted one of the essential albums of the last twenty years by Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
His peculiar guitar style owes as much to percussive techniques as traditional fingerstyle guitar. What sets Thomas Leeb apart from some of his contemporaries is his ability to make pyrotechnics serve the music and three years studying West African traditional music give him a sense of timing and groove that is unusual in a guitarist.
All this has earned him a loyal world-wide following and influential fans such as Eric Roche who was his guitar teacher, “for about five minutes and then I heard him play”, Jon Gomm awarded him “ten out of ten Gomms” and Guthrie Govan who thinks that “what Thomas does on an acoustic guitar probably shouldn’t be legal.”

Mickey Murphy is a fingerstyle guitarist from Co. Down, N. Ireland and his solo performances contain a rich blend of original compositions with arrangements of popular songs, jazz standards and Irish traditional favourites. He regularly performs at clubs and festivals in Ireland and has also played in England, Scotland, France, Austria and Italy and plays his first German shows this year.
2011 marked the release of Mickey’s first solo album ‘Turais’ which has received many great reviews and lots of radio plays and he plans to release a follow up album in 2014.
He has worked alongside many of the world’s leading acoustic artists including Tony McManus, Thomas Leeb, Paul Brady, Horslips, Phil Coulter, Don Ross, Kieran Halpin, Jacques Stotzem and Beppe Gambetta.

Pat Coldrick is ultimately a classical guitarist but not in the sense that you or I think classical, he has taken this genre to another level altogether. While Pat plays his own great arrangements of modern pieces such as Desperado and Classical Gas, and huge classics like Asturias and Danza Paraguaya, the love songs like A Time For Us and Autumn Leaves, it is Pats own compositions that set him miles apart.
