Newry 2’s 6-4 North Down 2’s

Newry reached the final of the McClements cup after an enthralling 6-4 win over North Down on Saturday.  They will now face Annadale in the final on May 7th at Stormont.

Newry started the better of the sides with plenty of possession but it was the visitors who took the lead with a counter attack after catching Newry sleeping in defence.  Their lead was short lived as David England got the equalizer straight away with a great reverse stick shot.  It was England who got Newry’s second only a matter of minutes later to give them the lead.

North’ got back on level terms with their next attack in this end to end game.  Newry went ahead again when Kris Fletcher picked out a great pass to David Andrews at the back post who deflected the ball into the net.  There was still time for North to get level again before the break to leave the score 3-3 at half time.

Newry flew out of the traps in the second half and regained the lead again with Dale Pollock flicking the ball over the keeper after his initial shot had been saved.  As ever North Down did not give up and got the equaliser through a short corner.  The game was flowing end to end with chances being created with every attack.  Newry were next to score with Andrew Marks shovelling the ball over the line after a goal mouth scramble.  The game was then put to bed when Newry were awarded a penalty stroke with David England stopping up to slot the ball home to complete his hat trick and book Newry a place in the cup final

Newry Olympics 1 Saintfield 1st XI  2

On Friday 11th March 2016, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Saintfield 1st XI Ladies at home in the Senior 3 league at 8.00 p.m.  Saintfield started by sending the ball straight back into the their own defence and started to play up their right hand side.  Newry mids pressed the Saintfield players breaking down their play and tackled hard winning the ball back.  Switching the ball back to defence Newry’s sweeper Abbie Blakely hit the ball back up through to the mids Laura Girvan and Kathryn Baird and then on to forwards Laverne Inns and Aimee Magowan who tried to win a corner within the first ten minutes of play.  Saintfield’s keeper blocked every attempt to score by Newry and took their hit outs with speed keeping the ball in continuous play.  It was around the 20 minute point when Newry drove the ball hard from the right defence player Diane McMinn-Johnston through to the midfield players Lynne Ervine and Lynn Anderson who then switched the ball to right mid Kathryn Baird and on passing the ball to right wing Aimee Magowan Newry won their first corner.  Lynn Anderson hit the ball straight at the Saintfield goal but unfortunately the shot was saved.  Saintfield hit back hard and on a break drove the ball back up the pitch forcing the Newry keeper to come out to the edge of the circle to save the ball but subsequently Saintfield were awarded a corner and scored on the rebound just before the half-time point.

At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong with continuous fast play for the first twenty minutes and thanks to the ongoing effort of mids Nicola Shields and Suzy Rollins Newry, were awarded three consecutive short corners but Saintfield kept the ball out from the back of their net.   Newry kept the pressure on with some hard hits down the line from defence Avril Harpur and Alison Gamble and were awarded another corner at the 33 minute point from which Captain, Laverne Inns was awarded a flick and scored for Newry.  This was the final match of the league for Newry who hope to finish around 8th place overall in this new Senior 3 league.  Next Saturday they will play Dungannon at home at 2.30 in the Plate.
