Kilkeel 1’s 3-1 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Kilkeel in this rearranged fixture due to flood light failure. The sides were evenly matched for long periods of the game but Kilkeel eventually ran out winners. Both sides were trying to work each other out early in the game, neither side able to find the break through as their defences stubbed out any opportunities. Kilkeel however did find a break through when a great piece of solo work saw them go one up with 20 minutes gone. The lead was short lived as Newry equalised within 3 minutes when Colin McKnight slotted home a short corner. The score remained 1-1 at half time.
Kilkeel scored early on in the second half with a back post deflection resulting from poor Newry defending. Newry pressed forward looking for the equaliser and came close on a number of occasions, but as in recent weeks, the finishing did not match the build-up play. As the game wore on Newry were pushing further up the pitch leaving space at the back for Kilkeel to use on the counter attack. With 4 minutes reaming the home side got their third after Newry were caught with too many men up the pitch to put the game to bed.

Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 2 – Derg Valley Ladies 2nd XI 1
On Saturday 13th January Newry travelled to Derg Valley in the Junior 8A Ulster League. Within the first three minutes from a short corner, centre forward Laverne Inns hit the ball to Kathryn Baird who deflected the ball into the Derg goal to put Newry into the lead. Derg Valley fought back but goal keeper Colette Lambe was in great form in the Newry goal making sure that all shots on were covered. Sweeper Laura Simpson ensured that the hits out from the back found Newry centre back Gayle Davidson who passed the ball over to left back Victoria Lewis who drove the ball up the left hand side to Shannen Robinson. The ball was passed to centre forward Laverne who switched the ball over to Rachel Lockhart in left mid who slapped the ball straight into the Derg goal putting Newry into a 2 nil lead. Derg Valley fought back hard and keeping the pressure on Newry until half time where the score was Newry 2 Derg Valley 1.
The second half continued in the same vain as the first however Newry had more possession of the ball with several shots on goal and numerous corners. Derg Valley were awarded one corner but failed to score. At the final whistle Newry won the match 2-1. Player of the match Claire Gamble.

Senior Ladies Return from China
Late last Thursday night our senior ladies and their mentors returned from their trip of lifetime to China. By all accounts they had a brilliant trip which saw them visit many sights throughout the country - Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Great Wall of China, The Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium, The 3 Gorges Dam, a boat trip on the Yangtze River. The trip also saw the girls take part in Chinese lessons and give some basic GAA coaching at the Hubei Normal University and Huangshi Number 8 Middle School.
The club were given a fantastic opportunity to experience China and its incredible history, culture, language, geography and thriving contemporary society and along the way they made some life-long friendships, unforgettable memories and forged a strong bond between our Irish and Chinese cultures.
The club would like to thank Hubei Normal University, Confucius Institute, Yan, Sean, Michael, Alex, Mary, Nancy, Matilda, Ivan, Jack and Billy for making the trip such a memorable experience for all who travelled.
Before travelling to China, the Confucius Institute based in the Ulster University, knew the Shane’s girls would be excellent ambassadors but they surpassed all expectations as magnificent representatives for club, family, community, county and indeed our entire country.
Senior Men
Last Monday night saw our senior men begin their pre-season training under the watchful eye of new manager Kelly O’Rourke. The lads also trained on Friday night with great numbers attending both sessions and the mood is good as everyone looks forward to the new season.

Our underage training schedule is still to be finalised but hopefully it should be available from next week onwards.

Best wishes to our club member and underage manager Bob Mathers who was involved in a nasty road traffic accident recently.

NICS 1’s 4-3 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Stormont on Saturday in their first game of the new year to face Civil Service. Newry started well and were one up within 3 minutes when Kris Fletcher broke forward with the ball committing the keeper before slipping the ball to Alex Irwin who slapped it home into the empty net. Five minutes later and it was two, this time Robert Irwin broke forward from midfield before beating two men on the edge of the circle and firing a fierce low shot past the keeper. Civil Service pushed forward forcing a number of short corners and their pressure paid off as they pulled one back after picking up a rebound from a short corner. Newry regained their two goal advantage when David England found himself in the Service circle and was able to dig out a reverse stick shot which slipped through the keepers pads.

After the break Service really pushed forward and got another goal back with a back post tap in five minutes into the second half. Newry were struggling to put together any sustained possession and were being forced back. Service got back on level terms with 15 minutes remaining when they took a quick free catching the Newry defence out of position and making them pay. Newry started to get forward after the equaliser and were unlucky not to take the lead again when Kris Fletcher seen his effort rebound off the post and another shot from David Andrews flash narrowly wide. Service however still had more in the tank and forced another short corner reacting quickest to the rebound to get their forth a seal the win.

Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 1 – CI Ladies 0
The Newry Ladies where off to a great start with a 1-0 win when they played their first match of 2018 against CI on Saturday 6th January.
Newry started well and were controlling much of the opening play forcing a number of short corners. As the half wore on CI grew into the game and soon won a penalty corner on the break but Newrys defence quickly cleared the ball preventing them from scoring. There was some great play by both teams, each having numerous opportunities in the circle. However Newry was soon to change the score line when right winger Aimee Magowan drove the ball into the circle and won a penalty corner as the ball bounced of one of CIs players feet. The ball was injected out by captain Kathryn Baird to Suzanne Rollins at the top of the circle who took a shot on goal but was deflected off the keeper to Baird at left post who popped the ball in the net. The score line remained 1-0 to Newry at halftime.
During the second half Newry continued to keep the pressure on CI with some great play by forwards Shannen Robinson and Rollins. Newry won a number of penalty corners during the second half but with great defending by the CI keeper and defence Newry were unable to add to the score line.
Newry fought hard to prevent CI from equalizing and at the final whistle the score was 1-0 to Newry.

Newry City Manager Darren Mullen has welcomed former Armagh City and Lurgan Celtic player Dara Noonan to the club for 2018.

“I’m delighted to welcome Dara to the club. He’s a player we’ve known about for a few years and comes with plenty of experience at this level. We’ve been lacking players in the defensive area due to injuries and although our defence has been superb this season it’s an area that needed to be strengthened. Dara fits the profile of what we are looking for and at only 23 I’m hoping his best years are in a Newry jersey. He’s also another local lad and I’m sure will fit easily into our squad.”
Dara commented,“I am delighted to sign for Newry, its a brilliant set up at The Showgrounds and the club has a very loyal following. Having played with Armagh City & Lurgan Celtic I know what it takes in this league but with the strong squad Darren has set up I think Newry are more than capable. Being local and having played against them I know the Newry players and that will help me settling in, it’s a matter of knuckling down and fighting for my place. There’s no stand out team in this league and we will soon move into the post split phase. There’s maybe still a wee bit of work to do to make sure we make that split and then its all to play for. I’ll be doing my very best to contribute to that.”
Shane O’Neill’s Ladies Senior Football Team are on their way to China later this month but before they head away Councillor Roisin Mulgrew, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council hosted a reception for them in the District Council Offices, Monaghan Row, Newry.

The team will spend two weeks in China from 29 December until 11 January.
The 26 players and 4 mentors, have been invited to visit China to demonstrate and coach Gaelic Football. The trip is facilitated and funded through the Confucius, a branch of the Chinese Ministry of Education Institute, based in University of Ulster, Jordanstown. This visit is classed as an academic and cultural exchange under the Study in China programme.
Wishing the team every success on the visit, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “This will be a historic and unique opportunity to promote sport and traditions. It also represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience and learn so much of this rich culture and fascinating country”.
Weston HC 1’s 0-3 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Dublin to play Weston in their rearranged Irish Hockey Trophy game.
Right from the start Newry pressed high up the pitch forcing the home side into long hopeful balls which were easily intercepted by the Newry defence and midfield. Weston were being pinned back but Newry could not force any real saves from the keeper. As the pressure built Weston were starting to put in a few rash challenges having two men sin binned in the first half.

Neil McKnight took a gamble after intercepting a pass and drove forward with the ball beating 2 defenders before laying the ball back into the circle for Mathew Russell to finish. Newry forced a number of other good chances from short corners but the keeper reacted well and made saves from David England and Mathew Russell.
In the second half Weston came out stronger looking to get back on level terms, however Newry weathered the early storm before starting to create a few opportunities themselves. Keith Mcwilliams was unlucky not to score when he broke forward however his shot slipped past the wrong side of the post. Weston again pushed forward forcing a few short corners but were unable to convert. Newry broke on the counter attack, when Colin McKnight picked out Kris Fletcher high up the pitch Fletcher fires in a wicked cross for Russell to pick up and slide under the keeper. Newry were picking their way through the Weston defence and creating opportunities and with 5 minutes remaining they got their third through a short corner when David England played the ball into the back post for Jeremy Greer to deflect in and confirm the win for Newry.
