Representatives from local sports associations attended the latest Shared Areas presentation at St Joseph’s Boys’ HS, Newry to lend their continuing support to the community based, sports redevelopment project.

In his address, project coordinator Brendan Fearon highlight the collective benefits that the project would have for the wider community, in particular for the youth, the elderly and local sports groups. After thanking those present for their ongoing contributions, Mr Fearon made reference to over fifty local groups who are positively championing the sports redevelopment initiative commenting, ‘The scale of support towards the Shared Areas project is extraordinary and it is a testament to the community-wide endorsement that the momentum for the initiative continues to grow. In essence, these planned facilities will ensure that St Joseph’s remains an integral hub of the community by permitting as many people as possible to avail of much needed health and fitness resources.’ The proposed facilities will include a 3G football pitch, interior and exterior climbing walls, external gym equipment, fitness suite and cycle provision.
As a past pupil of St Joseph’s, Banjo Bannon spoke passionately of his commitment to the project adding ‘St Joseph’s has always championed the belief that everyone can play an active role in society and no one should be denied an opportunity to better themselves because of financial restrictions. Furthermore, the school itself is strategically located in an ideal position to attract wide-spread use of the climbing walls since no other such facility exists in the stretch between Belfast and Dublin.’
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Derek Rocks from St John Bosco GFC said ‘There is a long pedigree of positive partnerships between the Bosco and St Joseph’s over many years, and we are delighted to once again support such a significant project that will help redevelop the local area and provide such a range of key facilities. We feel that these future resources will permit many sports clubs to actively retain the talent and capability of young players for a longer period of time so that they can enjoy the positive experiences of sport more effectively.’

Newry & Mourne Area Community Development Office, Mrs Cathy Magee explained that ‘The Shared Areas project has the potential to allow everyone throughout the community to actively engage in life improving activities, in particular the older members of our community. These facilities are urgently needed for many people in rural areas and I’m delighted that they have been factored so positively in the extensive planning process.’
Mr Anthony Marron from Midway FC commented that ‘Midway is supporting the sports project 100%. Shared Areas is doing something that should have been done twenty years ago by listening to the community, working with the community and supporting the needs of the community. We know that there is a great need in the area to provide better soccer facilities, particularly at under age level, and it is truly commendable that the interest of community groups lies at the heart of these proposed facilities.’
Reflecting on the 3G proposals, Leigh Sillery from the Irish FA explained that ‘the IFA has identified six long term objectives as part of its Strategic Plan including creating a healthy domestic game at all levels, building a culture of lifelong participation in football and reaching beyond the game through the power of football for health, education and social development. The Shared Areas project clearly dovetails with these strategic objectives and I’m delighted to see such a proactive approach to addressing grassroots development in the area, with such widespread support from local clubs’

Thomas Davis GFC 2-13 Pearse Og’s II 1-3
Friday 23rd May 2014

Friday night in the now more familiar surroundings of St. Colman’s College, Thomas Davis continued on their winning ways with a comprehensive victory over Pearse Og’s.
From the thrown in the men from West-Newry showed their intend by a great catch by David Lenaghan who fed Daniel Hughes who unfortunately put it wide. However, almost immediately Dingo Hughes had the first score on the board with a point after 2minutes. One minute later D. Hughes fed Danny Cinnamond who blasted the ball to the back of the Og’s net for a 1-1 to no score lead. A free from L. Quinn and a 45m from K. Kimmins stretched the lead further. A fine point by C. Trainor was followed up by another 45m by K. Kimmins on the 17minute. When Liam Quinn was fouled it was Karl Kimmins who pointed the free. On the 29th minute of the first half Liam Quinn pointed another free after D. Hughes was hauled down. Going into injury time Thomas Davis were keeping their opponents scoreless, but the men from Armagh City finally pointed in the 34minute.
On the resumption The Newry side added to their intensity with a quick point through D. Hughes and a pointed 21m free from L. Quinn after Danny Cinnamond was fouled. The Og’s responded with two points in a row. Further point from D. Hughes and C. Trainor pushed Corrinshego on. The Og’s to their credit kept attacking and were rewarded with a goal to reduce their deficit . P. Finnegan replaced J, King and almost immediately got on the score-sheet with a well taken goal. A. McCourt replaced J. Mc Ilroy who shipped a very high challenge .As the game meandered to a conclusion, Thomas Davis finished with points from J. Dinsmore and D. Hughes who was fed by super-sub Nathan Burns. Overall this was a fine win, were each and every member of the panel played their part. Next week we face the might of St. Patrick’s Cullyhanna.

