Driving through Armagh City today it just struck me how much we really need a proper Park in Newry or at least a wide open space where we can all congregate, eat ice cream and discus the meaning of life!
Armagh Mall today was bustling with people of all ages in the beautiful Spring sunshine, some were playing games, some taking part in sports and quite a lot just hanging around on the grass having the craic with their mates.
I know we can never have the equivalent of Armagh's Mall in Newry but surely we can move in the right direction. At present our parks like Heather Park and McClelland Park just don't capture the imagination and the only real place to sit about is down at the Albert Basin.
The Newry City Centre Masterplan caters for parks and open spaces where activities or concerts could be held but will we ever see these in our live time or our childrens lifetime? It all boils down to money I suppose.
Mind you Newry is not short of it's millionaires. What better way for them to put their mark on our city and leaving a lasting legacy for everyone by investing in the structures that we need.
In this new era when we all have discovered that it's not money that makes us happy, and shopping can only go so far to fulfill our social needs the time is ripe for making Newry a pleasant place to live with lots of open spaces and social interaction areas and get away from this glorified shopping centre theme which has blighted us for far too many years.
