Newry 1’s 1-3 Bangor 1’s
Newry hosted league leaders Bangor on Saturday in a must win game before the league split. Bangor started well seeing plenty of the ball, however it was Newry who had the first of the chances with a shot from Greer being saved 15 minutes in. Bangor made Newry pay and scored from a penalty corner with a high drag flick. Newry fought back into the game and had a number of short corners but were unable make them count with the Bangor keeper saving from Mathew Russell and David Andrews. Bangor made it two before the break with a simple tap in at the back post.

In the second half Newry again pushed forward and had a number of opportunities to score but came up against a resolute Bangor defence. However they did pull one back after a scramble in the middle of the circle saw Mathew Russell force the ball over the line. Newry continued to try and get back on level terms but with 6 minutes remaining Bangor scored their third to put the game out of reach. Newry 7-0 Newcastle
On Wednesday 7th February Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies played their closes league rivals, Newcastle. Newry won the toss, selecting pass back and battled hard from the outset. Newcastle were no mean feat and fought back at every opportunity. Fifteen minutes into the game Newry Captain Kathryn Baird played the ball up the line to right wing Stephanie Smart who crossed the ball into the circle allowing centre forward Laverne Inns to slip the ball passed the keeper putting Newry into the lead. Five minutes later Rachel Lockhart, centre mid drove up the middle of the pitch, smashed the ball into the circle enabling Inns to score again. Newry coach, Jeremy Greer, began to use their 15 strong squad to roll on and roll off in order to keep up the fast pace of the game and just before the half–time whistle Newry were awarded their first corner at which centre forward Suzy Rollins hit the ball to Captain Baird who deflected the ball into the Newcastle goal securing a third goal for Newry. At half-time the score was three nil to Newry.
From the start of the second half Newcastle were on the attack and within five minutes were awarded a corner but failed to score. However Newry retaliated and within the first twenty minutes Newcastle sustained lot of pressure to their defence allowing right wing Smart to score the fourth. Shannen Robinson, left wing then drove the ball into the Newcastle defence scoring two in a row with Baird sealing the deal with the seventh goal just before the final whistle. Newry retain their lead at the top of the Junior 8 A league. Players of the match were Kathryn Baird and Rachel Lockhart.

Newry 1’s 3-2 South Antrim 1’s
Newry hosted South Antrim on Saturday in a must win game if they wanted to keep alive the chances of finishing in the top half of the table before the league split. The home side started well forcing a number of short corners early on but were unable to make them count. South Antrim started to grow into the game as the first half wore one and took the lead through a well worked short corner. Newry got back on level terms within five minutes when Jeremy Greer was taking out by the South goal keeper and a penalty flick was awarded which David England slotted home. The teams went in level at half time.

In the second half Newry were slow to start and again South Antrim scored with a carbon copy of their short corner they scored in the first half to go 2-1 up. This seemed to spare Newry on as they began to force South back, creating more in attack. However, the games flow was halted a number of times as the umpires brandished a number of cards to both sides throughout the half. Newry got back on level terms when Robbie Irwin picked out Keith McWilliams in the circle who swivelled on the ball and fired the ball home on his reverse side past the advancing keeper.
Newry were still on top but time was running out as they mounted their last few attacks. The game was stopped with only 30 seconds remaining due to a head injury right on the South Antrim bye line. When the game was restarted Greer managed to get the ball into the circle past 2 South Players to Colin McKnight who’s shot was stopped by a defender’s foot. The final whistle was blown as Newry were lining up to take the resulting short corner. With Everyone up, David England’s initial shot was saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell back to England who quickly manoeuvred the ball onto his reverse side and struck a ferocious shot which flew into the bottom left corner to give Newry the latest of late victories. Newry will now host league leaders Bangor on Tuesday evening in the hope of an upset.
Team: Beck, J. Greer, D. England, D. Hogg, A. Baird, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, C. Henning, M. Russell, C. McKnight, K. Fletcher, A. Irwin, D. Andrews, M. McCullough, K. McWilliams
Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 3 – Saintfield Ladies 1
On Saturday 3rd February 2018, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI travelled to Wellington College to play Saintfield in their latest league match. Newry chose to wear red, sporting their new Canal Court Hotel & Spa sponsored playing tops. For the first twenty minutes both teams fought hard and with very little space being afforded which saw few clear cut chances.
Newry were first to secure a short corner thanks to the skills of left wing Shannen Robinson and although no goal was scored Newry were awarded a long corner which was taken quickly by centre mid Rachael Lockhart. Newry kept possession and switched the ball right across the Saintfield defence where Captain, Kathryn Baird flicked the ball to right wing Stephanie Smart. Sweeper Laura Simpson’s dummy run for the ball drew off four of the Saintfield mid players allowing Stephanie to dodge the Saintfield backs bringing the ball into the circle passing the ball to centre forward Laverne Inns. Laverne reverse slapped the ball across to left mid Suzy Rollins who quickly seized the opportunity in front of the Saintfield goal and slammed the ball hard to the right of the Saintfield keeper putting Newry into a one nil lead. Within minutes Saintfield were quick to retaliate and were in the Newry circle, trying to score but goal keeper Collette Lambe kept the goal covered and right back Becky Murdock was quick to tackle and cleared the ball to centre back Gayle Davidson. Gayle then switched the ball across the pitch to Victoria Lewis on the left. Newry played wide with some beautiful skills shown in the midfield by Suzanne and Rachael reaching the forwards Newry were soon to win yet another penalty corner for Newry. Suzanne Rollins executed the corner with extreme precision finding Captain Kathryn Baird on the post who deflected the ball into the Saintfield goal putting Newry into a two nil lead just before the half time whistle.
During the second half Newry continued to keep the pressure on Saintfield, both teams fighting hard and marking each other at all times and through great team effort Suzanne Rollins took another short corner switching the ball to Kathryn Baird who scored her second goal of the match. Saintfield continued to push forward to try and get back into the game and ten minutes before the final whistle scored from a short corner making the final score three one to Newry. Newry would like to wish Saintfield all the best as the foundations for their new pitch begin this week.
Team: K Baird (Captain), C Lambe, S Rollins, L Simpson, G Davidson, V Lewis, R Murdock, R Lockhart, S Robinson, L Inns, S Smart.