It's that time of the year again when the children soon leave school for the summer holidays and Newry and Mourne District Council in partnership with local clubs, groups, community associations, national governing bodies and Active Community Coaches have just launched its 2014 Summer Sports Camp at Kilbroney Forest Park.

It is bigger and more varied than ever before, which means the Sports Development Committee has again increased what is arguably the largest participatory summer coaching scheme in Northern Ireland.
55 courses, 23 sports and an expected 5000 young people will attend the coaching schemes right across the district. The new and exciting addition to the Programme this year is Disc Golf or Frisbee Golf. This is our first scheme that is aimed at families as well as individuals. Mr Garry Parr from Disc Golf NI thanked the Council not only for including and promoting his sport, but for the use of Kilbroney Forest Park which is an ideal venue for the scheme and a major Council facility.
The Summer Schemes are open to young people from Newry and Mourne and start from Monday 30th June. They include; Angling, Basketball, Camogie, Curragh Boating, Gaelic Football, Golf, Disc Golf, Hockey, Hurling, Mountain Biking, Outdoor Education, Soccer, Street Dance Drama, Irish dancing, Dedicated Special Needs Summer Schemes, Special Needs and advanced Kayaking, and Tennis. All schemes are for boys and girls of all abilities and are set at affordable rates.
Mr Hugh Murphy, Chairperson of the Newry and Mourne District Council Sports Development Committee, took this opportunity to wish all who take part in the programme an enjoyable, active, and safe summer.
Mrs Ciara Lowe said she was looking forward to the summer of sport ahead with the Mountain Bike Championships on the 19th and 20th July in Kilbroney, the International Curragh Championships due to be hosted in Warrenpoint on the 15th, 16th and 17th August and the Water Festival to be held at the Albert Basin on the 30th and 31st August. The water festival is a joint project between Dromalane / Quayside Close Community Association and the Council where young people can enjoy Kayaking, Banana Boating, Canoeing and Currachs in the water just in front of the Quays Shopping Centre. She hoped that by having these and other minority sports included in the Council’s Summer Scheme Programme that this would encourage young people to participate in new challenges.
The Mayor, Cllr. Mickey Ruane congratulated the Sports Development Committee, Mrs Ciara Lowe, Mr Dermot Russell and all the Sports Clubs and Coaches involved in putting this wonderful programme together. He hoped that it would be the start of a lifetime of sport for all the young people who participate and in particular he welcomed the challenge of new sports such as Disc Golf.

Around a Pound sponsored Michael Dunlop joined legendary names Giacomo Agostini, Stanley Woods, Rob Fisher and Ian Lougher on 10 wins when he led the second Monster Energy Supersport TT race from start to finish today at the Isle of Man TT.

