Following a recent incident where an elderly resident was phoned by a person who asked if she had a lifeline unit local crime prevention officers are reminding members of the public never to give out personal details over the phone to unsolicited callers.
When the resident confirmed this the caller told her that if she provided them with a cheque for £200, she would receive £2000 back. This was a scam.
You should never, ever confirm any personal details to unknown callers. If you are unsure of a caller or feel that something is not right then ask for details to ascertain their identity. Ask where they are phoning from, where they have got your details from and where they have obtained your telephone number. Ask them if there is a number you can phone them back on or if there is another representative from their company that you can contact.
Legitimate companies won’t have a problem with you calling them back. Never give your personal or bank details details over the phone to an unsolicited caller.
Police would encourage anyone who receives a call of this nature to terminate the call and contact police. If a caller display is available, note the incoming number and give it to police- this will help trace the origin of the call. Police can be contacted on 0845 600 8000.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an assault.
Around 11.30pm on Thursday, 6 December, a 38 year old man was attacked approaching a tunnel in Lower Water Street carpark.
Three males approached him and one of them punched the victim in the face. The victim sustained a cut to his face and bruising.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an incident of criminal damage in Windmill Road on Thursday, 13 December.
Some time between 5pm and 6.30pm the passenger and driver's window of a white Volkswagen Caddy van were smashed.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an incident of criminal damage in the New Street area.
Some time between 2pm and 5pm on Wednesday, 19 December, a white substance was poured over the bonnet of a blue Toyota Avensis car parked in the overflow car park in New Street, opposite the Court House.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following the theft from a car in Mount Pleasant.
Sometime between 11pm on Monday, 17 December and 7am on Tuesday, 18 December, a green coloured Rover 25, registration HCZ 9703 was entered and a car stereo, teddy and a number of pashmina scarves taken.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following a one vehicle collision on Carnagat Road.
Around 6.30pm on Saturday, 22 December, a silver Peugeot 306, travelling form the direction of Martins Lane toward Camlough Road, was in collision with a lamp post. The car landed on its roof and a male was seen getting out of the car and making off.

Officers in Newry arrested a 41 year old male on Saturday, 5 January after recovering a quantity of herbal cannabis. Around 1.15pm officers observed a male close to The Quays and stopped and searched him.
A bag of herbal cannabis was found on the ground close by. The man was arrested for possession of class B drugs and possession of class B drugs with intent to supply. He was later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police in Newry are investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious fire at a large shed, close to a house on Upper Kiln Street.