Newry 1’s 2-2 Portadown 1’s
Newry hosted Portadown on Saturday in their second game this week which ended in a thrilling and hard fought 2-2 draw.
Newry took the lead early in the game when Greer pushed forward from defence and drove into the circle and pulled the ball back from the bye line which Alex Irwin slotted home. Portadown stepped up a gear and started to push forward without causing Beck too many problems in the Newry goals. It could have very easily been three nil to Newry when they had to more opportunities to increase their lead but just could not apply the final touches. Mark McCullough came close from a Keith McWilliams cross and then McWilliams skimmed the post with a reverse stick shot with the keeper rooted to the spot. Portadown got back on level terms when they broke through the middle of the pitch and found a spare man at the back post who easily fired his shot home.

Portadown started bright in the second half and put Newry under pressure, Beck saving well from two short corners before a mistake in defence let them take the lead. Newry were reduced to 8 men with two quick fire yellow cards for David Hogg and Neil McKnight and a green for Robert Irwin. The home side somehow managed to keep Portadown at bay during this period and when they were back to full strength got back on level terms with Colin McKnight firing home a ferocious low shot from a short corner. Newry finished the better of the two sides and could have nicked it at the end but again McWilliams seen his chance just slide down the wrong side of the post and Colin Hennings fierce shot from the top of the circle was saved well by the keeper.
Team: Beck, J. Greer, D. England, D. Hogg, A. Baird, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, C. Henning, C. McKnight, M. Russell, A. Irwin, M. McCullough, N. Davenport, K. McWilliams
Newry 1’s 6-1 Raphoe 1’s
Raphoe made the long trek from Donegal to Newry on Tuesday night and came away on the wrong side of a 6-1 score line. Newry were in top gear right from the start, pinning the visitors back who were unable to get out of their own half. The pressure paid off and with only 5 minutes gone Kris Fletcher got his first of the game with a stunning reverse stick finish which rocketed into the top corner. Within two minutes it was two nil when Fletcher turned provider and he laid the ball in to Colin McKnight who finished well from the top of the circle. The chances were coming thick and fast for Newry and it was three when McWilliams scored with another reverse stick shot from the left hand side of the circle.
Raphoe started well in the second half and with a change in tactics, were pushing forward trying to get back into the game, and they did manage to get one back. However it wasn’t long before Newry got another when Mathew Russell’s short corner was blocked on the line by a Raphoe defenders knee. Colin McKnight stepped up and slotted home for his second of the game. Mathew Russell got in on the act when he got Newry’s 5th when Fletcher played the ball to him in the middle of the circle and he fired home. There was still time for one more when Greer got to the bye line and Fletcher finished first time with a low shot to make it 6-1.
Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 2 – Mossley 0
On Saturday 27th January Newry Ladies, sporting their new kits, sponsored by the Canal Court Hotel faced Mossley in the Quarter finals of the Ulster Hockey Minor Cup. Newry dominated this encounter for long periods as they bossed the possession and chances created. Mossley were stubborn in defence as Newry were kept at bay by some great defending and saves from the visiting keeper. The home side did eventually get the break through however when they went one up with a great team goal as centre back, Gayle Davison made the switch across to Becky Murdock on the right who flicked the ball through to Captain Kathryn Baird, and with some beautiful one two's with centre mid Rachael Lockhart, the ball quickly found the Newry right wing Aimee Magowan. With the support of Suzy Rollins in the centre drawing off the Mossley defense, Aimee drove the ball right across the goal to find Shannen Robinson on the left wing who slipped the ball into the net putting Newry into the lead. Newry kept up the attack and within another ten minutes Lisa Gamble came on to left back and played the ball right up to left mid Katie McCullough who took another shot at the Mossley goal. Newry kept up the pressure winning a number of corners and felt comfortable making a number of roll on roll off substitutions to keep the pace up and the pressure on the Mossley side. At half time the score remained Newry one Mossley nil.
During the second half Newry became more confident just missing out on a number of corners but kept Mossley on their toes with constant possession of the ball. At the twenty minute point Newry had taken the ball round the back to right back Ruth Ferris who passed the ball up through the right hand side to Aimee Magowan winning another corner for Newry. Kathryn Baird injected the ball to Laverne Inns at the top of the circle who hit the ball to the left hand side of the Mossley keeper to have Kathryn finish by deflecting the ball into the goal. Newry were now in a two nil lead and retained the score until the final whistle putting them through to the semi finals of the Ulster Hockey Minor Cup. Player of the match went to Rachael Lockhart.
Team: NOHC Ladies: C Lambe, K Baird (Captain), L Simpson, G Davidson, L Gamble, C Gamble, R Ferris, B Murdock, R Lockhart, K McCullough, S Robinson, S Rollins, L Inns, A Magowan
Senior Men
Sunday afternoon saw our senior men lose out by two points to Killanny from Monaghan in a very competitive opening fixture in the Ulster Intermediate league, 1 – 10 to 0 – 11.
Played in very testing conditions Killanny were first on the scoreboard with a close-range point before Neil Paul Lennon pointed for the Shanes from a placed ball. A Kristian Magill free nudged his side ahead but Killanny replied with a pointed free of their own before Magill slotted over another placed ball to put the Shanes one in front again. Two points in a row from the away side, both from play, some them go into the half-time interval leading by a point, 0 – 4 to 0 – 3.

