Cumann na mBunscol
U12 player Pól Óg MacCormac had the honour of turning out in the Down colours at half time in the Saturday night Down vs Louth national league game.
Persistent rain and a heavy pitch didn’t dampen the enthuasism of these young players as they relished playing front of a packed stand in Pairc Esler. The 18 young players were representing their clubs and were drawn from all over the county from Carryduff,

Nineteen new Armagh GAA referees have attended a recent refereeing conference in the Athletic Grounds in Armagh.
Tutoring at the conference were Henry McCloy, Paudie Hughes and Jim Burns, the Armagh Referee Administrator.
A Spokesperson for Armagh GAA said "Armagh County Board are delighted with this positive start to the new season and wish all the new and more seasoned referees the very best in their important work on behalf of GAA in County Armagh."

Local lad Cathal Clarke's racing season has gotten of to a great start scooping 2nd place in the annual Clann Eireann St.Patrick's day race in Derrymacash. Cathal is now part of the U18 FBD Irish Talent Team and studies at St Colman's.
Seventy riders took part in the 48 Mile race and on the 3rd lap Cathal, Jude Sands and 5 other riders rode across to 3 riders who broke clear on the 1st lap. This strong group settled at a 40 second gap but disaster struck when Jude was taken down with 4 others in the break on the 4th lap leaving Cathal in a 5 man break. However this group which contained 3 juniors just kept working and still had a slim 15 second advantage at the finish. Cathal was edged out by local lad Declan Mulholland in the final sprint to the checkered flag.

Great result for the 1st year junior. Newry Wheelers Gary Henning, Conor Curran and James Mulligan rode well throughout with young Mulligan putting in a gallant effort before being forced to pull out due to illness.
Great performance by Cathal at Boyne GP A3 Race.
Cathal Clarke takes 10 spot and 2nd Junior in the 75km Boyne race. With a strong field of 80 riders and a rolling course it was difficult for a break to establish early. However around 50k a group of 8 riders escaped with classy vet Sean Bracken the main man. Cathal and National Junior road race champion Finn Ryan got a good gap opened and stayed away for several miles but on the main Navan to Slane road the big bunch had too much power and reeled them back in.
However the 2 young guns were not giving up without a fight and although the 8 man break stayed away, the duo of Clarke and Ryan led home the bunch in a hectic bunch sprint.
Cormac Clarke - 3rd in Boyne GP

Cormac Clarke took 3rd in annual Boyne GP in Slane, Co Meath at the weekend.
The 100K race on the rolling roads around Navan and Slane. The race was fast and furious on dry roads but conditions were blustery.
Cormac was in several early breaks which were all dragged back by the 80 strong group of A1/A2 riders. However as often happens 2 riders Ryan Sherlock and Greg Swinnard were somehow allowed away building up a gap of over 1 minute.
Several attacks saw 4 more riders getting clear and they gained time rapidly as the bunch started playing about. By the start of the last lap the 2 leaders had 1 minute on the 4 chasers who had almost 1 minute on the peloton. Cormac soloed across the 1 minute gap catching them with just 2 km to the line.
After such a massive effort very few would have the legs to sprint but in the final burst Cormac took 3rd spot with ease to chalk up his first podium finish in 2014.
Womens Race

In the women’s race it was Newry Wheelers Kerri Campbell & Alwynne Shannon who represented the club well. The race was plagued with a few crashes however the ladies rode well throughout avoiding the crash with Kerri finishing in a respectable 10th position overall, the ladies racing well early on in the season.

U16 Girls
St John Bosco vs Rostrevor
The U16 girls earned a hard fought victory against Rostrevor in their league match played today in Jack Mackin Park with a scoreline of 3:06 to 2:06. The Rostrevor team pushed to the very end to level the match. The girls were 4 points to 1 down at half time but played an excellent second half with Sinead O'Hare and Aoife Jackson dominating midfield. The Bosco scorers were; Nicole Osborne 2:01; Dearbhala Quinn 1:03; Aoibheann Quinn 0:01; Sinead O'Hare 0:01
Shauna Hickey, Alex Shortall and Cliona Doherty defended resolutely in the game assisted by the Down County u16 goalkeeper Roisin Kelly. The team was also served well by five u14 players, Orlagh Burke, Aine McCabe, Sarah O’Hanlon, Rachel Hanna and Aoibheann Quinn who were excellent. Gaelic4Mothers Mud Run!
The Bosco Gaelic4Mothers travelled deep into the heart of County Down to take part in the 1st ever Aughlisnafinn Mud Run.
Mo Rooney and 17 of his very brave ladies endured what could be called Hell on Earth to complete the course but most important laughed the whole way round. From the very start the knee deep mud caught the team out with a few running shoes being temporarily lost but after some tightening of laces the team quickly moved on the scale a number of tricky obstacles and barriers.
The ladies laughter could be heard all around the course mainly directed at Mo who was being systematically targeted by his team and soon the Bosco G4M coach was weighing 4 stone heavier with the amount of muck and dirt he had gathered.
One of the highlights of the course was the tunnel slides into a freezing mud filled river which was quickly followed by 3 barrel dams in the same foul smelling water but everyone got over the obstacles without much bother. After a gruelling 45 minutes of running, wadding, crawling, jumping and fighting through the muck and dirt the Bosco team made it to the finish line slightly dirtier than when they started the run.
After a well-deserved hot shower and refreshments courtesy of the folks from the "Finn" the Bosco ladies made their way back to the Social Club for some much needed refreshments. Well done to Mo and his ladies and many thanks to Aughlisnafinn for their magnificent organisation.

Three Newry boys were among five selected to join the Swansea hopefuls at the Newry qualifier at the 3G Pitch at St Colmans Sports Complex recently

Young people from Newry & Mourne District were given the chance to showcase their soccer skills in a series of Street Striker challenges including free styling, target shooting using tyres/boxes, obstacle courses and 5-a-side matches
Newry & Mourne was a new venue this year and was one of a number taking part across the North including, Derry/Londonderry, Larne, Cookstown, North, South, East & West Belfast.
The cross community event is aimed at targeting young budding footballers aged between 14-17 years old and encourage youth from right across the political and religious spectrum.

Each qualifier kicked off with an educational workshop facilitated by local Irish League players, Stephen Garrett of Cliftonville and Michael Gault of Linfield who play for clubs across the religious divide. The workshops explore how cultural expression can be celebrated and embraced
Sinead O’Hanlon, Duty Manager at Newry 3G Pitch at St Colmans Sports Complex said ‘Newry & Mourne District Council was delighted to be selected as one of the venues for the Playball Street Striker project. The event was a great success and attracted a great selection of talented young local footballers to showcase their skills on the soccer pitch. This is the calibre of event we aspire to be running’.
