Newry 1’s 2-0 QUB
Newry hosted Queens on Saturday in what everybody knew was going to be a tough game and a potential banana skin on their pursuit of promotion.
Newry started well and had plenty of possession however their touch in front of goal was missing on a number of occasions. The Queens keeper was having a brilliant game and was playing like a sweeper at times cutting out a number of dangerous Newry crosses. However he was beat midway through the first half when David England fired home a short corner to ease some Newry nerves.
In the second half Newry continued to press forward looking for the all-important second goal which veteran Richard Nummy supplied from a short corner with a low flick into the corner. Newry still pressed forward but were pinned back from time to time by a pacey Queens attack. However Newry kept a clean sheet and now have five games remaining to try and gain promotion.

Newry Ladies 3-0 Donaghadee Ladies
On Saturday 18th January 2014, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Donaghadee 1st XI Ladies at home in the Senior 4 league. Donaghadee won the toss and chose the pass back sending the ball straight back into the Donaghadee defence and started to play up their right hand side. Newry mids pressed the Donaghadee players breaking down their play and tackled hard winning the ball back. Switching the ball back to defence Newry’s sweeper drove the ball back up through to the forwards who won a corner within the first ten minutes of play. Donaghadee’s keeper blocked every attempt to score by Newry and took their hit outs with speed keeping the ball in continuous play. It wasn’t until the 27 minute point when Newry drove the ball hard from the right defence through to the midfield and on crossing the ball to left wing Kathryn Baird, she picked the ball in the circle and on her reverse hit the ball straight into the Donaghadee goal putting Newry finally into a one nil lead just before half time. Donaghadee hit back hard and on a break drove the ball back up the pitch forcing the Newry keeper to save just at the half-time point.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong in continuous rain and dropping temperatures and after fifteen minutes of play Newry were awarded three consecutive short corners with centre forward Laverne Inns scoring a second goal on the third occasion Newry kept the pressure on and were awarded another corner at the 30 minute point from which right wing Laura Girvan scored putting Newry securely into a 3 nil lead.

Newry Olympics 0 South Antrim 0
On Saturday, 25th January, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played South Antrim1st XI Ladies away at Friends, Lisburn. From the whistle, South Antrim were on the attack but Newry defended well to keep the home side at bay. Newry managed to come into the game more as the half wore on and were awarded a number of short corners but could not convert their chances. The weather conditions were bad causing issues wth the players footing on the slippery surface.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out totally drenched, cold but were determined and South Antrim were awarded two short corners in the first fifteen minutes of the second half but were unable to score due to the Newry keeper and defence doing some fine saves. South Antrim were awarded a flick but sent it wide of the goal. Newry battled back and were awarded four consecutive corners but were unable to find the back of the net.

Newry 1's 9-0 Cliftonville 1's
Newry hosted bottom of the league Cliftonville on Saturday with five games left in their league campaign. The league leaders found it hard to break down the Cliftonville defence early on as they bossed possession but were wasteful in front of goal. It took a bit of luck to put Newry ahead when Robert Irwin managed to bundled a short corner over the line after coming off the post man's thigh. Richard Nummy got his first of the day with 10 minutes left in the first half and quickly added his second not long after to give Newry a commanding 3-0 half time lead.
Newry played a lot better in the second half as the weather worsened. Keith McWilliams got in on the act with a simple tap in at the back post only a matter of minutes into the second period. The fifth came when David England fired home a great low drag flick before a great team goal which saw a number of fast and neat one two's starting in the right back position and ended with McWilliams slotting home his second. Richard Nummy then stepped up a gear late in the match firing home 3 more goals to bring his tally for the game to five and end the rout.
Newry next travel to QUB on Tuesday night followed by Campbellians next Saturday in two must win games in their pursuit for promotion.

