A strong southerly breeze with a few intermittent showers could not dampen the spirits of the Newry Wheelers Club representation at the annual Traders Cup Race in Dundalk on Sunday last. Barry Convery got his racing season off to a good start finishing in a respectable 7th place overall narrowly missing a placing in the A3 Handicapped Race ( Top 6).
Commenting after the race Barry said ‘The A3 race got off to a speed start before settling down to a seven man group which worked well together before ending with a sprint finish, A hard days riding but I am happy with the result’
It was the A4 race where the Newry Wheelers Team work was evident, working together throughout, Kenny Bagnal showing strong leadership throughout. Paul Garvey, taking part in his first open race at the tender age of 46 proving that age is only a number if you put in the time and effort to training. He attacked a number of times throughout but was unfortunate in the end with only 500m to get caught in a crash with team mate Henry O’Neill who suffered a broken collar bone and dampening any hopes for taking part in next weeks John Haldane Memorial Race on the Dual Carriageway.
