Write a commentSouth Armagh based Cathal Fegan Schools of Taekwondo took the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships in Brighton by storm in July, coming home with an unbelievable 40 medals including 9 Gold, 13 Silver and 18 Bronze.
The group returned home to Silverbridge to a hero's welcome last week with congratulations coming in from many local representatives.
MLA Megan Fearon congratulated Cathal Fegan saying “Cathal’s Tae Kwon Do school in South Armagh continues to go from strength to strength but this must surely be their greatest victory to date,”
“Not only was it an incredible achievement bringing the first ever all-Ireland team to the World Championships but to return home with 40 medals is just outstanding.
“When I met some of the members of the group at a grading in Ti Chulainn last year I was hugely impressed by them. While I am absolutely delighted with what they have achieved, having seen them in action I am not at all surprised.
“The entire team is an absolute credit to themselves, their families and their area; they should be very proud of their achievements, South Armagh certainly is.”
Councillor Terry Hearty also offered his congratulations to the group calling them nothing short of inspirational. “They have not just won a remarkable haul of medals here; they have sent a message out to all the young people in the area, boys and girls, that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
“They have been fantastic ambassadors for South Armagh and the entire area is very very proud of them."
Newry Cllr Kevin McAteer a former student added his congratulations “I would like to commend Cathal, Tanya and everyone else at Cathal Fegans schools of Tae Kwon Do for their massive success. It shows that the hard work everyone has been putting into the clubs over the years has paid off.
"As a former student I have seen first hand the hard work everyone puts into the clubs and it comes as no surprise that they have been so successful. Roll on the next tournament so they can add more medals to their tally.”