Riding his own MD Racing Honda, Dunlop gradually reeled in Bruce Anstey, who started ten seconds in front of him on the road, and the pair circulated together for the second half of the race, the gap at the end 10.089s as the Kiwi, in a display of sportsmanchip, let Michael take the chequered flag first. William Dunlop took third on the Tyco Suzuki.
The trend for the 4-lap was set from the off with the two Dunlop brothers and Anstey spilt by just a second at Glen Helen with Dean Harrison only a tenth of a second back in fourth. The early sensation of the race was privateer Ivan Lintin in fifth. Two early contenders were reported as retired on the opening lap - Ian Hutchinson at Glen Darragh Road and Conor Cummins at the Highlander.
Michael was able to eke out a slight lead by Ramsey, the gap to Anstey clocked as two seconds as William slipped back to third albeit only half a second adrift of the Valvoline Racing/Padgetts Honda. Harrison was a further two seconds back with Lintin maintaining his fifth place ahead of Australian Josh Brookes and Northern Ireland racer Lee Johnston.
An opening lap of 126.256mph gave Dunlop a lead of 4.5s over Anstey with the top four remaining the same. Brookes overhauled Lintin with Guy Martin, Keith Amor, James Hillier and Russ Mountford, another privateer having a great ride, in tenth. Michael Rutter was an early visitor to the pits though as he made adjustments to the Smiths Triumph.
Dunlop had the magnets on Anstey and he was getting closer and closer to his back wheel, the gap at Glen Helen on corrected time second time around 6.9s and by Ramsey, he was with him. With his lead up to nine seconds, he could now afford to sit with Anstey for the remainder of the race.
The 25-year old completed the second lap at 127.403mph, the fastest lap of the race, with the official margin to Bruce 9.36s. William Dunlop was six seconds back in third but was looking more secure in the position as Harrison was now also six seconds behind. Brookes and Lintin continued to hold station in fifth and sixth.
There was little change over the remaining two laps as the leading contenders were all secure in their positions but there was drama on the final lap when Brookes and Lee Johnston, holding onto fifth and seventh respectively at Ramsey on the final lap, went out after an incident at Creg ny Baa, fortunately both escaping injury.
At the head of the field though, there were no such problems and with Anstey showing great sportsmanship in allowing Dunlop to cross the line first, he took his third win of the week, and tenth in total, ahead of Anstey and brother William.
Harrison took another good fourth place finish with James Hillier enjoying a better race in fifth, eleven seconds clear of Keith Amor who made steady progression up the leaderboard throughout the race.
Lintin took seventh, and was comfortably the first privateer home, with Dan Kneen, Dan Stewart and Guy Martin filling the remaining top ten positions.
The results mean Michael Dunlop is now a clear leader in the Joey Dunlop TT Championship on 91 points followed by Anstey (69) and Harrison (54). Anstey needs to win Friday's Senior to have any chance of overhauling Dunlop. Lintin’s second maximum haul of points has seen edge closer to the TT Privateer’s Championship as he’s moved on to a total of 81 points – only second placed Russ Mountford (64) can now overhaul him.
Bosco player stars in Down Tyrone game

James Boyle St John Bosco U12 and St Patrick’s Primary School star played at half time in the Cumann na Bunscol team in the recent Down vs. Tyrone match in Pairc Esler.
Whilst the Down team couldn’t find the net on that occasion James had no such bother and with a perfectly measured left foot lob dropped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Playing in front of a crowd of 20,000 fans James was unfazed and had a great game ending up scoring 1:01 for his team.
St John Bosco U14 Girls
Monday 26th May 2014 Bosco u14s defeat RGU Downpatrick
The u14 girls got back to league duty on Monday after a five week gap and had a comprehensive victory over the visitors from RGU Downpatrick. First half goals from Orlagh Burke and Aine McCabe together with well taken points from Nicola Downey, Aoibheann Quinn and Treasa McKinley established a comfortable lead at the break.
RGU rallied briefly at the start of the second half but the Bosco girls continued their scoring with further points from Aoibheann Quinn and an excellent goal from Aiofe Magee.
The new midfield pairing of Tara Mallon and Orlagh Burke were excellent and overall this was a great performance from the entire panel.
The u14s are now away to Dundrum on Sunday 1st June at 3.00pm before a home game on 8th June with Teconnaught.
St John Bosco U12 Girls
The under 12 girls will travel to the annual Warrenpoint Tournament on Saturday 31st May to compete with 5 other teams from the local area. The entire panel of 20 will take part in what promises to be a great day for all involved.
St John Bosco U12s
St John Bosco U12 vs Rostrevor Jack Mackin Park Sunday 2nd June
Truly a game of 2 halves – Bosco scoring 3:05 in the first half, keeping Rostrevor scoreless and then failing to register a single score in the 2nd half whilst Rostrevor clocked up 5 points.
Whilst Bosco were playing with the wind at their backs in the first 20 minutes this was not a real contributory factor. The Bosco lads were organised, fought well and took their scores well. Padraig Caldwell starting at full forward scored 2 opportunist goals from spilled balls with Ruarai O’Hare getting Bosco’s third goal with a wonderful shot from almost the half way line that went in over the Rostrevor keeper’s head. Points from Cal MacAnulty, Matthew Monroe, Jack O’Hare and Daniel Preece left the Bosco up by 14 points at the interval.
Rostrevor mentor Aidan Murdock sent out a different Rostrevor team in the second half and they scored 5 points to no response from Bosco. This was due to the Bosco lads losing their shape, poor shooting, going for goal too early and some wonderful saves from the Rostrevor keeper. In fact right at the end of the match Cailum Gray was through on goal and was pulled down. The referee immediately awarded Bosco a penalty and in keeping with the second half this shot went wide of the upright also.
Bosco with 18 players had a strong panel for this game and David McCreesh, Ryan Shields and Ethan McGibben starred in their first full game of the 2014 season.