The Shanes made the better start to the second-half with Michael McParland firing over to bring to the sides level before David McCabe pointed for the home side to edge them in front. Three points on the trot from Killanny saw them lead by two but the Shanes replied with three points of their own, two great long-range efforts from Connaire Mackin and good score from Kristian Magill, to put them one to the good once more. A Killanny free levelled proceedings before they registered the only goal the game to give them a three-point advantage. The sides then swapped points with Connaire Mackin on target again before points from Micheál Brady and Kristian Magill brought the Camlough side back to within one. The Shanes had a couple chances to equalise but it was Killanny who got the last point of the game to claim the win by two, 1 – 10 to 0 – 11.
Despite the defeat the Shanes can take a lot of positives from the game including the return of Paddy Gregory, Neil Paul Lennon, Kristian Magill, Conor O’Neill and Conor Ruddy to the senior ranks and an impressive senior debut from young Patrick Garvey. The game itself proved to be a useful workout for the lads in a very competitive environment. Next up is an away game next Sunday, 4th February against Cavan side, Laragh United at 12 noon.

North East Mugendo (Forkhill, Lordship & Newry) Kickboxing Students travelled to Cookstown last weekend to take part in the M.A.I (Mugendo Association of Ireland) black belt grading weekend. After attaining their second brown belts students are eligible to be nominated for their first Degree black belt. After nomination they must attend a Summer seminar (which took place in Sligo last year) and a two day grading weekend in January.

The students Paula Murchan (Forkhill), twin brothers Connor and Glenn Murphy (Lordship), Katelyn Cumiskey (Lordship), Dylan Murphy (who frequents Forkhill, Lordship & Newry) all performed very well in their first degree grading while Sensei Pierce McGeough (Newry) also successfully completed his second degree. The average time to get to a black belt in the M.A.I system is about 10 years continued training. The grading took part over two days where the students had to perform syllabus work which accumulated over their martial arts lifetime.
M.A.I has seven clubs throughout Ireland. Bodyshots (Newtownabby), Champions (Larne), Cookstown Mugendo (Cookstown), North East Mugendo - (Forkhill, Lordship & Newry) and Sligo Mugendo (Sligo). These clubs come together multiple times throughout the year to host gradings, seminars and the Mugendo Open kickboxing championships. As part of their training students must have first aid, complete a referees course, senior students must also complete a child protection course, an IMAC level 1 coaching course in kickboxing and complete Irish Garda Vetting.
If you would like to try kickboxing at any of our clubs contact Sensei Pierce McGeough on 07547786810 or checkout our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/north.east.mugendo.kickboxing
