Rifleman James Thompson (Machine gunner) 2nd Batt. Royal Irish Rifles recently wounded in action, has been transferred to 3rd Division (Base) Hospital Rouen. He is a son of Mr. John Thompson, Hill Street, Newry. “Jim’s” many friends in Newry sincerely hope that he will soon be all right again.
A well known Newry soldier, No 6199, Pte Joseph Lee, RIR’s, Maginnis Street, has been home on leave during the past few days. He was twice severely wounded in action and his son Tom is one of the youngest riflemen in his Majesty’s service.
Mrs Arthur Moore, who is in charge of the Service Relief Fund at Belgrade is a daughter-in-law of the Rev Wm Moore P.D., Newry. Her husband, Lieutenant Arthur Moore is at present on active service at the Dardanelles.
Mrs Larrissey of Kilmorey St, Newry received on last Wednesday morning a postal packet from her son, Thomas Larrissey, of H.M.S. ‘The Wolf.” The photograph speaks well for the condition of the gallant Newry man.
During the week Private J. Campbell, Royal Irish Fusiliers, obtained his discharge owing to his youth. His parents, reside at 4 Arthur Street, Newry, and one of his brothers died at Boulogne last May, as the result of wounds received in action. Another brother is serving in England in the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Corporal J.Bell, Irish Guards, formerly constable of the R.I.C at Rostrevor, writing to Constable Fitzpatrick, Hide Market Barracks, Newry states that Corporal John Regan, formerly of the Hide Market Barrack, Newry had that morning (16th October) been awarded the D.C.M for gallantry on the night of the 8th October. “This,” says Corporal Bell, “is the first honour for any of the 200, but I am sure that plenty will follow. John is in the best of health, and wishes to be remembered to all his friends in Newry, particularly yourself.”
NEWRY NURSE FOR MALTA
Miss Margaret Rafferty, second daughter of Mr Wm. Rafferty, Water Street, Newry, who a few weeks ago received a call from the War Office to hold herself in readiness to go out as a Queen Alexandra Nurse, is proceeding to Malta. She left Belfast on Wednesday night for Liverpool, and on Thursday sailed per the Mauritania for the sphere of duty.