Thomas Davis Corrinshego 0-14 - St. Patrick’s Cullyhanna 2-5
Thomas Davis continued in their winnings ways with a fine win over a very competitive Cullyhanna outfit, in the St. Colman’s playing facilities on Friday evening. The game was only a minute old when St Pats hit the top corner of the Corrinshego goal for a three point lead. Cullyhanna won the responding kickout and shot a wide. Things looked ominous for the West Newry men and a hammering looked a distinct possibility, but the men in maroon didn’t panic and Liam Quinn added a point after 2minutes. This was quickly followed by a fine D. Hughes point on 4minutes. Hughes added another point on 6minutes from a free. Thomas Davis now had the momentum and by the 9th minute Cathal Trainor had put them in the lead 0-4 to 1-0. St Pat’s responded with a point only for D. Hughes on 20mins equalising. The first half finished with a further St. Pat’s point to lead 1-3 – 0-5.
The second half started with determination and purpose from the West Newry men with L. Quinn pointing a free after Jordan King was upended. Two further pointed by C. Trainor strengthened the lead and by the 44minute D. Hughes extended the lead further. Both sides swapped points with Corrinshego scoring through J. King after being set up with a Ryan McWilliams hand-pass and then D. Hughes to leave the score 0-10 to 1-5. On the 50minute Thomas Davis were awarded a penalty and D. Hughes placed the ball over the bar to stretch the lead further. Lee Courtney was introduced as a sub on the 53minute for his first senior start in the Thomas Davis colours. Cullyhanna added a goal from a penalty and as the game came to the conclusion David Murphy added an insurance point for an 0-14 to 2-5 win. This was our second win on the row and Corrinshego’s fourth win of the campaign. Overall each and every player played their part in this hard earned win.

Forkhill v Thomas Davis
Thomas Davis Under 8’s returned to league action away at Forkhill last Wednesday night with 2 games against Forkhill A & Forkhill B. The first game was an even enough affair with both sides finding their feet. Our midfield duo of Shae Gray & Calum Bradley paved the way for the Thomas Davis squad with some excellent plays & scores showing great skill & determination throughout. In the forwards Thomas McCabe, Toni Fallone, Dylan Gray & Nela Lesniak all gained vital possession. In defence Rudi Fallone, Martin McKinley, Conall Havern & Shay Mallon all put in a shift to ensure we gained a share of the spoils.
After a hard earned break, we re-jigged the squad to play Forkhill B, the lessons from the previous game all stood to our lads as they hit some nice scores showing all the skills of the game, Ryan Bryne hit his first score with Comhghall Quinn & Katie O’Brien all working to ensure once again we gained a share of the spoils.

Forkhill v Thomas Davis
The young footballers of Thomas Davis gave a very good account in a battling and rather physical encounter. The game ebbed and flowed with some fantastic performances, most notably Siobhan McKinley, Caoimhe Mallon and Adam Travers. In fact this was probably the best game ever played by young Siobhan in a maroon jersey. Others who impressed were Eoghan Lenagh who gets better with each game and did very well in the second half when he replace Emmettt Dowdall in goals. Emmett Dowdall, Ciaran Higgins and Michael Mallon scored some good points and Gio Fallone making his competitive debut for Corrinshego had a fine catch in the second half. Danny Shields made some good runs into the heart of the Forkhill defence. Shaun Collins played a captain’s part by organising the full back line when under pressure. When moved to midfield in the second half C. Mackey played with great heart and conviction.

Missing two key players in Conor Loye and Caolan Flanagan These young troops started the game poorly allowing the opposition to storm into 0-09 to 0-01 lead with only 20 minutes played. However coach Hankin made the brave decision to sacrifice Midfielder Lee Courtney to full back to stop gap further widening, this proved a turning point. 2 well worked points just before halftime left the deficit to 6 points. A rallying call was made at halftime and what happened can only be described as good old fashioned team work and heart. Countless dirty ball, turnovers and simple scores the boys raced into a 4 point lead. With the the opposition full forward completely subdued our boys seemed to be in total control but for the highlight reel Declan Loye seemed to rise like a salmon catch the ball, dummy his man and goalkeeper before calmly placing ball into the bottom corner. It would be grossly unfair to single out a individual performance because these young men put in a stunning 2nd half performance winning 3-10 to 2-11.
