At 6 feet 2 inches tall Sacred Heart boxer, Conor Wallace cuts an impressive figure. The likeable Newry lad is current All Ireland U18 Middleweight Boxing Champion, a title he recently won at the National Stadium in Dublin. Wallace won his title a year young which means he is eligible to defend his crown next year as he still falls in the age category of U18.
The Saint Colman’s student will take a break from his Design, Technology and Construction studies and his part time work at Good to Go in Sugar Island tomorrow Tuesday the 18th of June when he heads off to the Brandenburg Cup in Germany as part of a six man Irish squad who will fight against Europe’s elite U18 boxers over a five day period.
Wallace who quotes Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux as his biggest idol along with Welsh hero Joe Calzaghe is totally focused on the job in hand at the Brandenburg Cup and he knows that an impressive display in Germany will certainly help his chances of a place in the Irish team that will fly to Rotterdam in Holland for the European Youth Championships in August.
Training for Wallace has been stepped up and includes a 6 mile early morning run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday followed by a short strength and conditioning workout with current Queensland and Asia Pacific Welterweight Champion Patrick Murphy. Tuesday and Thursday mornings also begin early with a high intensity sprint based running session at the Saint Colman’s track. Every evening the Sacred Heart boy works out in the gym and the ring with his long time coaches Owen Murphy and Seamus McCormack before heading to Dublin on a Saturday for a day long session with the Irish squad.
Busy times indeed for Wallace who hopes his dedication and commitment which began at the age of 10 and includes All Ireland Titles at age 11 (44kgs) and age 15 (63kgs) will fulfil his long term dream of representing Ireland in a future Olympic Games.