Armagh left it late in Drogheda to get a draw over Louth in the Allianz National Football League opening round today.
A game that lacked sparkle from Armagh suddenly lit up after an injury to Aiden Forker caused several minutes of delay resulting in Aiden being stretchered off the field. Perhaps allowing the visitors to compose themselves as an immediate goal attempt by Stefan Campbell was finished off by Aiden's brother Stefan scarcely before Aiden was out of sight.
There followed a point each from Tony Kernan, Stefan Campbell and Kernan was there again to score the final point of the game to level the match.
Final Score Armagh 1:13 Down 0:16
Down also finished with a draw against Monaghan at the rescheduled game in Pairc Esler in Newry today. Half time it was Monaghan 0:10 Down 0:4
Conor Maginn’s goal for Down in the 40th minute started a return to form, taking the score to Down 1:5 Monaghan 0:12 with points from Conor Garvey, Eoin McCartan, Donal O’Hare and Jerome Johnston ensuring it finished even in Newry.
Final score Down 1:11 Monaghan 0:14

QUB 1's 0-3 Newry 1's
Newry travelled to the Dub on Tuesday evening in their midweek game versus Queens needing a win to keep their promotion bid alive. Newry started well against the young and enthusiastic Queens team but were wasteful in front of goal. Colin McKnight had two chances in the first ten minutes at the front post to put the visitors ahead but was unable to find the target on either occasion. He made up for this though soon after when he fired home a short corner to put Newry ahead. Their lead was soon doubled soon after when after a short corner broke down David England rifled a shot which may have been going wide, however John Taylor deflected it goal wards to give Newry a two goal cushion at the half time mark. Newry started sloppily in the second half which brought Queens back into the game which seen them have a shot cleared off the line by captain Colin Henning and a shot strike the post. The visitors rode this period of pressure and managed to get a third with Richard Nummy finishing off a fine passing flowing move. Newry now have three games left in the league campaign with a tricky match away to Campbellians coming up on Saturday.

Campbellians 1's 1-3 Newry 1's
This has typically been a tough game for Newry over the past number of seasons and Saturdays fixture was no different. The league leaders started brightly and had Campbellians pinned back for the open exchanges but could not make their pressure pay. As the half wore on Newry seemed to take their foot of the gas and began to make silly mistakes letting the home side gain some confidence and create a few chances of their own. Richard Nummy eased the Newry nerves when he fired home a flick to give the visitors the lead which was short lived as Campbellians equalised through a short corner when the umpire and blown for a goal without the ball crossing the line. The second half was better from Newry as they piled on the pressure in search of another goal. The finishing let Newry down on a number of occasions before they finally found the break through when Kyle McCombe slotted home. Robert Irwin made it three soon after to give Newry a two goal lead with ten minutes remaining when Richard Nummy broke into the circle and laid the ball off to Irwin who slotted the ball low into the bottom left corner. Newry played the time out for the remainder of the game glad to have gotten out of jail with the three points after a lacklustre display. Newry's next game is against North Down in match that will go a long way to deciding where the league title will finish up at the end of the season.

Newry Ladies 1 Mossley 6
On Saturday, 1st February, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Mossley1st XI Ladies away at UUJ, Jordanstown at 4pm. Weather conditions had taken a turn for the worse but both teams nevertheless played on through the gales and rain. Mossley won the toss choosing pass back and were on the attack from the whistle but Newry battled back and were awarded a corner within the first five minutes. Despite the weather conditions both teams fought hard in the Mossley circle but nothing came of it. Mossley battled back but found themselves against a hard to penetrate Newry side. Mossley had a couple of chances with forwards keeping the pressure on the Newry defence but marking was tight. Eventually, Mossley went into the lead form a short corner but Newry equalised from a flick scored by Debbie Barry. Half time score one all.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out to face each other in terrible weather conditions with Newry running into the rain and wind. Mossley scored again from a short corner in the first fifteen minutes which seemed to have an adverse effect on Newry as they lost their positioning and were unable to make anything of their final few chances. Mossley dominated possession and were intent on breaking down the Newry play with constant pressure which led to a further four goals and one own goal.
Final score Newry Olympic 1 Mossley 6

Newry 1st 4-0 North Down 1sts
Newry hosted 2nd placed North Down in their penultimate game of the season. A win would see Newry win the league having remind unbeaten this season so far. Newry with a great home support dominated the early exchanges and really had North pinned back but could not find a way through. It only seemed a matter of time before the league leaders scored though which they duely did when John Taylor fired home a low drag flick into the bottom right corner. Newry continued to dominate and it was Robert Irwin who got their second before half time with a poachers tap in. It was 2-0 at the break but the game was along way from being over as in their previous game North had trailed Portadown by 2 goals at half time but came back to win 4-2.
Newry started the 2nd as they did the first with most of the possession and after a well worked short corner routine Colin McKight made it 3 and effectively crowned Newry as Senior 1 champions. There was still time for a forth when Robert Irwin forced and OG to make it 4 and the third time Newry had defeated North this season.
